Ohio vs. Nebraska Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Saturday, September 5th

Ohio heads to Lincoln for a difficult season opener against a Nebraska program entering Year 4 under Matt Rhule. The Cornhuskers have plenty of veteran experience, but Dylan Raiola’s departure creates a major change at quarterback, while Ohio brings a physical rushing identity and a defense that already has experience slowing Nebraska’s new starter. Check out this Ohio vs. Nebraska prediction and best bet for Saturday, September 5.

Ohio vs. Nebraska Prediction: Will Nebraska Struggle in First Game with Anthony Colandrea at QB?

Ohio opens its 2026 season on the road against Nebraska at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET on FS1, with the Cornhuskers favored by 23.5 points as both programs introduce new starting quarterbacks.

Nebraska is not undergoing a complete rebuild, returning six starters on each side of the ball and adding an experienced transfer class. The biggest transition comes under center, where UNLV transfer Anthony Colandrea replaces Raiola after the former Nebraska starter moved to Oregon. Ohio also has plenty of turnover, but John Hauser takes over after coaching the Bobcats to a bowl victory as interim head coach last December.

Ohio vs. Nebraska Recent Results

Ohio finished 9-4 overall and 6-2 in MAC play last season, reaching nine victories for the fourth consecutive year. The Bobcats closed with three straight wins, including a 17-10 victory over a 10-win UNLV team in the Frisco Bowl, and allowed only 10 points in each of their final two games.

Nebraska went 7-6 overall and 4-5 in Big Ten play, posting a second consecutive winning season under Rhule. The Cornhuskers struggled late, however, and finished with a 44-22 loss to Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl. Nebraska averaged 28.7 points per game while allowing 24.6, with four of its six defeats coming against ranked opponents.

Ohio vs. Nebraska Head to Head

Saturday marks the first football meeting between Ohio and Nebraska.

The programs still share one of the strongest coaching connections on the Week 1 slate through Frank Solich. Solich went 58-19 as Nebraska's head coach before eventually becoming the winningest coach in Ohio history, and he will be honored in Lincoln before the game.

There is another much more immediate connection. Colandrea quarterbacked UNLV against Ohio in last December's Frisco Bowl and was held to 184 passing yards as the Bobcats won 17-10. Ohio's roster has changed since then, but Hauser and his staff have already prepared for Colandrea's mobility and tendencies in a meaningful game.

Ohio vs. Nebraska Line Movement and Betting Splits

Nebraska opened -23.5 and the spread has largely held there, while the total has dropped from 47.5 to 46.5. That lack of movement is notable given how aggressively bettors have backed Ohio.

Ohio is drawing roughly 90% of spread bets but only 62% of the money, while Nebraska has about 10% of tickets and 38% of the handle. The Bobcats are clearly the public side by ticket count, but the much larger average wager is actually landing on Nebraska, so there is no reason to force a sharp-money argument behind Ohio here.

Ohio vs. Nebraska Prediction

Raiola's departure changes the shape of Nebraska's offense even if the overall roster remains experienced. He completed 72.4% of his passes for 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns in nine games last season before suffering a season-ending injury, and he is now at Oregon. Colandrea brings plenty of experience, but he is still making his first start in a new system with new personnel around him.

Colandrea is a dangerous dual-threat option and was the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year at UNLV, but Ohio has already shown it can keep him from taking over a game. The Bobcats held UNLV to 10 points in December and built that victory around long possessions and defense. That familiarity matters when Ohio is getting more than three touchdowns.

The Bobcats should again try to make this a physical game on the ground. Duncan Brune rushed for 585 yards and eight touchdowns as a backup last season and now moves into a larger role, while UConn transfer Victor Rosa adds another experienced option. Ohio averaged 227.4 rushing yards per game in 2025, and running the football is the clearest way to shorten the game and prevent Nebraska from creating enough possessions to cover a huge number.

Nebraska's run defense gives Ohio some reason for confidence. The Cornhuskers surrendered 175.4 rushing yards per game and 4.8 yards per carry last season, a weakness that remained one of the clearest issues on an otherwise respectable defense. Nebraska added talent to the front seven, but Ohio does not need to dominate the matchup. It only needs enough successful early-down runs to keep drives alive and bleed clock.

Quarterback is the obvious concern for the underdog. Nick Poulos has very limited FBS experience and takes over an offense returning only one 2025 starter at the skill positions. At 6-foot-5 and roughly 235 pounds, however, Poulos gives Ohio another rushing threat and should not need to win the game through high-volume passing if Brune and the ground attack are productive.

Ohio also enters with major defensive turnover, but the linebacking corps remains one of the stronger pieces on the roster. That is especially valuable against a Nebraska team expected to use Colandrea's legs and establish the run while its new quarterback settles into the offense. If the Bobcats can force longer drives rather than explosive touchdowns, every possession taken off the board becomes valuable with +23.5.

Nebraska is the better team and should win at home, but laying more than three touchdowns requires the Cornhuskers to separate quickly and consistently. They are coming off consecutive 7-6 seasons, replacing a quarterback who had become the centerpiece of the offense and facing an Ohio program that has won at least nine games in four straight seasons. The gap is substantial, but 23.5 points gives the Bobcats plenty of room to turn a respectable road performance into a cover.

Ohio vs. Nebraska Best Bet

Ohio has its own major turnover concerns, but the number compensates for them. The Bobcats can build their game plan around Brune, Poulos' mobility and a physical run-first approach against a Nebraska defense that struggled to stop the run last season.

The Colandrea angle also gives Ohio additional familiarity that most Week 1 underdogs do not have. Hauser's defense held his UNLV offense to 10 points in the Frisco Bowl only nine months ago. Nebraska should win, but with a new quarterback replacing Raiola and the Bobcats capable of shortening the game, asking the Cornhuskers to win by 24 or more is too aggressive.
