Illinois opens its 2026 season Thursday night against UAB at Gies Memorial Stadium in Champaign. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:00 PM ET on Big Ten Network, with Bret Bielema's Illini favored by 27.5 points after winning 19 games over the last two seasons.
There are still plenty of new variables despite the massive spread. Illinois replaces longtime starting quarterback Luke Altmyer with East Carolina transfer Katin Houser, while UAB enters its first full season under Mortensen with one of the most heavily reconstructed rosters in the country.
UAB vs. Illinois Recent Results
UAB opens the season after finishing 4-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play last year. The Blazers ended the campaign positively with a 31-24 road win over Tulsa, but defensive problems defined much of the season. UAB allowed 38.3 points and 424.2 yards per game, including 191.6 rushing yards per contest.
Illinois went 9-4 overall and 5-4 in Big Ten play in 2025, giving the program nine or more wins in consecutive seasons for the first time in its history. The Illini finished with back-to-back victories, beating Northwestern 20-13 before defeating Tennessee 30-28 in the Music City Bowl on a field goal as time expired.
UAB vs. Illinois Head to Head
Thursday will be the first football meeting between UAB and Illinois. It will also be UAB's first game played in the state of Illinois and its first season opener against a Power Four opponent since facing Florida in 2011.
The matchup also represents a major early test for Mortensen's rebuild. UAB added dozens of newcomers during the offseason, including 27 defensive additions, while Illinois enters with considerably more program stability under Bielema.

UAB vs. Illinois Line Movement and Betting Splits
Illinois opened around -27.5 and remains at that number, but the more interesting movement has come on the total. The number opened around 56.5 before dropping two full points to 54.5.
That move is especially notable because 62% of total bets and 69% of the money are backing the Over. The total falling despite the majority of both tickets and money expecting points creates a strong market signal toward the Under. Illinois is also attracting 58% of spread bets and 70% of the money as a 27.5-point favorite.
UAB vs. Illinois Prediction
Illinois enters with a new quarterback, and that creates an immediate reason to question whether the offense operates at full efficiency from the opening drive. Houser brings plenty of experience after throwing for roughly 3,300 yards and 19 touchdowns at East Carolina last season, but this is still his first game directing a new offense with different personnel around him.
The Illini averaged 29.4 points and 373.8 yards per game last season, respectable numbers without being an overwhelming offensive machine. Their best path against an overmatched UAB roster should involve establishing the run, controlling possession and avoiding unnecessary risks rather than asking Houser to throw aggressively for four quarters.
UAB's defense was one of the country's biggest problems last season, but it will barely resemble that unit Thursday. New coordinator Todd Grantham arrives with 27 defensive additions, and the Blazers spent the offseason adding size and Power Four experience throughout the front seven. There may be growing pains, but the sheer volume of turnover creates a reasonable chance for improvement from a defense that allowed 38.3 points per game.
The stronger Under argument comes from the other matchup. Ryder Burton enters the season as UAB's starting quarterback after throwing for 708 yards and seven touchdowns in nine appearances last year. His best performance came in the upset of No. 22 Memphis, when he threw for 251 yards and three touchdowns, but this is his first season carrying the offense on a full-time basis.
Illinois should be able to make that transition difficult. The Illini allowed 23.6 points and 345.1 yards per game last season, and their secondary gets a major boost from the return of Xavier Scott after he missed the final 10 games of 2025 following surgery. Two-time All-Big Ten safety Matthew Bailey also returns after leading Illinois in tackles in each of the last two seasons.
UAB is also working with a rebuilt supporting cast. Mortensen has listed Rod Robinson II, Bam McReynolds and Ja'Vin Simpkins together atop the running back depth chart rather than committing to one featured back. That depth could eventually benefit the offense, but a road opener against an experienced Big Ten defense is a difficult environment for so many new pieces to immediately mesh.
Illinois should control this game, but a comfortable win does not necessarily require the matchup to reach the mid-50s. Once the Illini build separation, Bielema has every reason to lean on the running game, shorten the second half and protect Houser before a much more significant Week 2 matchup against Duke. UAB may need to contribute multiple touchdowns for the Over to become comfortable, and that is far from guaranteed.

The move from 56.5 to 54.5 despite 62% of bets and 69% of the money landing on the Over is the strongest market signal in this matchup. Illinois is breaking in a new quarterback and should be able to play conservatively once ahead, while UAB faces a difficult assignment trying to generate points with a new-look offense against an experienced Illini defense.
The full-game Under also avoids needing UAB's reconstructed defense to completely stop Illinois. A comfortable result in the neighborhood of 38-10 or 35-13 is enough to cash, and the expected game script gives Illinois little incentive to keep pushing the pace deep into the fourth quarter.
