5 Minute ReadLouisville vs. NC State Prediction: Can C.J. Bailey, Wolfpack Bounce Back at Home After Heartbreaking Defeat to Vandy?
Louisville visits Raleigh for a 3:30 PM ET ACC matchup on ACC Network with both teams entering at 2-2. The Cardinals are laying 3.5 points after dropping their conference home game against Wake Forest, while NC State returns to Carter-Finley after beating Appalachian State 41-31.
The current number looks considerably different from the opener. Louisville was initially favored by roughly a touchdown before the market moved aggressively toward the Wolfpack, creating a home-underdog spot above the key number of three.
Louisville vs. NC State Recent Results
Louisville Cardinals (2-2), (1-1 ACC)
Louisville suffered a frustrating 30-27 home loss to Wake Forest after entering the week with momentum from a 41-31 victory over SMU. The Cardinals failed to score in the fourth quarter and dropped their second game of the season by exactly three points.
Lincoln Kienholz still produced strong individual numbers, completing 27 of 36 passes for 324 yards and a touchdown while rushing for two more scores. Jaleel Skinner provided the biggest explosive play with a 61-yard touchdown reception late in the first half.
The problems came elsewhere. Louisville managed only 75 rushing yards, committed 90 yards worth of penalties and allowed Wake Forest to produce 402 total yards. The Cardinals also surrendered a 77-yard touchdown and repeatedly undermined otherwise productive possessions with mistakes.
Jeff Brohm's offense remains dangerous, but the margin for error has disappeared. Louisville lost 41-38 to Ole Miss and 30-27 to Wake Forest, meaning both defeats have come by a field goal despite the offense showing plenty of scoring ability.
NC State Wolfpack (2-2), (0-1 ACC)
NC State responded to its devastating Vanderbilt loss with a 41-31 home victory over Appalachian State. The Wolfpack led by 21 in the first half before allowing App State to tie the game at 31, then recovered with the final 10 points.
CJ Bailey completed 24 of 33 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. His ability to attack through the air gave NC State enough offense to respond after the second-half momentum swung sharply toward the Mountaineers.
Duke Scott provided the larger breakthrough with 148 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Keenan Jackson added four receptions for 64 yards and a score, continuing a strong stretch in which he has become Bailey's most productive downfield target.
The defensive performance remains a concern after allowing 31 to Appalachian State and 35 to Vanderbilt. Still, NC State has shown considerably more offensive balance over the last three games than it did in the season-opening 34-8 loss at Virginia.
Louisville vs. NC State Head to Head
Louisville leads the all-time series 9-4 and has won each of the last two meetings. The recent games have generally been lower scoring, with neither team reaching 30 points in the last three matchups.
- September 29, 2023: Louisville 13, NC State 10
- November 19, 2022: Louisville 25, NC State 10
- October 30, 2021: NC State 28, Louisville 13
- November 16, 2019: Louisville 34, NC State 20
The 2023 meeting was exactly the type of one-possession game that makes +3.5 important. Louisville escaped Raleigh by a field goal despite scoring only 13 points.
The personnel has changed considerably since then, particularly at quarterback, but Carter-Finley remains a difficult road environment. NC State has consistently played its best football at home and enters Saturday looking to reverse a two-game losing streak in the series.

Louisville vs. NC State Line Movement and Betting Splits
Louisville opened around -7.5 before the market moved all the way down to -3.5. Crossing through seven and approaching the key number of three represents one of the more significant adjustments on Saturday's ACC board.
That movement is particularly notable because DraftKings betting splits are overwhelmingly backing Louisville at the current price. The Cardinals are receiving roughly 94% of spread tickets and essentially all of the reported handle, yet the market is still offering NC State +3.5 after opening around a touchdown.
The total has also slipped from an opening range around 59.5 to 58.5. The more important number for this wager remains the spread, where getting the hook above three creates valuable protection in a matchup featuring two teams that have already played multiple one-possession games.
Louisville vs. NC State Prediction
NC State's home field is the first major reason to take the points. Carter-Finley is sold out again, extending the program's home sellout streak to 30 games. The Wolfpack have also been dramatically more reliable in Raleigh than away from home over the last several seasons.
The offense gives NC State enough firepower to take advantage of that setting. Bailey has thrown for 893 yards through four games, while Scott provides the balance Louisville lacked last week. The Wolfpack do not have to become one-dimensional and ask Bailey to throw 40-plus times simply to keep pace.
Scott's emergence is particularly important after Wake Forest rushed for 177 yards against Louisville. The Cardinals held themselves to only 75 rushing yards on offense, creating a game where they had to depend heavily on Kienholz despite controlling possession for more than 33 minutes.
Kienholz is still the biggest challenge for NC State. He threw for 324 yards against Wake Forest and has enough mobility to create problems when the pocket breaks down. NC State's defense has already allowed 35 to Vanderbilt and 31 to App State, so expecting the Wolfpack to simply shut Louisville down would be unrealistic.
The better case for +3.5 is that NC State can trade scores. Bailey, Scott and Jackson give the Wolfpack three different ways to move the football, and Louisville has allowed at least 30 points in three of its four games. A competitive game in the upper 20s or low 30s strongly favors taking more than a field goal with the home team.
Louisville's recent sloppiness also matters. The Cardinals committed 90 penalty yards against Wake Forest, allowed multiple explosive plays and failed to generate a fourth-quarter point. Brohm has already acknowledged that the mistakes have been recurring rather than isolated to one bad afternoon.
The market has already reduced Louisville's advantage from roughly a touchdown to 3.5, but the key number keeps the Wolfpack attractive. NC State can lose 31-28 and still cash, while the offensive balance and home environment also create a legitimate path to an outright win.
Louisville vs. NC State Best Bet
- Best Bet: NC State +3.5 (-105) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
Getting the hook above three is the central piece of the wager. Both Louisville losses have come by exactly three points, the last meeting in Raleigh was decided by three and NC State has enough offensive firepower to keep this inside one possession.
Louisville remains dangerous behind Kienholz, but its inability to establish the run and its recurring mistakes make laying more than a field goal difficult on the road. Bailey and Scott give NC State a strong chance to control stretches of the game and keep Carter-Finley involved into the fourth quarter.
