North Texas vs. Tulsa Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Thursday, October 1st

The North Texas Mean Green visit H.A. Chapman Stadium for a Thursday night American Conference opener against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Can Tayven Jackson and Jahiem White break through a Tulsa defense that has carried the Golden Hurricane through a 3-1 start? Check out this North Texas vs. Tulsa prediction and best bet for Thursday, October 1.

North Texas vs. Tulsa Prediction: Can North Texas Earn Road Win in American Conference Opener?

North Texas and Tulsa open American Conference play Thursday night in one of the more intriguing games of the Week 5 weekday slate. Kickoff is set for 9:00 PM ET on ESPN at H.A. Chapman Stadium, with North Texas now laying 1.5 points after spending much of the buildup on the underdog side of the market.

The matchup presents a clear contrast. North Texas enters at 2-2 behind one of the most productive offenses in the country, while 3-1 Tulsa has built its start around a defense allowing barely 15 points per game. The question is whether that defense can hold up against the best passing attack it has faced this season.

North Texas vs. Tulsa Recent Results

North Texas Mean Green (2-2), (0-0 American)

North Texas rolled into conference play with a 63-14 demolition of Houston Christian. Jahiem White needed only 11 carries to rush for 133 yards and four touchdowns, while the Mean Green finished with their second blowout home win of the season.

Quarterback Tayven Jackson has been the centerpiece of Neal Brown’s rebuilt offense. Jackson has completed 95 of 128 passes for 1,187 yards, six touchdowns and only two interceptions, good for a 74.2% completion rate and nearly 297 passing yards per game.

The offense is producing 516 yards and 39.5 points per game despite major personnel turnover from last season. The concern is a defense that has been much less stable. North Texas held UNLV to six points in a 44-6 win, but Texas State ran for 337 yards in a 49-35 victory one week later despite Jackson throwing for 492 yards.

Tulsa Golden Hurricane (3-1), (0-0 American)

Tulsa’s perfect start ended with a 34-6 loss at Arkansas last Saturday. The Golden Hurricane managed only 241 total yards, including 65 on the ground, and possessed the ball for just 22:29 as Arkansas gradually pulled away.

That result followed a strong opening month. Tulsa beat Oklahoma State 24-10, won 23-17 at Sam Houston and shut out East Texas A&M 42-0. The defense has been the foundation, allowing only 15.25 points and 367 total yards per game while surrendering just two rushing touchdowns through four contests.

The major personnel development is the expected return of Baylor Hayes. The starting quarterback missed the last two games after suffering a knee sprain at Sam Houston and dressed without playing at Arkansas. Hayes has completed 33 of 53 passes for 353 yards with one touchdown and one interception this season.

Tulsa still needs considerably more from its offense. The Golden Hurricane are averaging 354.8 yards and 23.8 points while converting only 27.3% of their third downs. Damari Alston and Trequan Jones give them a capable rushing combination, but the passing game has averaged only 173.3 yards.

North Texas vs. Tulsa Head to Head

Tulsa leads the all-time series 17-9, but North Texas has controlled the recent meetings. The Mean Green have won three straight in the series entering Thursday.

  • September 28, 2024: North Texas 52, Tulsa 20
  • November 18, 2023: North Texas 35, Tulsa 28
  • November 30, 2013: North Texas 42, Tulsa 10
  • October 1, 2011: Tulsa 41, North Texas 24

The 2024 meeting was particularly decisive. North Texas erupted for 618 total yards, including 439 through the air, and scored 45 unanswered points after Tulsa opened the scoring.

Most of the personnel responsible for that result is gone, so it carries limited direct handicapping value. What remains relevant is the matchup pattern: North Texas has repeatedly been able to create explosive offense against Tulsa, and this year’s rebuilt unit has quickly developed the same type of high-end passing capability.

North Texas vs. Tulsa Line Movement and Betting Splits

This has been one of the more significant moves on the Thursday board. Tulsa opened around a 2.5-point favorite, but the market has crossed through pick’em and North Texas is now laying 1.5 points at the current book. Moving from Tulsa -2.5 to North Texas -1.5 represents a substantial four-point shift.

The betting splits are more nuanced. DraftKings moneyline numbers have shown Tulsa with 59% of bets but only around 51% of the handle, leaving North Texas with 41% of tickets and 49% of the money. That means the average moneyline wager has been larger on North Texas even with fewer individual bets.

Spread betting has leaned differently, with North Texas attracting the majority of tickets while more of the spread handle sits on Tulsa at +1.5. That disagreement makes the moneyline appealing at only -116, particularly after such a large move through zero.

North Texas vs. Tulsa Prediction

Tulsa’s defense is legitimate, but this is a difficult stylistic matchup for it. The Golden Hurricane are giving up only 15.25 points per game and have been outstanding against the run, holding opponents to 109.8 rushing yards per game and 3.1 yards per carry. North Texas cannot assume White will reproduce the huge rushing lanes he found against Houston Christian.

The difference is that the Mean Green do not need the running game to carry them. Jackson is completing more than 74% of his passes and has already thrown for 1,187 yards. Justin Stevenson, Corri Milliner, Max Reese and the rest of this receiving group give North Texas enough options to spread Tulsa horizontally before attacking downfield.

Tulsa’s defensive profile also points toward the passing game as the better route. The Golden Hurricane are allowing 257.3 passing yards per game compared with only 109.8 on the ground. Arkansas receiver Chris Marshall just produced 195 yards against this secondary, showing that a strong passing offense can create explosive plays even when Tulsa controls the line of scrimmage.

White remains important because Tulsa cannot completely sell out against Jackson. He has 363 rushing yards through four games and is coming off a four-touchdown performance. Even if Tulsa keeps him closer to four yards per carry than the explosive numbers he posted last week, his presence should prevent the Golden Hurricane from consistently dropping extra defenders into coverage.

Tulsa’s best path is on the other side of the ball. North Texas allowed 337 rushing yards at Texas State, and Alston and Jones give Tulsa the personnel to test that weakness. Hayes returning at quarterback also raises the ceiling after the offense struggled without him at Arkansas.

The concern is what happens if North Texas creates early separation. Tulsa has not scored more than 24 points against an FBS opponent this season and is converting fewer than 28% of its third downs. A game in which the Golden Hurricane can run, play field position and protect its defense is dangerous for North Texas. A game that forces Tulsa to chase Jackson into the high 20s or 30s strongly favors the Mean Green.

That offensive reliability is the separator. North Texas has moved the ball against every type of opponent, including producing 35 points and 492 passing yards in its road loss at Texas State. Tulsa’s defense can keep this competitive, but the Mean Green have more ways to create points and a quarterback currently operating at a much higher level than anything Tulsa has shown through the air.

North Texas vs. Tulsa Best Bet

At only -116, the moneyline is worth the slight premium over North Texas -1.5. This has already moved from Tulsa being favored to North Texas laying points, and removing the spread protects against a one-point road win in a matchup where Tulsa’s defense and home field could keep the margin tight.

Jackson gives North Texas the best offensive player in the matchup, while the Mean Green can attack Tulsa through the portion of the defense that has been most vulnerable. If North Texas reaches the upper 20s, Tulsa’s offense faces a difficult task keeping pace.
