No. 21 FCS Richmond travels to Raleigh on Friday night to face NC State at Wayne Day Family Field at Carter-Finley Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET on ESPNU, with the Wolfpack favored by 30.5 points after having a week off following their season-opening loss.
Richmond is already 2-0 and has shown enough defensive strength to make this more interesting from a totals perspective. NC State should control the matchup physically, but the Wolfpack first need to prove that their offense has corrected the problems that surfaced against Virginia.
Richmond vs. NC State Recent Results
Richmond improved to 2-0 with a 28-21 road win over Howard after opening with a 35-14 victory over Bucknell. The Spiders held Howard to 240 total yards, only 109 through the air and 4-of-16 on third downs while recording four sacks. Quarterback Kyle Snelsire threw for 261 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Richmond finished 7-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play last season.
NC State has not played since its 34-8 loss at Virginia on August 29. The Wolfpack produced only 168 total yards, 10 first downs and eight points, with CJ Bailey completing 12 of 23 passes for 84 yards and an interception. NC State went 8-5 and 4-4 in ACC play last season before closing with three straight wins, including a 31-7 Gasparilla Bowl victory over Memphis.

Richmond vs. NC State Line Movement and Betting Splits
NC State has spent most of the week around -30 to -30.5, while the total has fallen from approximately 49.5 to 48.5. That total move is more important than the relatively stable spread.
The Over has attracted 75% of total bets but only 46% of the money. The Under owns just 25% of tickets yet 54% of the handle, indicating that the average Under wager is significantly larger. That split lines up directly with the one-point move downward.
Richmond vs. NC State Prediction
NC State has had nearly two weeks to fix its offense, but the Virginia performance created issues that cannot simply be dismissed because the next opponent is from the FCS. The Wolfpack averaged just 3.3 yards per play, threw for fewer than 100 yards and did not score until late in the third quarter.
Bailey is much more talented than those numbers suggest, but this should be a get-right game rather than an invitation to play at maximum tempo. NC State can establish the running game, protect Bailey with easier throws and rebuild confidence without asking the offense to consistently attack vertically.
Richmond's defense is capable of making that approach even more deliberate. The Spiders have allowed 35 combined points through two games, and Howard completed only nine passes on 28 attempts last weekend. Richmond also produced four sacks, six tackles for loss and two takeaways.
The other side of the matchup provides the stronger Under argument. Richmond has been productive against Bucknell and Howard, but moving from those defenses to an ACC front is a substantial jump. NC State still has enough speed and depth to force Snelsire into quicker decisions than he has faced so far.
The Wolfpack also showed last season that their defense can overwhelm lesser opponents. NC State beat Campbell 56-10, held Florida State to 11 and finished the year by allowing Memphis only seven points in the bowl game. This is a favorable opportunity for the defense to look much more like that late-season version after Virginia controlled possession for more than 38 minutes in the opener.
Richmond's 2-0 start makes it less likely that the Spiders completely collapse, which can also work in favor of the Under. A competitive FCS defense that forces NC State to string together longer drives is more useful here than an opponent surrendering immediate explosive touchdowns.
The total sits below 50 for a reason. NC State can win 35-7, 38-7 or 35-10 and still keep this game Under. After what the Wolfpack offense showed in Charlottesville, asking it to carry almost the entire scoring burden toward 49 points is too aggressive.

NC State should look considerably better after its bye, but improvement does not require an offensive explosion. The Wolfpack can control the game through defense and field position while Bailey works back into rhythm against an opponent it should eventually overpower.
Richmond has allowed only 17.5 points per game through two weeks, while NC State scored eight in its only appearance. With 54% of the money on the Under despite only 25% of the tickets and the total already falling from 49.5 to 48.5, the lower-scoring side has the stronger profile.
