5 Minute ReadMichigan vs. Minnesota Prediction: Can Bryce Underwood, Wolverines Bounce Back in Road Test Against Surging Golden Gophers?
Michigan hits the road for the first time this season when it visits Minnesota at Huntington Bank Stadium for a noon ET kickoff on FOX. Both teams enter at 3-1, with Michigan trying to recover from a crushing 20-19 loss to Iowa while Minnesota returns home after beating Washington 27-24.
The market has reacted aggressively to those results. Michigan opened as high as an 8.5-point road favorite but has fallen all the way to -5.5, while a low total of 43.5 points suggests another game where every possession and field goal could matter.
Michigan vs. Minnesota Recent Results
Michigan Wolverines (3-1), (0-1 Big Ten)
Michigan's undefeated start ended in painful fashion against Iowa. The Wolverines held a 19-14 lead late in the fourth quarter before Iowa drove the field and scored the decisive touchdown at the end of the game for a 20-19 victory.
The final result was ugly, but the underlying offensive performance was more complicated. Michigan outgained Iowa 429-285 and produced six passing plays of at least 20 yards after struggling to generate explosives during its first three games.
The Wolverines simply failed to convert enough of that production into points. Two red-zone turnovers proved costly, leaving Michigan with only 19 points despite moving the ball significantly better than it had in narrow early-season wins over Western Michigan and Oklahoma.
Michigan's defense remains the strength of the roster. The Wolverines are allowing only 236.3 total yards and 14.8 points per game while holding opponents below 90 rushing yards per contest.
Minnesota Golden Gophers (3-1), (1-0 Big Ten)
Minnesota opened Big Ten play with an impressive 27-24 road victory at Washington. The Golden Gophers built a 21-10 halftime advantage and survived Washington's late comeback attempt to leave Seattle with their biggest win of the season.
Drake Lindsey threw for 204 yards and helped Minnesota control the first half, while the Gophers finished with a 36:01 to 23:59 advantage in time of possession. Minnesota also held Washington to only 40 rushing yards and a 1-for-10 conversion rate on third down.
Lindsey has now thrown for 951 yards through four games with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. The passing game has been much more stable than Minnesota's rushing production, while Javon Tracy provides another major field-position weapon in the return game.
The one major concern remains the 38-13 home loss to Mississippi State. Minnesota was overwhelmed physically in that matchup, so the Gophers have already shown they can struggle when an opponent wins decisively at the line of scrimmage.
Michigan vs. Minnesota Head to Head
Michigan leads the all-time series 78-25-3 and owns a 74-23-2 advantage in games played for the Little Brown Jug. The Wolverines have won five straight meetings.
- September 28, 2024: Michigan 27, Minnesota 24
- October 7, 2023: Michigan 52, Minnesota 10
- October 24, 2020: Michigan 49, Minnesota 24
- November 4, 2017: Michigan 33, Minnesota 10
The 2024 game provides a useful reminder of how competitive this rivalry can become even when Michigan enters with the stronger roster. Minnesota stayed within a field goal in Ann Arbor, which is particularly relevant with Saturday's spread sitting at 5.5.
Michigan's historical dominance is significant, but the current Wolverines have yet to play a road game this season and are entering Minneapolis immediately after an emotionally damaging conference loss.

Michigan vs. Minnesota Line Movement and Betting Splits
Michigan opened as high as an 8.5-point favorite before falling to -5.5, a full three-point adjustment toward Minnesota. The total has also slipped from around 44.5 to 43.5, reinforcing expectations for a lower-possession game.
DraftKings spread betting tells an interesting story. Michigan has 68% of the tickets but only 43% of the handle, while Minnesota has attracted 57% of the money on just 32% of the bets. The average spread wager is therefore considerably larger on the Golden Gophers.
Michigan remains overwhelmingly popular on the moneyline, which creates a clear contrast between bettors simply expecting the Wolverines to win and those willing to take the points with Minnesota.
Michigan vs. Minnesota Prediction
Michigan's defense is the strongest unit in this matchup, and that makes Minnesota's task difficult. The Wolverines are allowing only 236.3 yards per game and have been particularly strong against the run. Minnesota cannot expect to control this game simply by handing the ball off and shortening possessions.
Lindsey gives the Gophers another path. He has been efficient through four games and already handled a difficult road environment at Washington. Minnesota does not need him to generate 350 yards Saturday, but it does need consistent completions that prevent Michigan's pass rush from taking over obvious third-and-long situations.
The larger question is whether Michigan's offense can create margin. The Wolverines gained 429 yards against Iowa, so the 19-point final should not be interpreted as complete offensive failure. The problem was finishing drives, which has been a recurring concern outside of the 52-point eruption against UTEP.
Michigan has scored 13, 17, 52 and 19 points through four games. With the total sitting at only 43.5, asking the Wolverines to win by six requires meaningful offensive separation in a game the market expects to stay relatively compressed.
That low total makes +5.5 particularly valuable. Fewer expected points generally mean fewer possessions and fewer opportunities for a favorite to build margin. If this game spends most of the afternoon around 10-7, 14-10 or 17-13, Minnesota remains positioned to cover even if Michigan ultimately finds a way to win.
Home field also matters more here because Michigan has not played away from Ann Arbor yet. Minnesota just went across the country and won at Washington, held the Huskies to 40 rushing yards and controlled possession for more than 36 minutes. That experience is more relevant than simply comparing the teams' raw records.
Michigan can absolutely dominate defensively, but Minnesota does not need to score 30. The Gophers need Lindsey to avoid turnovers, the defense to force Michigan to settle for field goals and special teams to protect field position. That creates a realistic path to a game that remains within one possession throughout the fourth quarter.
Michigan vs. Minnesota Best Bet
- Best Bet: Minnesota +5.5 (-108) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
The move from an 8.5-point opener to +5.5 has removed some of the early value, but the combination of home field and a 43.5-point total still favors taking nearly a touchdown with Minnesota.
Michigan remains capable of winning behind its defense, but the offense has not consistently shown it can create enough separation to comfortably cover this number. Minnesota's win at Washington, Lindsey's steady quarterback play and the larger average spread wagers landing on the Gophers make +5.5 the preferred side.
