Western Kentucky vs. New Mexico State Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Thursday, October 1st

The Western Kentucky Hilltoppers travel to Las Cruces for a Thursday night Conference USA opener against the New Mexico State Aggies. Can Rodney Tisdale Jr. and WKU’s rejuvenated passing game keep pace with James Jones and an Aggies offense that has moved the ball better than its 1-3 record suggests? Check out this Western Kentucky vs. New Mexico State prediction and best bet for Thursday, October 1.

Western Kentucky vs. New Mexico State Prediction: Can New Mexico State Outlast WKU in Conference USA Opener on Thursday Night?

Conference USA takes center stage Thursday night as Western Kentucky visits New Mexico State at Aggie Memorial Stadium for an 8:00 PM ET kickoff on CBS Sports Network. Both teams enter conference play at 1-3, with New Mexico State sitting as a narrow 1.5-point home favorite and the total at 56.5.

The records look similar, but the paths have been different. WKU finally broke through with a 52-7 demolition of Mercyhurst after opening the year with three consecutive road losses, while New Mexico State is trying to recover from a rivalry loss to New Mexico despite an offense averaging more than 400 yards per game.

Western Kentucky vs. New Mexico State Recent Results

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers (1-3), (0-0 CUSA)

Western Kentucky finally reached the win column Saturday with a 52-7 victory over Mercyhurst in its home opener. The Hilltoppers piled up 596 yards, with Rodney Tisdale Jr. completing 19 of 23 passes for 309 yards and four touchdowns before Brock Glenn added 101 passing yards, two scores and a rushing touchdown in relief.

That explosion came after a brutal three-game road stretch. WKU opened with a 49-14 loss at Nevada, followed it with a 70-20 defeat at No. 2 Georgia and then was shut out 38-0 at No. 4 Indiana. Georgia and Indiana obviously raise the level of competition considerably, but the Nevada loss remains concerning because WKU allowed 323 rushing yards and 7.7 yards per carry.

The Mercyhurst performance provided evidence that this offense can still resemble the productive units normally associated with Tyson Helton. Tisdale was far more efficient, the running game produced 189 yards and seven different Hilltoppers reached the end zone. Thursday will reveal how much of that was a genuine offensive step forward and how much came from the major drop in competition.

New Mexico State Aggies (1-3), (0-0 CUSA)

New Mexico State fell 42-18 to New Mexico in the Rio Grande Rivalry last Saturday, but the final score does not tell the entire story. The Aggies trailed just 14-3 at halftime before two costly turnovers helped New Mexico score on three consecutive possessions and stretch the game to 35-3.

Running back James Jones remained a bright spot with 112 rushing yards, his second 100-yard performance of the season. Jones now has 355 yards on 57 carries, averaging 6.2 yards per attempt, and has emerged as one of the most reliable pieces in the New Mexico State offense.

The Aggies are averaging 414.5 total yards and 278.5 passing yards per game while converting 50% of their third downs. Trey Hedden has handled most of the passing volume with 887 yards and five touchdowns, but his five interceptions have been costly. Adam Damante has been extremely efficient in limited action, completing 19 of 22 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, including two late scoring throws to Myles Libman against New Mexico.

Western Kentucky vs. New Mexico State Head to Head

Western Kentucky leads the young all-time series 2-1, with all three previous meetings coming since New Mexico State joined Conference USA. The Hilltoppers have won the last two after the Aggies took the inaugural meeting in 2023.

  • November 1, 2025: Western Kentucky 35, New Mexico State 16
  • November 9, 2024: Western Kentucky 41, New Mexico State 28
  • November 11, 2023: New Mexico State 38, Western Kentucky 29

Last season’s result deserves some attention because Tisdale remains part of the equation. He threw for 301 yards as WKU turned a 6-0 deficit into a comfortable 35-16 victory.

The rosters surrounding him have changed enough that the result should not dictate Thursday’s handicap, but Western Kentucky has already shown it can win in Las Cruces, taking the 2024 meeting 41-28. New Mexico State therefore needs to reverse a recent matchup trend while also cleaning up the turnovers that damaged it last week.

Western Kentucky vs. New Mexico State Line Movement and Betting Splits

New Mexico State opened around a 1.5-point favorite, and the broader market has periodically pushed the Aggies out to -2.5. This market is currently back at New Mexico State -1.5 (-113), while the moneyline offers the Aggies at -125.

DraftKings moneyline betting splits have shown stronger support for New Mexico State, with roughly 65% of tickets accounting for 77% of the handle. The spread market is more divided, with WKU drawing the larger share of money when getting +2.5, which makes the moneyline a particularly interesting way to back the home team without asking the Aggies to clear a margin.

Western Kentucky vs. New Mexico State Prediction

The scheduling situation gives New Mexico State an edge that should not be ignored. Both teams played Saturday and are working on a short week, but the Aggies remain in Las Cruces after hosting New Mexico. WKU finally returned home last week after three straight road games and now immediately travels west again, making Thursday its fourth road contest in five games.

That becomes more important because New Mexico State has a rushing attack capable of forcing WKU to defend physically for four quarters. Jones is averaging 6.2 yards per carry and has topped 100 yards twice in the last three games. Nevada exposed the Hilltoppers badly on the ground, running for 323 yards, and the Aggies do not need to become overly dependent on their quarterbacks if Jones is consistently creating manageable down-and-distance situations.

The passing game gives New Mexico State another path. The Aggies are averaging 278.5 passing yards per game, with TK King leading the receiving corps at 265 yards while Josiah Thomas, AJ Williams III and Libman provide additional options. New Mexico State has enough diversity to attack WKU underneath and vertically rather than becoming a one-dimensional rushing offense.

Turnovers are the biggest obstacle. Hedden has thrown five interceptions, and two giveaways helped turn last week’s rivalry game from a competitive contest into a blowout. That is the clearest way Western Kentucky can flip this matchup. If the Aggies give Tisdale short fields and extra possessions, WKU has enough passing talent to punish them.

There is also legitimate reason for caution after WKU’s offensive breakout. Tisdale looked excellent against Mercyhurst, and his history against New Mexico State is a positive for the Hilltoppers. Still, that performance came after WKU produced 34 combined points in its first three games, including zero at Indiana. One dominant result against an FCS opponent is not enough to erase the inconsistency that preceded it.

The common-opponent comparison also offers very little reason to separate these teams. New Mexico State beat Mercyhurst 51-14, while Western Kentucky beat the Lakers 52-7. Both handled that assignment easily, which reinforces the idea that Thursday is closer to a true toss-up than either team’s most recent result might suggest.

In that type of game, home field, the travel situation and New Mexico State’s more established rushing identity become meaningful. The Aggies can shorten possessions with Jones, use play action to access King and the other receivers, and avoid putting the entire game on Hedden’s shoulders. If New Mexico State simply avoids the cluster of turnovers that buried it against New Mexico, the offense should create enough scoring opportunities to win at home.

Western Kentucky vs. New Mexico State Best Bet

The moneyline is preferable to laying -1.5 in a matchup carrying plenty of one-score potential. Paying a relatively small premium from the spread price removes the risk of New Mexico State winning by a single point while preserving the core handicap.

WKU’s 52-point performance creates some uncertainty, but New Mexico State has the stronger rushing centerpiece, home field and a meaningful scheduling advantage on the short week. A cleaner turnover performance should be enough for the Aggies to open Conference USA play with a home victory.
