Kansas opens its 135th football season Friday night against LIU at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET on ESPNU, with the Jayhawks favored by more than six touchdowns as Lance Leipold begins his sixth season in Lawrence.
The talent gap is enormous, but Kansas enters with considerably more turnover than the spread might suggest. The Jayhawks graduated 37 seniors and added 32 transfers, while LIU already has a game behind it after facing North Dakota in Week 0.
LIU vs. Kansas Recent Results
LIU enters at 0-1 after losing 42-21 at North Dakota last Thursday. The Sharks were overwhelmed early and trailed 42-0 at halftime before scoring 21 unanswered points after the break. LIU finished 6-6 overall and 4-3 in NEC play last season, closing the year on a three-game winning streak with a 24-17 victory over Wagner.
Kansas is playing its first game after finishing 5-7 overall and 3-6 in Big 12 play last season. The Jayhawks lost their final three games and closed with a 31-21 home defeat against No. 14 Utah despite producing 477 total yards. Kansas averaged 28.1 points per game but missed a bowl for the second consecutive season.

Friday will be the first football meeting between LIU and Kansas.
LIU has already shown it is willing to challenge FBS opponents. The Sharks earned their first FBS victory by beating Eastern Michigan 28-23 last season, although they were also shut out 55-0 at Florida. Kansas handled its FCS matchup last season comfortably, beating Wagner 46-7 while piling up 631 yards.

LIU vs. Kansas Line Movement and Betting Splits
Kansas opened around a 38.5-point favorite before heavy support pushed the number through 40 and into the low 40s, with this market now showing -43.5. The total has also climbed from an opener around 53.5 into the mid-50s.
The betting splits favor Kansas, with the Jayhawks attracting 61% of spread bets and 72% of the money. LIU has 39% of tickets but only 28% of the handle, so both the public and the larger overall share of money have sided with the favorite. The significant move toward Kansas reflects that support, although the adjustment also makes laying more than six touchdowns increasingly expensive.
LIU vs. Kansas Prediction
Kansas should dominate defensively. LIU averaged only 16.4 points and 294.3 total yards per game last season, and the Sharks' first half against North Dakota produced just 21 total yards and zero points. Kansas returns leading tackler Trey Lathan, who recorded 86 tackles last season, along with five defensive starters and several Power Four transfers.
The Jayhawks should be able to create a comfortable lead, but their offense carries more uncertainty. Jalon Daniels is gone after several years as the face of the program, and Isaiah Marshall won the starting quarterback job despite attempting only three passes last season. Marshall is a dangerous athlete who rushed for 160 yards on just 15 attempts, but this remains his first game running the offense.
Nearly the entire supporting cast has also changed. Kansas lost Daniel Hishaw Jr. and Leshon Williams from the backfield and Emmanuel Henderson Jr. from the receiving corps while replacing three starters along the offensive line. Dylan Edwards, Yasin Willis, Jalen Dupree and Buffalo transfer Nik McMillan provide plenty of talent, but this is the first live game for many of those combinations.
That turnover is particularly relevant when evaluating a total of 56.5 rather than whether Kansas wins comfortably. The Jayhawks do not need to unveil an aggressive offensive game plan against an FCS opponent with rival Missouri coming to Lawrence next Friday. Establishing Marshall, evaluating the new backfield and building offensive-line chemistry should matter more than trying to score 60.
LIU's Week 0 performance creates a similar dynamic. North Dakota reached 42 points by halftime but did not score after the break, while the Sharks finally settled down and scored three touchdowns of their own. The game was already decided, and the second half became dramatically slower once North Dakota began managing the margin.
Kansas should find itself in the same position if it plays to expectation. Marshall and the starters could create a 28-0 or 35-0 advantage before younger players and transfers begin receiving extended work. At that point, longer rushing possessions and a running clock become much more likely than four quarters of maximum offensive aggression.
The Under also provides plenty of room for a dominant Kansas result. Scores such as 42-7, 45-7, 42-10 or even 49-7 all stay below 56.5. LIU may struggle to contribute more than one touchdown against the Kansas starters, while the Jayhawks' extensive offensive turnover and likely second-half substitutions make asking Kansas to do almost all of the work toward 57 points an aggressive expectation.

Kansas should control the game without needing to turn it into a track meet. The Jayhawks are introducing a new starting quarterback, replacing most of their leading offensive production and integrating 32 transfers, which gives Leipold little reason to keep pushing once the margin becomes comfortable.
LIU's inability to generate anything offensively during the first half against North Dakota makes the Sharks unlikely to contribute heavily to the total, while their 21-point second half showed how quickly a blowout can slow once the favorite empties the bench. Kansas can win by five or six touchdowns and still keep this game Under 56.5, making the total more attractive than laying an inflated -43.5.
