Auburn vs. Tennessee Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Saturday, October 3rd

The Auburn Tigers leave Jordan-Hare Stadium for the first time this season when they visit the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville. Can Faizon Brandon and Tennessee respond from a narrow loss to Texas against Byrum Brown and an Auburn team that has repeatedly found ways to survive close games? Check out this Auburn vs. Tennessee prediction and best bet for Saturday, October 3.

Auburn vs. Tennessee Prediction: Can Brandon Faizon, Vols Bounce Back in SEC Battle at Home?

Tennessee returns to Neyland Stadium for another SEC matchup after pushing No. 1 Texas to the final possession in a 20-17 loss. The Volunteers are 3-1 and laying exactly seven points against a 3-1 Auburn team making its first road trip of the season.

This is an important response spot for Tennessee. The Vols' offense struggled against one of the country's strongest defenses last week, but their own defense kept them within one possession throughout the afternoon and now gets an Auburn offense that needed a special teams touchdown to escape Vanderbilt.

Auburn vs. Tennessee Recent Results

Auburn Tigers (3-1), (1-1 SEC)

Auburn bounced back from its 44-39 loss to Florida by beating Vanderbilt 21-15 at home. The Tigers found a way to finish the game, but the performance was far from dominant.

Vanderbilt actually outgained Auburn 311-279. One of the Tigers' three touchdowns came on a blocked punt return, meaning the offense generated only two touchdown drives while being pushed into a one-possession finish.

Byrum Brown provided enough production to manage the game and made the decisive third-down completion that allowed Auburn to run out the clock. The Tigers have shown an ability to survive close contests, including their 17-16 opening win over Baylor, but that profile becomes much more difficult to trust in a road environment like Neyland Stadium.

Auburn's defense deserves credit for holding Vanderbilt to one touchdown. That unit has been considerably more reliable than the offense outside of the 44-point eruption allowed to Florida.

Tennessee Volunteers (3-1), (0-1 SEC)

Tennessee suffered its first loss of the season when Texas escaped Knoxville 20-17. The Volunteers trailed 20-10 late but scored on a 30-yard Faizon Brandon touchdown pass to Mike Matthews and recovered the ensuing onside kick before their final drive came up short.

Brandon finished 17 of 29 for 145 yards and a touchdown without an interception. It was his most difficult start of the season, but he again protected the football against an elite Texas defense.

Tennessee's defense gave the Vols every opportunity to win. Texas was held to 262 total yards and only 61 on the ground, while Tennessee generated six sacks and consistently prevented the Longhorns from creating explosive offense.

The Vols enter Saturday allowing 15.5 points per game. That defense is a significant reason the Texas loss looks more encouraging than damaging as Tennessee turns immediately toward another SEC home game.

Auburn vs. Tennessee Head to Head

Auburn leads the all-time series 29-22-3 and has won seven of the last eight meetings. The programs have not played since 2020, making the recent history much less directly relevant than in an annual rivalry.

  • November 21, 2020: Auburn 30, Tennessee 17
  • October 13, 2018: Tennessee 30, Auburn 24
  • November 9, 2013: Auburn 55, Tennessee 23
  • October 3, 2009: Auburn 26, Tennessee 22

Tennessee does hold a winning home record in the series, and Saturday represents Auburn's first trip to Neyland Stadium since 2013.

The long gap between meetings means the historical results have very little personnel value. The situational element is much more important, with Auburn making its first road start under this year's roster configuration against a Tennessee team already tested by Texas.

Auburn vs. Tennessee Line Movement and Betting Splits

Tennessee opened around -7.5 before the market dropped the Volunteers onto the key number of -7. The total has experienced a more substantial decline, falling from an opening range around 57.5 to the current 54.5.

DraftKings spread splits show Tennessee with roughly 64% of bets but only 42% of the handle. Auburn has received the larger share of money despite fewer tickets, indicating a larger average spread wager on the Tigers.

The total presents an even larger discrepancy, with the Under receiving the overwhelming majority of the handle despite a much smaller share of individual bets. That aligns with a market that has already cut several points from the opening total.

Auburn vs. Tennessee Prediction

Tennessee's offensive performance against Texas was disappointing, but context matters. The Volunteers were facing the No. 1 team in the country and one of the most disruptive defensive fronts on their schedule. Brandon was pressured throughout the afternoon and still avoided giving Texas an interception.

The larger takeaway was Tennessee's defense. Holding Texas to 20 points and 61 rushing yards while recording six sacks gives the Vols a strong foundation entering a matchup with an Auburn offense that has been far less consistent.

Auburn scored only 14 offensive points against Vanderbilt. Its third touchdown came on a blocked punt, and the Tigers were outgained by a Commodores team that entered Jordan-Hare Stadium as an underdog. That type of offensive output leaves very little margin for error if Tennessee can establish an early lead.

The Vols should also find more room to run. Tennessee is averaging more than 240 rushing yards per game, and that physical rushing identity can reduce the pressure on Brandon after Texas consistently disrupted the passing game. DeSean Bishop and the rest of the backfield can keep Tennessee ahead of the chains rather than asking a young quarterback to win entirely from the pocket.

The venue creates another meaningful difference. Auburn has played every game either at home or in its season-opening neutral-site matchup with Baylor, making Saturday its first true road environment. Neyland Stadium is an especially difficult place for that transition against a Tennessee defense capable of creating obvious passing downs.

Auburn's defense makes laying seven uncomfortable. The Tigers held Vanderbilt to one touchdown and have already demonstrated they can play close, low-possession games. Tennessee cannot afford to settle repeatedly for field goals or allow Auburn's special teams to manufacture another short-field score.

The number landing exactly at -7 is important. Tennessee can win by a touchdown and produce a push rather than a loss. If the Vols' defense controls Auburn's rushing game and Brandon gets the benefit of better protection than he saw against Texas, Tennessee has a realistic path to creating the second-half separation needed for a 10 to 14-point home win.

Auburn vs. Tennessee Best Bet

This is a strong bounce-back setup for Tennessee after proving it could trade punches with Texas despite an inefficient offensive afternoon. The Volunteers' defense is the best unit Auburn has faced since Florida, and the Tigers' offense just produced only two touchdowns against Vanderbilt.

Auburn can keep the game competitive with defense and field position, but Tennessee has the stronger rushing attack, the more disruptive front and a major home-field advantage. Getting the Volunteers at exactly seven rather than -7.5 provides valuable protection if the final margin lands on one touchdown.
