4 Minute ReadBall State vs. Ohio State Prediction: Will Ball State Put Up a Fight Against the Title Favorites?
Ball State travels to Ohio Stadium on Saturday afternoon to face top-ranked Ohio State in the season opener for both programs. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 PM ET on Big Ten Network, with the Buckeyes favored by more than 50 points before a much more significant trip to Texas next weekend.
Ohio State enters with national championship expectations behind Heisman finalist Sayin and superstar receiver Smith, but the roster is not completely intact from last year. Ryan Day has 51 newcomers to integrate, and the Buckeyes return only three defensive starters from a unit that was historically dominant in 2025. Ball State has plenty of turnover itself, including a new starting quarterback in Texas State transfer Keldric Luster.

Ball State vs. Ohio State Line Movement and Betting Splits
Ohio State opened around -49.5 before moving through 50 to -50.5, while the total has remained in the mid-50s. The Buckeyes are receiving 67% of spread bets, so the favorite remains the much more popular side by ticket count.
The money distribution tells a very different story. Ball State has only 33% of spread bets but 69% of the handle, compared with 31% of the money on Ohio State. That is a major larger-wager lean toward the underdog, although the spread moving slightly toward Ohio State rather than Ball State keeps it from being a clean reverse-line signal.
Ball State vs. Ohio State Prediction
Ohio State can score quickly enough to make any +50.5 ticket uncomfortable. Sayin completed 77% of his passes for 3,610 yards and 32 touchdowns last season, and Smith returns after becoming the fastest player in Ohio State history to several major receiving milestones. Bo Jackson is also back in the backfield behind an offense returning eight starters.
Ball State's defense is almost completely rebuilt, with only two regular starters returning from 2025. That is obviously concerning against the best collection of offensive talent the Cardinals will see all year, particularly with Ohio State capable of attacking vertically or simply overwhelming the front with Jackson.
The handicap becomes more interesting once the number reaches 50.5. Ohio State could dominate essentially every meaningful snap and still fail to cover. A 49-3 or 52-7 result would be a complete mismatch on the field while still cashing a Ball State ticket.
Luster also changes the profile of a Ball State offense that became far too one-dimensional last season. The 5-foot-10, 250-pound quarterback brings legitimate power as a runner and gives the Cardinals a dual-threat element they lacked consistently in 2025. His passing experience is extremely limited, with only 12 career attempts, but his ability to scramble and extend drives becomes useful when simply trying to manufacture one or two scoring possessions.
Ball State also returns experienced pieces along the offensive line, including tackles Chris Hood and Tristan Cook, although Cole Mosier will miss the opener. The Cardinals do not need sustained offensive success. Even seven points could dramatically change the difficulty of Ohio State covering a number above 50.
Ohio State's defensive personnel remains dramatically more talented, but eight defensive starters are gone from last year's historic group. Jermaine Mathews Jr., Kenyatta Jackson Jr. and Jaylen McClain are the only returning starters, meaning the Buckeyes will use this game to evaluate new combinations before traveling to Texas next week.
That scheduling spot is the biggest reason not to lay the enormous spread. Sayin and the first-team offense should have every opportunity to build a huge first-half lead, but once the game is decided, Day has little incentive to expose Smith, Jackson or other foundational pieces deep into the second half with Texas immediately ahead.
Ohio State destroyed Grambling State 70-0 last season, proving that the Buckeyes are capable of covering almost any number against an overwhelmed opponent. But their next Group of Five matchup produced only a 37-9 win over Ohio, a 28-point margin. Ball State also lost its two 2025 road games against Power Four opponents by 31 and 39 points, both comfortably inside Saturday's current 50.5.
Ball State vs. Ohio State Best Bet
- Pick:Ball State +50.5 (-112) Check out these best odds at FanDuel Sportsbook
Ohio State should dominate this game, but asking any team to win by 51 points creates a very different betting question than asking whether the Buckeyes are vastly superior. Ball State can lose by seven touchdowns and still cover, while Luster's mobility gives the Cardinals at least some chance to manufacture points against an Ohio State defense replacing eight starters.
The betting profile adds to the value. Only one-third of the tickets are on Ball State, yet the Cardinals are attracting 69% of the spread money. With Texas waiting next week and Ohio State likely to rotate heavily once the game is secure, +50.5 offers enough cushion to back the massive underdog even in a game the Buckeyes should control from start to finish.
