San Jose State travels to Ypsilanti on Friday night to face Eastern Michigan at Rynearson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 PM ET on ESPN+, with the Eagles favored by a field goal after opening the season with a victory over Sacramento State.
The Spartans are 0-1 after losing 42-26 at USC, but the final stages of that game were much more encouraging than the first half. Weaver and the San Jose State offense finally found a rhythm against a talented Trojans defense, creating some optimism entering a much more manageable matchup in Week 1.
San Jose State vs. Eastern Michigan Recent Results
San Jose State fell 42-26 at No. 14 USC in its opener after finishing 3-9 overall and 2-6 in Mountain West play last season. The Spartans trailed 28-0 at halftime and 35-3 entering the fourth quarter before exploding for 23 points in the final period. Weaver completed 21 of 32 passes for 234 yards and two touchdowns without an interception while also leading the team with 42 rushing yards and another score. San Jose State finished 2025 with four consecutive losses, including a 41-14 defeat against Fresno State.
Eastern Michigan is 1-0 overall and 1-0 in MAC play after beating new conference member Sacramento State 28-17 last Saturday. Noah Kim completed 27 of 38 passes for 279 yards and two touchdowns while adding a rushing score, and the Eagles held Sacramento State to 271 total yards. Eastern Michigan went 4-8 overall and 3-5 in the MAC last season, closing the year with a 31-21 loss to Western Michigan.

San Jose State vs. Eastern Michigan Line Movement and Betting Splits
Eastern Michigan opened around -3.5 before the spread moved toward San Jose State to -3. The total has moved considerably more, climbing from an opener around 53.5 to 56.5 after both quarterbacks showed encouraging signs in their first games.
San Jose State has attracted 56% of spread bets but 67% of the money, while Eastern Michigan has 44% of tickets and just 33% of the handle. The moneyline shows an even stronger discrepancy, with San Jose State receiving 48% of bets but 62% of the money. That combination, along with the move from +3.5 toward +3, gives the Spartans the sharper-looking betting profile entering Friday.

San Jose State's first half at USC was ugly, but there was much more to like once Weaver settled into the game. The Spartans produced 221 yards after halftime and scored on each of their final four possessions, including three consecutive touchdown drives to close the game. They outscored USC 23-7 in the fourth quarter after entering the period down 35-3.
Weaver was the biggest reason for that turnaround. He completed 65.6% of his passes, averaged 7.3 yards per attempt and did not turn the ball over against a ranked Big Ten opponent. He also showed enough mobility to create outside structure, rushing eight times for 42 yards and a touchdown. His 276 total yards accounted for more than 82% of San Jose State's 336 yards of offense.
The supporting cast also began to emerge as the game progressed. True freshman Carson Clark caught six passes for 74 yards in his collegiate debut, while Jerry McClure added six catches for 68 yards and a touchdown. San Jose State did not turn the ball over and allowed only one sack against USC, two encouraging indicators for an offense breaking in a new starting quarterback.
Eastern Michigan deserves respect after its opener. Kim looked comfortable against Sacramento State, throwing for 279 yards and accounting for three touchdowns, while the Eagles defense allowed only 34 yards in the first half and 271 for the game. Eastern has also been consistently competitive under Chris Creighton and is attempting to start 2-0 for the first time since 2018.
The difference is the jump in San Jose State's competition from Week 0 to this matchup. The Spartans just faced USC's size, speed and depth for four quarters and still found a way to move the ball late. Eastern Michigan opened against Sacramento State, a first-year FBS program, and now has to defend a quarterback who showed he could remain composed after getting buried early in the Coliseum.
San Jose State's rushing attack still needs improvement after its running backs struggled to create much against USC, but Weaver's mobility changes the numbers in the box. If the Spartans can generate even moderate early-down success, Weaver should have opportunities against an Eastern Michigan defense that is unlikely to create the same pressure or coverage problems USC did.
This also profiles as a game where taking the points and playing the moneyline together makes sense. Eastern Michigan has home-field advantage and a more experienced quarterback in Kim, but there is not much separating these teams on paper. San Jose State's second-half performance in Los Angeles showed a ceiling that makes an outright road win very realistic.

San Jose State's 42-26 loss looks much different when isolating how the Spartans finished it. Weaver led four consecutive scoring drives, San Jose State outscored USC 23-7 in the fourth quarter and the offense finally looked comfortable after facing one of the most talented defenses on its schedule.
The market is also showing meaningful support for the road team, with San Jose State drawing a larger share of the money than the tickets on both the spread and moneyline. Taking +3 provides protection in what should be a one-score game, while +125 is worth attacking separately with Weaver giving the Spartans a legitimate path to their first outright win of the season.
