Rutgers hosts UMass on Thursday night at SHI Stadium in Piscataway, with kickoff scheduled for 6:00 PM ET on the Big Ten Network. The Scarlet Knights enter as 29.5-point favorites and are seeking their seventh consecutive season-opening victory under Greg Schiano.
Both programs are introducing transfer quarterbacks, but the supporting situations are dramatically different. Rutgers surrounds Boston College transfer Dylan Lonergan with proven running back Antwan Raymond, wide receiver KJ Duff and an experienced offensive line, while former Rutgers defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak is trying to stabilize a UMass team that did not win a game in his first season.
UMass vs. Rutgers Recent Results
Rutgers opens its season after finishing 5-7 overall and 2-7 in Big Ten play last year. The Scarlet Knights missed a bowl game after losing 40-36 to Penn State in the regular-season finale, despite producing 533 total yards and leading midway through the fourth quarter. Rutgers averaged 28.7 points and 407.1 yards per game, but a defense that surrendered 31.8 points per contest prevented the team from turning its offensive improvement into a winning season.
UMass begins its second season under Harasymiak after going 0-12 overall and 0-8 in the MAC. The Minutemen completed the winless campaign with a 45-14 loss to Bowling Green and finished last nationally in both scoring offense and scoring defense, averaging 11.1 points while allowing 38.6 per game. UMass was outscored 463-133 across the season and now enters 2026 with 30 transfers and 26 freshmen among its 56 newcomers.

UMass scored three touchdowns in the opening quarter of the 2019 meeting and built a 21-7 lead before Rutgers responded with 41 unanswered points. Isiah Pacheco rushed for 156 yards and tied a Rutgers single-game record with four rushing touchdowns, while the Scarlet Knights scored 31 points in the second quarter alone.
The coaching connection adds another layer to the rematch. Harasymiak spent three seasons as Rutgers’ defensive coordinator from 2022 through 2024 before taking over at UMass, giving the Minutemen’s staff familiarity with Schiano’s program even though much of the UMass roster has since turned over.

UMass vs. Rutgers Line Movement and Betting Splits
Rutgers opened as a 30.5-point favorite before the spread moved through the key 30-point mark to -29.5. The total has experienced a larger adjustment, falling from an opener of 55.5 to the current 52.5.
Rutgers has attracted 61% of spread bets and 66% of the money, making the Scarlet Knights the more popular side without creating an overwhelming public imbalance. The Over has drawn 59% of tickets and 83% of the total handle, but the three-point drop indicates that the market was willing to support the Under at the higher opening number.
UMass vs. Rutgers Prediction
Rutgers should be able to control this matchup through its offensive line and running game. UMass allowed 221.3 rushing yards per game, 30 rushing touchdowns and 433.8 total yards per contest last season. That is a severe matchup problem against Raymond, who rushed for 1,241 yards and 13 touchdowns while adding another 225 yards and two scores as a receiver.
Raymond is the Big Ten’s leading returning rusher, and Rutgers can feature him early without placing unnecessary pressure on Lonergan. The Scarlet Knights have produced a 1,200-yard rusher in three consecutive seasons, and preseason All-America guard Kwabena Asamoah anchors an offensive line capable of consistently moving an undersized and rebuilt UMass front.
Lonergan also has a favorable opportunity to settle into his new offense. He completed 66.9% of his passes for 2,025 yards and 12 touchdowns at Boston College last season, giving Rutgers considerably more Power Four experience at quarterback than the typical team breaking in a transfer starter. UMass allowed opposing quarterbacks to complete 67.3% of their passes and surrendered an FBS-high 29 passing touchdowns in 2025.
KJ Duff gives Lonergan an elite target when Rutgers chooses to attack vertically. Duff recorded 60 receptions for 1,084 yards and seven touchdowns last year, ranked seventh nationally with 90.3 receiving yards per game and led the country with 22 contested catches. At 6-foot-6, he presents a major problem for a UMass secondary replacing several contributors and integrating more transfer pieces.
Rutgers’ defense is the primary concern when laying nearly 30 points. The Scarlet Knights allowed 31.8 points and 209.9 rushing yards per game last season, leading Schiano to hire Travis Johansen as the new defensive coordinator. UMass offers an ideal opening assignment for that group after converting only 30.7% of its third downs and scoring 14 points or fewer in 10 of its 12 games last year.
Virginia Tech transfer William “Pop” Watson III gives the Minutemen a more mobile option at quarterback, but he enters with limited experience after throwing for 558 yards and one touchdown across 11 appearances with the Hokies. UMass also lacks a proven returning rushing attack, with Elijah Faulkner producing 114 yards on 40 carries as a freshman. That makes it difficult to envision the Minutemen sustaining enough drives to shorten the game or threaten Rutgers’ margin.
Large opening-week spreads always create some late-game risk once the favorite begins rotating its depth chart. Rutgers, however, has enough ways to build the necessary margin before that becomes a factor. The Scarlet Knights can score through Raymond and Duff, create short fields against an inexperienced quarterback and lean on a special-teams unit that produced three blocked punts returned for touchdowns last season.

The move below 30 points creates a more attractive entry point on a Rutgers team with overwhelming advantages at running back, wide receiver and along the offensive line. UMass was outscored by an average of 27.5 points per game last season despite playing a weaker schedule, and its 56-player influx is unlikely to immediately correct deficiencies on both sides of the ball. Rutgers should establish control early and produce enough offense to cover even if its starters spend much of the fourth quarter on the sideline.
