5 Minute ReadLiberty vs. Delaware Prediction: Will Flames Offense Continue Rolling on Friday Night?
Liberty visits Delaware Stadium on Friday night for a 7:00 PM ET Conference USA matchup on CBS Sports Network. The Flames are 3-1 after rebounding from an opening-week loss with three consecutive victories, and they enter Newark as 7-point road favorites with the total sitting at 50.
Delaware is also opening conference play after a 2-2 start that has featured two very different versions of the Blue Hens. Delaware handled its first two home games but struggled badly last week at Virginia, setting up an important test against a Liberty team whose offense has improved each week.
Liberty vs. Delaware Recent Results
Liberty Flames (3-1), (0-0 CUSA)
Liberty extended its winning streak to three games with a 34-17 road victory over Coastal Carolina last Thursday. The Flames trailed 17-10 late in the first half before scoring the final 24 points, turning a competitive road game into another convincing victory.
The offensive development was particularly encouraging. Deshawn Purdie threw for 216 yards, Kam Davis erupted for 166 rushing yards and Makai Jackson produced 149 receiving yards with two touchdowns. Liberty finished with 263 rushing yards and 485 total yards, continuing a season-long trend in which its rushing and total offense have increased each week.
Purdie has now thrown for 779 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions, while the Flames are averaging 411.2 total yards per game. Liberty has also become increasingly difficult to play in the second half, outscoring opponents 66-14 after halftime through four games and entering this matchup without having allowed a fourth-quarter point.
Delaware Fightin' Blue Hens (2-2), (0-0 CUSA)
Delaware is trying to rebound from a 42-3 loss at Virginia in which almost nothing worked offensively. The Blue Hens managed only 160 total yards, including 71 passing, and never reached the end zone.
That performance was a major reversal from Delaware’s 22-14 home victory over Coastal Carolina one week earlier. Nick Minicucci threw for 302 yards in that game, Sean Wilson produced 185 receiving yards and the Blue Hens held Coastal scoreless after halftime.
Minicucci remains the centerpiece of the offense with 838 passing yards and five touchdowns, but he has completed just 57.3% of his attempts with three interceptions. Delaware is averaging 360 total yards per game, yet the rushing attack has produced only 98 yards per contest, putting considerable pressure on Minicucci when the Blue Hens fall behind.
Liberty vs. Delaware Head to Head
Liberty and Delaware have met only once, with the Flames winning decisively in the first matchup between the programs last season.
- November 1, 2025: Liberty 59, Delaware 30
That game developed into exactly the type of script Liberty will try to recreate Friday. Delaware threw for 344 yards, but Liberty controlled the matchup with 282 rushing yards and 561 total yards while scoring 59 points.
The personnel has changed, particularly in Liberty’s backfield and at quarterback, so the previous meeting should not be treated as a direct blueprint. The larger takeaway is that Delaware struggled to handle Liberty’s rushing structure and offensive multiplicity, two areas that are again becoming strengths for the Flames.

Liberty vs. Delaware Line Movement and Betting Splits
Liberty opened around a 7-point favorite and remains directly on that key number at -7 (-113). The bigger movement has come elsewhere, with the Flames’ moneyline climbing from roughly -230 at open to -286 while the total has dipped slightly from around 50.5 to 50.
There are no verified sportsbook betting splits worth forcing into this matchup. The useful market signal is that the spread has resisted moving away from 7 even while Liberty has become more expensive to back on the moneyline.
Liberty vs. Delaware Prediction
Liberty’s offensive trajectory is the starting point. After scoring only 13 points against James Madison and escaping Gardner-Webb 24-23, the Flames have scored 85 points over their last two games. More importantly, the improvement has come with increased balance rather than simply a spike in passing volume.
Purdie has protected the football exceptionally well. He has seven touchdown passes without an interception, and his ability to generate explosive throws without giving opponents short fields makes Liberty difficult to upset when the running game is functioning. Jackson has emerged as his primary vertical weapon and has caught a touchdown in every game.
The addition of a legitimate rushing threat makes the matchup even more difficult for Delaware. Davis’ 166-yard performance against Coastal Carolina gave Liberty its first 100-yard rushing game of the season, and the Flames have now increased their rushing output in four straight games. Chadwell can use that ground game to create favorable numbers before attacking Delaware vertically.
Delaware’s offense is much less balanced. Minicucci is an experienced quarterback capable of producing big passing totals, but the Blue Hens are averaging fewer than 100 rushing yards per game. That becomes problematic against a Liberty defense allowing only 287 total yards per game and limiting opposing quarterbacks to a 49.1% completion rate.
The turnover matchup also favors the Flames. Liberty has intercepted four passes while Purdie has yet to throw one. Minicucci has already been intercepted three times, and an offense that increasingly has to rely on him throwing into predictable passing situations gives Liberty opportunities to create extra possessions.
Delaware being back home matters. The Blue Hens are 2-0 in Newark and the building will be sold out for Parents and Family Weekend. They already showed against Coastal Carolina that they can respond defensively at home, so Liberty should not expect another effortless road game.
The difference should emerge over four quarters. Liberty has been one of the strongest second-half teams on its schedule, while its ability to run the ball gives the Flames a way to protect a lead and wear down Delaware. If the visitors avoid turnovers and make Minicucci carry the offense, the margin can move beyond one possession late.
Liberty vs. Delaware Best Bet
- Best Bet: Liberty -7 (-113) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
Holding the full -7 matters. Liberty can win by exactly one touchdown without losing the wager, while moving to -7.5 would remove that protection at one of football’s most important numbers.
The Flames have won three straight, their offense has improved every week and the defense has been particularly dominant after halftime. Delaware should be more competitive at home than it was at Virginia, but Liberty has the balance and second-half edge to eventually create separation.
