North Texas travels to Bloomington on Saturday afternoon to face No. 6 Indiana at Merchants Bank Field at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET on FOX, with the defending national champions favored by more than 40 points in their first game since completing a perfect 16-0 season.
The matchup looks completely different than it would have at the end of last season. North Texas produced one of the best years in program history before head coach Eric Morris, quarterback Drew Mestemaker and a huge collection of contributors left for Oklahoma State. Indiana lost Heisman Trophy winner Fernando Mendoza to the NFL, but Curt Cignetti responded by adding Hoover and another strong transfer class to a roster still built to contend nationally.
North Texas vs. Indiana Recent Results
North Texas finished 12-2 overall and 7-1 in AAC play last season, setting a program record for victories. The Mean Green lost 34-21 to Tulane in the AAC Championship Game before finishing on a high note with a 49-47 New Mexico Bowl victory over San Diego State. North Texas led the FBS with 45.1 points per game, but the offense responsible for that production has been almost completely dismantled.
Indiana completed a perfect 16-0 season and went 9-0 in Big Ten play before beating Ohio State 13-10 for the conference championship. The Hoosiers then rolled through Alabama and Oregon in the College Football Playoff before defeating Miami 27-21 for the national title. Indiana averaged 41.6 points while allowing only 11.7 per game, producing one of the largest scoring margins in the country.

Indiana piled up 593 total yards in the most recent matchup, including 363 on the ground, as Tevin Coleman rushed for 150 yards and the Hoosiers scored 21 points in both the first and third quarters. North Texas had won the first meeting three years earlier after building a 21-0 halftime advantage and surviving an Indiana fourth-quarter comeback.
There is also a significant current connection between the programs. North Texas starting quarterback Tayven Jackson played at Indiana from 2023 through 2024 and made six starts for the Hoosiers before eventually transferring to UCF and then North Texas. Saturday sends the Greenwood, Indiana native back into a stadium he knows extremely well.

North Texas vs. Indiana Line Movement and Betting Splits
Indiana opened around -40.5 and the spread has largely held at that massive number, while the total has climbed from roughly 55.5 to 56.5. There has been no meaningful resistance pushing the defending champions below the original spread despite the size of the favorite.
Indiana is attracting roughly 70% of spread bets and 72% of the money, making the Hoosiers a clear public favorite without a major bets-to-money discrepancy. The Over is receiving even heavier support with 76% of tickets and 83% of the handle, which helps explain the upward move in the total.
North Texas vs. Indiana Prediction
North Texas' 2025 numbers are almost useless when evaluating this year's offense because so much of the unit followed Morris to Oklahoma State. Mestemaker threw for 4,129 yards, Caleb Hawkins rushed for 1,236 and Wyatt Young produced 1,209 receiving yards last season. All three are now Cowboys, and Oklahoma State's 2026 roster includes 18 players who were on North Texas' team a year ago.
Neal Brown has rebuilt quickly through the portal, but this is still a difficult group to expect immediate cohesion from. Jackson won the starting quarterback job after throwing for 2,151 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions at UCF last season. Running back Jahiem White gives North Texas an established Power Four weapon, but the Mean Green are integrating transfers throughout the offense and essentially starting over at every major position.
That is a brutal situation against an Indiana defense that allowed only 266 total yards and 11.7 points per game last season. The Hoosiers held opponents to 77.2 rushing yards per game and 3.0 yards per carry while forcing nearly two turnovers per contest. Six defensive starters return, and Cignetti also kept all three coordinators following the championship run.
Indiana has its own transition at quarterback, but Hoover is about as proven as a replacement can be. He threw for 3,472 yards and 29 touchdowns at TCU last season and arrives with 31 career starts. Instead of using the opener simply to protect him, Indiana has every reason to give Hoover significant live-game work in the new offense before the schedule becomes more difficult.
Cignetti has also shown very little interest in easing off merely because a game becomes lopsided. Indiana beat Kennesaw State 56-9, Indiana State 73-0, Illinois 63-10, UCLA 56-6, Maryland 55-10 and Purdue 56-3 last season. Even in the CFP semifinal, the Hoosiers kept attacking in a 56-22 victory over Oregon. This is a program that uses blowouts to maintain its standard rather than simply killing the clock for two quarters.
That approach matters when laying 40.5 points. Hoover needs repetitions with new additions such as Michigan State transfer Nick Marsh, and Indiana's second-string offense should still own a significant talent advantage against a North Texas roster pieced together during one offseason. The Hoosiers do not necessarily need the starters playing deep into the fourth quarter to continue scoring.
North Texas was one of the country's best Group of Five teams last season, but this is no longer that team. The Mean Green lost the coach, quarterback, leading running back, leading receiver and a long list of additional contributors responsible for the historic season. Indiana, meanwhile, has retained the infrastructure of a national championship program and replaced Mendoza with one of the most productive returning quarterbacks in college football.

Forty points is an enormous number, but this matchup presents the rare roster-reset situation where it is justified. North Texas is essentially beginning from scratch after an epic 2025 season, while Indiana still owns one of the deepest rosters in the country and should immediately overwhelm the Mean Green defensively.
The biggest reason to lay the points is Cignetti's approach. Hoover needs real snaps, the new offensive pieces need repetitions together and Indiana repeatedly turned mismatches into 50 and 60-point performances last season. If North Texas struggles to reach double digits against an elite Hoosiers defense, Indiana has a realistic path to covering -40.5 without needing anything unusual from its offense.
