Minnesota begins its 143rd football season Thursday night against Eastern Illinois at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET on Peacock, with the Golden Gophers laying 42.5 points in P.J. Fleck's 10th season leading the program.
Unlike Minnesota, Eastern Illinois has already played a meaningful game. The Panthers defeated Murray State 28-14 last Thursday behind a dominant rushing performance and now have to make an enormous jump in competition against a Big Ten team returning several of its most important players.

Minnesota is playing its season opener after finishing 8-5 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten play last year. The Golden Gophers ended the year with consecutive victories, beating Wisconsin 17-7 in the regular-season finale before defeating New Mexico 20-17 in the Rate Bowl. Minnesota went a perfect 7-0 at Huntington Bank Stadium but averaged only 23.0 points per game across the season.
Eastern Illinois enters at 1-0 after beating Murray State 28-14 on the road. Eastern Illinois vs. Minnesota Line Movement and Betting Splits
Minnesota opened around -43.5 before moving slightly toward Eastern Illinois at -42.5, while the total has remained around 51.5. There has not been enough spread movement to suggest a major market position in either direction.
Eastern Illinois has drawn 65% of spread bets but only 52% of the money, while Minnesota has 35% of tickets and 48% of the handle. The more notable split comes on the total, where the Over has 61% of bets but only 43% of the money. The Under has attracted just 39% of tickets but 57% of the handle, indicating that the larger average wagers have favored a lower-scoring game.

Eastern Illinois showed exactly how it wants to play in its opener. The Panthers ran the ball 47 times compared with only 18 passes, held possession for more than 33 minutes and leaned heavily on Kellom. That formula is useful when trying to shorten a game against a massive favorite, even if replicating the actual rushing production against Minnesota will be extremely difficult.
Minnesota allowed only 121.1 rushing yards per game and 3.7 yards per carry last season. Anthony Smith is back after recording 17.5 tackles for loss and a Big Ten-leading 12.5 sacks, giving the Gophers a disruptive front capable of forcing Eastern Illinois away from its preferred offensive approach.
That becomes a major issue for Cole LaCrue. The Eastern Illinois quarterback completed 11 of 18 passes for only 101 yards against Murray State and was sacked five times. He did not need to create much through the air because the Panthers rushed for 267 yards, but Minnesota is far less likely to allow Kellom and Jacarre Fleming-Page to consistently reach the second level.
Minnesota should control the other side of the ball, although that does not automatically mean 50-plus points. Drake Lindsey returns after throwing for 2,382 yards with 18 touchdowns and only six interceptions as a freshman, and he enters the opener on a streak of 153 pass attempts without an interception. Darius Taylor also returns after producing 915 yards from scrimmage despite playing only 10 games.
The Gophers should be able to run efficiently and give Lindsey favorable passing situations, especially against an Eastern Illinois defense that surrendered 257 passing yards to Murray State. Still, Minnesota averaged only 23.0 points last season and does not need to maintain an aggressive approach for four quarters if it creates a comfortable early lead.
Minnesota's 66-0 win over Northwestern State last season shows the ceiling against an overmatched FCS opponent, but the Gophers scored 23 points or fewer in seven of their 13 games. With Mississippi State coming to Minneapolis next week, there is little incentive to expose starters or empty the playbook once this matchup is under control.
The Under can also survive a decisive Minnesota victory. A 42-7 or 38-7 type of game remains below 51.5, and Eastern Illinois' best offensive weapon is a running back who naturally keeps the clock moving. Minnesota should dominate the matchup physically without necessarily creating the pace needed for the two teams to combine for more than seven touchdowns.

The matchup strongly favors a Minnesota defense that should limit Eastern Illinois' ability to contribute much to the total. The Panthers built their opening victory around 47 rushing attempts and a possession-oriented approach, but Kellom now faces a defense that allowed only 3.7 yards per carry last season.
Minnesota is capable of scoring enough to threaten the number by itself, but that requires the Gophers to remain aggressive deep into a game they are favored to win by more than 40 points. With only 39% of bets but 57% of the money already landing on the Under, the combination of game script, Minnesota's defense and Eastern Illinois' preferred tempo makes Under 51.5 the strongest play.
