Akron vs. Wake Forest Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Thursday, September 3

Akron and Wake Forest open the 2026 college football season Thursday night with the Demon Deacons looking to build on a nine-win debut under Jake Dickert. The Zips showed meaningful improvement late last season, but Wake enters as a substantial home favorite behind an experienced defense and new quarterback Gio Lopez. Check out this Akron vs. Wake Forest prediction and best bet for Thursday, September 3.

Akron vs. Wake Forest Prediction: Can Wake Start 2026 with a Bang at Home on Thursday Night?

Wake Forest begins its second season under Dickert by hosting Akron at Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium in Winston-Salem. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET on ACC Network, with the Demon Deacons favored by 24.5 points after the spread climbed throughout the offseason.

Wake Forest is coming off its first nine-win campaign since 2021 and returns much of the defense responsible for last year's turnaround. Akron also made progress in 2025, finishing with its highest win total since 2018, but now faces a major step up in competition on the road against an ACC opponent.

Akron vs. Wake Forest Recent Results

Wake Forest opens its season after finishing 9-4 overall and 4-4 in ACC play in Dickert's first year. The Demon Deacons ended the campaign with a 43-29 victory over Mississippi State in the Duke's Mayo Bowl, completing a season in which they averaged 28.1 points while allowing only 22.1 per game.

Akron went 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the MAC last season, its best overall record since 2017. The Zips found some momentum late by winning three of their final four games, including a 19-16 victory over Bowling Green to close the season. Akron averaged 22.2 points per game while allowing 27.4.

Akron vs. Wake Forest Head to Head

Thursday marks the first football meeting between Akron and Wake Forest, leaving no previous matchup to use as a direct comparison.

There is still familiarity between the coaching staffs. Dickert and Akron coach Joe Moorhead previously crossed paths in the Pac-12 when Dickert was at Washington State and Moorhead served as Oregon's offensive coordinator. Wake Forest has also had to prepare for additional uncertainty this week because Akron's quarterback situation remained unsettled deep into game preparation.

Akron vs. Wake Forest Line Movement and Betting Splits

Wake Forest opened around -22.5 before moving to -24.5, giving the Demon Deacons one of the more meaningful favorite-side moves on Thursday's slate. The total has moved in the opposite direction, dropping from around 49.5 to 48.5.

The betting action supports the move toward Wake Forest. The Demon Deacons have attracted 62% of spread bets and 63% of the money, compared with 38% of tickets and 37% of the handle on Akron. There is no major bets-to-money discrepancy suggesting a contrarian sharp side here, with both the public and overall money leaning toward Wake.

Akron vs. Wake Forest Prediction

Wake Forest's defense creates the clearest mismatch. The Demon Deacons allowed only 328.5 total yards per game last season, including 121.6 rushing yards, while holding opponents to 22.1 points per contest. Nine defensive starters return, giving Dickert an unusually experienced unit for an opening-week matchup against a MAC opponent.

That experience becomes particularly important because of Akron's uncertainty at quarterback. Reese Poffenbarger was expected to compete for the starting job after transferring from North Texas, but an eligibility question surrounding a potential sixth season remained unresolved leading into the opener. Brayden Roggow is another option after completing 11 of 17 passes for 91 yards in limited work last season.

Akron does have an established weapon in Jordan Gant. The senior became the program's first 1,000-yard rusher since 2008 by producing 1,032 yards last season, and wide receiver Marcel Williams returns after leading the Zips with 641 receiving yards. Wake cannot simply overwhelm Akron based on conference affiliation, especially against an offense returning nine starters.

The issue is sustaining that production against a defense significantly better than most of what Akron faced in MAC play. Wake allowed only 3.4 yards per rushing attempt last season, which could force the Zips away from Gant and place more responsibility on an uncertain quarterback situation. That is a difficult recipe for an underdog needing to score enough to stay within a four-touchdown spread.

Wake Forest is replacing more production offensively, but Lopez gives the Demon Deacons an experienced answer at quarterback. He started 11 games for North Carolina last season, completing 65.1% of his passes for 1,747 yards and 10 touchdowns, and previously played in the same offensive system under coordinator Rob Ezell at South Alabama. That familiarity should reduce some of the normal Week 1 adjustment period for a transfer quarterback.

The Demon Deacons can also lean on Ty Clark III and a deeper running back room while Lopez settles into the game. Clark produced 326 rushing yards and 209 receiving yards in a complementary role last season before delivering 164 yards from scrimmage in the bowl victory over Mississippi State. Wake does not need a high-volume passing performance to generate enough offense against an Akron defense that surrendered 384.4 yards per game in 2025.

The spread is massive, but Wake has the defensive profile needed to cover this type of number. Akron averaged only 22.2 points against the nation's weakest-rated schedule last season, while Wake went 9-4 despite an offense that was inconsistent for stretches. If the returning defense controls Gant and forces Akron into obvious passing situations, the Demon Deacons should have repeated opportunities to build separation.

Akron vs. Wake Forest Pick

The two-point move from Wake -22.5 to -24.5 makes the price less attractive than it was at the opener, but the matchup still favors the Demon Deacons. Wake brings back the core of a defense that allowed only 22.1 points per game, while Akron enters with uncertainty at quarterback and a significant jump in competition.

Akron's late-season improvement deserves respect, but covering this number likely requires the Zips to generate considerably more offense than they typically produced in 2025. Wake's defensive continuity, home-field advantage and more stable quarterback situation give the favorite a strong chance to turn a competitive opening quarter into a comfortable second-half margin.
