No. 10 Oklahoma begins its fifth season under Brent Venables on Friday night against UTEP at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET on SEC Network+, with the Sooners favored by more than 40 points in their 2026 opener.
Oklahoma enters with legitimate College Football Playoff expectations after winning 10 games last season, while UTEP is coming off a two-win campaign and begins its first year as a member of the Mountain West. The Miners have upgraded at quarterback, but their first test comes against the strength of Oklahoma's roster.
UTEP vs. Oklahoma Recent Results
UTEP is playing its season opener after finishing 2-10 overall and 1-7 in Conference USA last season. The Miners lost their final five games, including a 61-31 defeat at Delaware in the finale, and averaged 23.3 points while producing only 331.8 yards per game. Oklahoma opens the year after going 10-3 overall and 6-2 in SEC play in 2025. UTEP vs. Oklahoma Line Movement and Betting Splits
Oklahoma opened around -40.5 and has bounced between -40.5 and -41.5 before returning to the current number. The total has moved slightly upward, opening around 50.5 before reaching 51.5.
The spread action is overwhelmingly behind Oklahoma, with the Sooners attracting 76% of both bets and the handle compared with 24% on UTEP. There is no meaningful bets-to-money discrepancy pointing toward a sharper side, with the public and overall money simply loading up on the massive home favorite.
UTEP vs. Oklahoma Prediction
UTEP's biggest problem is figuring out how to contribute enough points to push this game Over the total. Oklahoma was elite in nearly every meaningful defensive category last season, ranking first nationally in sacks at 3.5 per game and tackles for loss at 9.4 per game, third against the run at only 77.3 yards allowed per game and sixth in total defense.
The Sooners were equally difficult to sustain drives against, holding opponents to a 28.2% third-down conversion rate while allowing just 15.5 points per game. Six defenders who started at least six games are back, giving Venables significantly more continuity than most defenses possess in a season opener.
The front should be particularly difficult for UTEP. Taylor Wein returns after recording 15 tackles for loss and seven sacks, David Stone is back after contributing eight tackles for loss, and Oklahoma has experienced linebackers Kip Lewis and Owen Heinecke behind them. Peyton Bowen also returns at safety after earning All-SEC honors last season.
UTEP will try to counter that talent with new quarterback EJ Colson Jr., who transferred from Incarnate Word after completing more than 70% of his passes with 16 touchdowns against four interceptions last season. His mobility gives the Miners another dimension after he also rushed for 287 yards and three scores, but transitioning from FCS competition to this Oklahoma defense is about as difficult as a first start can get.
UTEP struggled to establish the run even against much weaker competition last season, averaging only 115.6 rushing yards and 3.7 yards per carry. Oklahoma surrendered just 2.4 yards per rushing attempt. If the Miners are consistently facing second-and-long and third-and-long, Venables can unleash a pass rush that should create sacks, stalled drives and plenty of punts.
Oklahoma can certainly threaten the total on its own, but that is where the game script becomes important. John Mateer returns after accounting for 3,316 total yards and 22 touchdowns in 12 games last season, and Isaiah Sategna gives him an established No. 1 target after catching 68 passes for 965 yards and eight touchdowns.
There is little reason, however, for Oklahoma to keep Mateer and its starting offense on the field deep into the second half if the Sooners build the type of margin expected from a 40.5-point favorite. Whitt Newbauer, Jett Niu or highly regarded freshman Bowe Bentley can handle late-game quarterback work while Oklahoma leans more heavily on its running backs and shortens the game.
That matters for an Under this high. Oklahoma does not need to struggle offensively. A 35-7, 38-7 or 42-7 game all stays below 51.5, and each represents a completely dominant Sooners performance. The wager is primarily asking UTEP to remain in single digits while Oklahoma eventually takes its foot off the gas.

Oklahoma's defense is the strongest unit on the field by a massive margin. The Sooners allowed only 15.5 points per game against an SEC schedule last season, ranked third nationally against the run and led the country in both sacks and tackles for loss. UTEP now asks a new quarterback to solve that group in his first game after transferring from the FCS level.
The bigger concern is Oklahoma scoring enough by itself to break the total, but the 40.5-point spread actually helps the Under argument. If Mateer and the starters create a huge lead, protecting them becomes more important than chasing additional touchdowns in the second half. Oklahoma should dominate without needing to turn the opener into a 50-point offensive performance.
