Oregon State travels to Houston on Saturday afternoon to face No. 23 Houston at TDECU Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET on ESPN, with the Cougars favored by more than 20 points in a rematch of last season's overtime meeting.
Houston enters with much more continuity after a 10-win breakthrough under Willie Fritz, while Oregon State is introducing a new head coach, new offensive system and another new starting quarterback. That experience gap should favor Houston, but it does not necessarily point toward a high-scoring game.
Oregon State vs. Houston Recent Results
Oregon State finished 2-10 last season while competing as an independent, losing its final three games and closing with a 32-8 defeat at Washington State. The Beavers averaged only 18.2 points per game and scored 17 points or fewer in seven of their 12 contests. This season marks their return to conference play as part of the rebuilt Pac-12.
Houston went 10-3 overall and 6-3 in Big 12 play, finishing No. 22 in the AP Poll. The Cougars capped the season by beating LSU 38-35 in the Texas Bowl and averaged 29.1 points per game while allowing 22.8. Conner Weigman threw for 2,705 yards and 25 touchdowns while also adding 700 rushing yards and 11 scores.

Oregon State vs. Houston Line Movement and Betting Splits
Houston opened around -18.5 and has climbed into the -20.5 to -21 range, showing clear support for the Cougars. The total opened at 50.5, briefly reached 51.5 at points during the week and has returned to the 50.5 range.
The Over has attracted 77% of total bets and 68% of the money, compared with only 23% of tickets and 32% of the handle on the Under. Despite that public preference for points, the number has resisted moving higher and has actually come back down from its weekly peak, which makes the Under side more interesting.
Oregon State vs. Houston Prediction
Oregon State's biggest question is how quickly an almost completely new offensive setup can function against a ranked opponent. Shephard takes over after the Beavers averaged just 18.2 points last season, and Atkinson becomes their eighth different season-opening starting quarterback in eight years.
Atkinson is not a typical inexperienced starter. He won the Jerry Rice Award at Mercer after throwing for 3,596 yards and 34 touchdowns while completing 66% of his passes as a freshman. He topped 300 yards eight times, including a 533-yard performance against VMI, giving Oregon State legitimate upside at the position.
The transition from the FCS level to opening against Houston is still substantial. Atkinson is learning a new offense with a rebuilt supporting cast while facing a Cougars team that won 10 games and allowed 129 rushing yards per contest last season. Oregon State should have some explosive-play potential, but consistently sustaining drives is a different challenge.
Houston has considerably more stability with Weigman returning. He completed 65.2% of his passes last year and accounted for 36 touchdowns between the air and ground. Amare Thomas also returns after catching 67 passes for 966 yards and 12 touchdowns, giving Houston an established quarterback-receiver combination from the opening snap.
That does not mean Fritz needs to turn this into a track meet. Houston rushed the ball more than 42 times per game last season and now adds Makhi Hughes to an offense built to control the line of scrimmage. If the Cougars establish a comfortable lead as the 20-plus point favorite, a run-heavy second half becomes much more likely than four quarters of aggressive passing.
Oregon State also has defensive experience to build around while veteran coordinator Mike MacIntyre takes over that side of the ball. Aiden Sullivan and Jaheim Patterson are among the returning pieces, and the Beavers already held this Houston offense to 24 points in regulation last season.
The number leaves room for Houston to dominate without threatening the Over. A 31-10, 34-13 or 35-14 type of game stays below 50.5, and Oregon State's offensive transition makes it difficult to count on the Beavers contributing enough to force Houston into a faster second-half pace.

Last year's meeting produced only 48 points in regulation, and Oregon State now enters the rematch with a new head coach, new system and a quarterback making his first FBS start. Atkinson has legitimate talent, but immediately translating his Mercer production against a ranked Big 12 opponent is a demanding assignment.
Houston should control the game, but that actually supports the Under. Fritz can lean on the running game once the Cougars establish separation, while Oregon State may struggle to reach the mid-teens. With the Over attracting heavy public action without forcing the total higher, Under 50.5 offers the stronger game-script angle.
