Fresno State vs. USC Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Friday, September 4th

Fresno State opens its 2026 season with a major test against No. 14 USC under the Friday night lights at the Coliseum. The Trojans already have one dominant performance behind them, but Fresno State returns the core of an excellent defense and brings a physical style capable of making this matchup more competitive than the spread suggests. Check out this Fresno State vs. USC prediction and best bet for Friday, September 4.

Fresno State vs. USC Prediction: Do Bulldogs Stand a Chance on Road Against Trojans on Friday Night?

Fresno State begins its first season in the new Pac-12 by traveling to Los Angeles to face No. 14 USC at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Kickoff is scheduled for 9:00 PM ET on FOX, with the Trojans favored by more than three touchdowns after beating San Jose State 42-26 in Week 0.

USC has the obvious offensive talent advantage, but Fresno State enters Year 2 under Matt Entz after winning nine games in his debut season. Entz also knows this opponent particularly well after serving as USC's assistant head coach for defense and linebackers on Lincoln Riley's staff in 2024.

Fresno State vs. USC Recent Results

Fresno State is playing its season opener after finishing 9-4 overall and 5-3 in Mountain West play last season. The Bulldogs closed the year with consecutive victories, beating San Jose State 41-14 before holding Miami (Ohio) to three points in an 18-3 Arizona Bowl victory. Fresno State allowed only 18.8 points per game and 285.7 total yards per contest across the season.

USC enters 1-0 after defeating San Jose State 42-26 last Saturday. The Trojans piled up 505 yards and led 35-3 entering the fourth quarter, but the Spartans scored 23 points in the final period to make the final margin considerably tighter. USC went 9-4 overall and 7-2 in Big Ten play last season before losing 30-27 to TCU in the Alamo Bowl.

Fresno State vs. USC Head to Head

USC officially leads the series 4-1, excluding a 2005 Trojans victory that was later vacated. Fresno State's only win came in the 1992 Freedom Bowl, while USC has controlled the more recent meetings.

  • September 17, 2022: USC 45, Fresno State 17
  • August 31, 2019: USC 31, Fresno State 23
  • August 30, 2014: USC 51, Fresno State 13
  • December 21, 2013: USC 45, Fresno State 20
  • November 19, 2005: USC 50, Fresno State 42 (vacated)
  • December 29, 1992: Fresno State 24, USC 7

The 2019 meeting provides a reminder that Fresno State has been capable of making USC uncomfortable at the Coliseum. The Bulldogs were within one possession in a 31-23 loss, and Entz now brings a defensive identity that should give Fresno State a better chance of slowing Riley's passing game than many teams catching more than 20 points.

Fresno State vs. USC Line Movement and Betting Splits

USC opened around -23.5 before the spread moved toward Fresno State to the current -22.5. That move is notable because USC remains the more popular side, drawing 69% of spread bets and 57% of the money.

Fresno State has only 31% of tickets but 43% of the handle, indicating a considerably larger average wager on the Bulldogs. The one-point move toward Fresno despite the majority of bets landing on USC gives the underdog a somewhat sharper-looking market profile without making it an overwhelming signal.

Fresno State vs. USC Prediction

USC's offense looked every bit as dangerous as expected in its opener. Jayden Maiava completed 25 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns without an interception, while the Trojans generated 505 total yards and 29 first downs. Trent Mosley immediately emerged as another weapon with seven receptions for 118 yards and a touchdown.

Fresno State, however, is much better equipped defensively than the typical three-touchdown underdog. The Bulldogs allowed only 153.8 passing yards per game last season, held opposing quarterbacks to a 53.8% completion rate and intercepted 20 passes. Nickel back Simeon Harris returns after recording five interceptions, giving Fresno State legitimate experience in the secondary against USC's explosive passing attack.

Entz's familiarity with Riley also matters. He spent the 2024 season inside USC's program and understands the structure, tendencies and personnel requirements of Riley's offense. That does not eliminate USC's talent advantage, but it should help Fresno State arrive with a more informed defensive plan than most nonconference opponents visiting the Coliseum.

The Bulldogs also have a clear offensive formula for shortening the game. Rayshon Luke rushed for 702 yards at 6.3 yards per carry last season, while Bryson Donelson added 600 yards and five touchdowns. Fresno State averaged 170.5 rushing yards per game and can lean on both backs to create longer possessions and keep Maiava on the sideline.

Quarterback is the biggest concern. Junior Jayden Mandal takes over after missing all of last season with an injury and has only nine collegiate pass attempts. That makes it unlikely Fresno State wants a high-possession shootout, but the Bulldogs can protect him with their running game and returning receiver Josiah Freeman, who produced 642 yards and six touchdowns in 2025.

USC also showed last week how a huge lead can become vulnerable against a large spread. The Trojans led San Jose State 35-3 entering the fourth quarter before allowing 23 points in the final period. Some of that came after the game was essentially decided, but that is exactly the type of late-game script that matters when laying more than three touchdowns.

Fresno State does not need to threaten an outright upset. The Bulldogs need to run the ball effectively enough to shorten the game, prevent USC from repeatedly producing explosive passes and take advantage if Riley begins rotating younger players with a comfortable lead. After allowing fewer than 19 points per game last season, Fresno State has enough defensive credibility to make 22.5 points feel inflated.

Fresno State vs. USC Best Bet

USC should win, but Fresno State has the defensive personnel and game plan to keep the margin below four possessions. The Bulldogs were one of the country's better defensive teams last season, return an experienced secondary and can lean on Luke and Donelson to keep the clock moving while easing Mandal into his first start.

The market has also moved from Fresno State +23.5 to +22.5 despite USC attracting 69% of spread bets. With Fresno accounting for 43% of the money on only 31% of the tickets, the larger average wagers are showing more interest in the Bulldogs. USC can control Friday night's matchup without producing the type of wire-to-wire blowout required to cover this number.
