Idaho vs. Utah Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Thursday, September 3

Idaho faces a major step up in competition Thursday night when the Vandals travel to Salt Lake City to face No. 21 Utah. The Utes return the core of an offense that ranked among the most productive in the country last season, while Idaho is trying to bounce back from a 38-point defensive showing in its opener. Check out this Idaho vs. Utah prediction and best bet for Thursday, September 3.

Idaho vs. Utah Prediction: Can Devon Dampier, Utah Navigate New Head Coach in Season Opener?

No. 21 Utah opens its 2026 season Thursday night against Idaho at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:00 PM ET on ESPNU as Morgan Scalley makes his regular-season debut as Utah's full-time head coach after leading the Utes to a bowl victory in his interim debut last December.

Idaho already has one game behind it, losing a 38-34 shootout at Cal Poly last Friday. The Vandals showed significant offensive potential in the loss, but now encounter a Utah team coming off an 11-win season and carrying much more continuity than the typical program undergoing a head-coaching transition.

Idaho vs. Utah Recent Results

Idaho enters at 0-1 overall and 0-1 in Big Sky play after falling 38-34 at Cal Poly. The Vandals generated 482 yards and averaged 8.2 yards per play, with quarterback Joshua Wood throwing for 363 yards and two touchdowns and Tony Harste catching nine passes for 180 yards and two scores. The concern was a defense that surrendered 516 yards and allowed Cal Poly to drive 65 yards for the winning touchdown in the final 1:03. Idaho finished 4-8 overall and 2-6 in Big Sky play last season.

Utah is playing its first game after finishing 11-2 overall and 7-2 in the Big 12 last season. The Utes closed the year on a six-game winning streak and beat Nebraska 44-22 in the Las Vegas Bowl, scoring 31 or more points in every game during that streak and averaging 46.5 points across the six victories. Utah finished the season ranked No. 14 nationally and now begins 2026 at No. 21.

Idaho vs. Utah Head to Head

Utah holds a narrow 14-12-2 advantage in a series that dates all the way back to 1908. The programs have not played since 1993, when Idaho went into Salt Lake City and defeated the Utes 28-17.

The five most recent meetings:

  • October 2, 1993: Idaho 28, Utah 17
  • October 3, 1964: Utah 22, Idaho 0
  • September 28, 1963: Idaho 10, Utah 7
  • October 27, 1962: Utah 25, Idaho 21
  • November 7, 1959: Utah 47, Idaho 13

The rivalry has effectively been dormant for more than three decades, and the programs return to it from very different places. Idaho is now one of the more ambitious FCS programs and has recorded FBS road wins over Nevada and Wyoming since 2023, while Utah has developed into a consistent Power Four contender.

Idaho vs. Utah Line Movement and Betting Splits

Utah opened around a 32.5-point favorite before climbing to -35.5, a meaningful three-point move toward the Utes. The total has also increased from roughly 56.5 to 57.5, showing growing expectations for Utah to produce a significant portion of the scoring.

Utah has attracted 69% of spread bets and 67% of the money, compared with 31% of tickets and 33% of the handle on Idaho. The favorite is drawing the majority of both categories without a meaningful bets-to-money discrepancy. On the total, the Under has only 48% of tickets but 54% of the money, creating a slight larger-wager lean toward a lower-scoring game.

Idaho's opener did little to slow the movement toward Utah. The Vandals allowed 516 yards and 38 points to Cal Poly, while Utah enters with most of the major pieces back from an offense that scored 41.3 points per game last season.

Idaho vs. Utah Prediction

Idaho's offense deserves considerably more respect than a typical FCS unit walking into a Power Four stadium. Wood completed 18 of 25 passes for 363 yards against Cal Poly and finished with 405 total yards, while Harste consistently created explosive plays downfield. Utah cannot simply assume its talent advantage will eliminate Idaho's ability to move the football.

The problem for the Vandals is what happened on the other side. Cal Poly accumulated 516 total yards, including 319 through the air and 197 on the ground, while converting nine of 16 third downs. Idaho allowed 29 first downs and could not protect a three-point lead with just over a minute remaining.

That is a dangerous defensive profile against one of the country's most productive returning quarterbacks. Devon Dampier threw for 2,490 yards and 24 touchdowns last season while adding 835 rushing yards and 10 scores. His dual-threat ability helped Utah average 41.3 points and 482.9 yards per game, including 266.3 rushing yards per contest.

Wayshawn Parker gives the Utes another established rushing weapon after producing 981 yards on only 149 carries last season. Utah does not need Dampier to throw the ball all over the field to create a huge margin here. The combination of Dampier and Parker should consistently put Idaho's front in conflict and create explosive opportunities once the Vandals begin committing additional defenders to the run.

Utah also has far more continuity than the coaching change might initially suggest. Scalley has spent his entire coaching career with the program and served as defensive coordinator for a decade before replacing Kyle Whittingham. He already coached the Utes to their 44-22 bowl win over Nebraska, making this far different from a completely new staff installing unfamiliar systems in Week 1.

The Utah defense should also create a much different environment for Wood than Cal Poly did. The Utes allowed only 18.9 points per game last season, while opponents completed just 49.4% of their passes. Linebacker Johnathan Hall returns after leading Utah with 67 tackles, and safety Jackson Bennee is back after recording 64 tackles.

There is always risk laying more than five touchdowns against an FCS team capable of generating explosive offense, especially once Utah begins rotating backups. But the Utes beat Cal Poly 63-9 in their FCS matchup last season and have won 17 consecutive home openers. Idaho's defensive performance in Week 0 makes it difficult to trust the Vandals to slow this offense enough for the huge number to matter.

Idaho vs. Utah Pick

The spread has already climbed three points, but Idaho's opener showed why the market has moved toward Utah. Allowing 516 yards to Cal Poly is a major warning before facing Dampier, Parker and an offense that averaged more than 41 points per game last season.

Idaho should create a few opportunities with Wood and Harste, but Utah has overwhelming advantages on the line of scrimmage and enough returning offensive firepower to build separation quickly. The Utes closed 2025 averaging 46.5 points over their final six games, and another high-40s or 50-point performance gives Utah a strong path to clearing the 35.5-point spread.
