5 Minute ReadOhio State vs. Iowa Prediction: Can Hawkeyes Keep Up with Buckeyes After Stunning Wolverines Last Week?
Ohio State heads into one of the most difficult environments on its schedule for a 3:30 PM ET matchup with Iowa on CBS. The Buckeyes are 3-1 and 1-0 in Big Ten play after handling Illinois, while Iowa is 4-0 and 1-0 following a dramatic road victory over Michigan.
Ohio State is favored by 14.5 points despite Iowa's undefeated start, but the more interesting number is the total of 46. The Hawkeyes have built their season around an elite defense, field position and special teams, creating a matchup where Ohio State's explosive offense may have to earn nearly every scoring opportunity.
Ohio State vs. Iowa Recent Results
Ohio State Buckeyes (3-1), (1-0 Big Ten)
Ohio State opened conference play with a 42-19 victory over Illinois, producing 518 total yards while building a 28-10 halftime advantage. Julian Sayin completed 27 of 36 passes for 367 yards and four touchdowns while adding another score on the ground.
Jeremiah Smith completely took over the matchup with 12 receptions for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Smith now has 617 receiving yards through four games and remains the most dangerous individual matchup Iowa has faced this season.
The Buckeyes have scored 56, 23, 59 and 42 points, with the lone loss coming 24-23 at Texas. The defense has allowed only 49 total points, including three apiece against Ball State and Kent State, giving Ohio State the ability to win even when the offense is not operating at its highest level.
Iowa Hawkeyes (4-0), (1-0 Big Ten)
Iowa delivered one of the biggest wins of Week 4 by beating Michigan 20-19 in Ann Arbor. The Hawkeyes took possession at their own 9-yard line with 1:46 remaining and drove 91 yards before Hank Brown found Reece Vander Zee for a 16-yard touchdown on the final play.
Brown completed 21 of 35 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns, with both scores coming in the fourth quarter. Iowa only generated 285 total yards compared with Michigan's 429, but the Hawkeyes again found ways to win through defense, situational football and special teams.
Braeden Jackson's 99-yard kickoff return provided Iowa's other touchdown. The defense remains the foundation, allowing just 8.0 points and 239.8 total yards per game while posting two shutouts through four weeks.
Iowa has surrendered only three offensive touchdowns all season. That defense now faces a significant increase in difficulty against Sayin and Smith, but the Hawkeyes have shown enough discipline to make opponents sustain long drives rather than consistently creating easy explosive plays.
Ohio State vs. Iowa Head to Head
Ohio State leads the all-time series 48-15-3 and has won two straight meetings since Iowa's memorable upset in 2017. Saturday will be Ohio State's first trip to Kinnick Stadium since that loss.
- October 5, 2024: Ohio State 35, Iowa 7
- October 22, 2022: Ohio State 54, Iowa 10
- November 4, 2017: Iowa 55, Ohio State 24
- October 19, 2013: Ohio State 34, Iowa 24
The 2024 matchup was completely controlled by Ohio State after halftime. The Buckeyes finished with more than 400 total yards while their defense forced three turnovers and held Iowa to one touchdown.
This Iowa team enters with a much more stable quarterback situation and considerably more confidence after winning at Michigan. The 2017 result also serves as a reminder that Kinnick can create a very different game environment when Ohio State visits as a major favorite.

Ohio State vs. Iowa Line Movement and Betting Splits
The total opened around 44.5 before climbing through 45.5 and reaching 46 at the current book. Ohio State has remained around a two-touchdown favorite, with most of the broader market sitting between -14 and -14.5.
The DraftKings total splits are particularly unusual. At 45.5, the Over has attracted roughly 91% of the individual tickets, but the Under is receiving approximately 96% of the handle despite accounting for only 9% of bets. The average wager on the Under is therefore dramatically larger.
That creates an interesting contrast with the upward movement in the total. The current 46 provides additional breathing room compared with the opener while still requiring Iowa to contribute meaningful offense if Ohio State does not reach the mid-30s.
Ohio State vs. Iowa Prediction
Iowa's defense gives the Under a legitimate foundation. The Hawkeyes are allowing only eight points per game, rank among the national leaders in total defense and have held two opponents scoreless. Ohio State is clearly the strongest offense on the schedule, but simply reaching its normal scoring average will require Iowa to perform much worse than it has through four games.
Smith is the biggest concern. He can turn one missed assignment into seven points and just dismantled Illinois for 217 yards and four touchdowns. Iowa cannot completely erase him, but its secondary has consistently limited explosive passing and forced quarterbacks to work underneath rather than repeatedly creating quick scores.
Ohio State's own defense may be even more important for the total. Iowa produced only 285 yards at Michigan and needed a kickoff-return touchdown to reach 20 points. Brown was excellent late, but asking this offense to repeatedly sustain drives against Ohio State is considerably different from asking it to make two clutch fourth-quarter possessions.
That creates a game where Iowa's best offensive strategy may also help the Under. The Hawkeyes can lean on the running game, play field position and avoid giving Sayin additional possessions. Kirk Ferentz has little incentive to accelerate the game unless Ohio State creates early separation.
The spread and total also work together. A 14.5-point favorite with a total of 46 implies a game where Iowa is already expected to score somewhere in the mid-teens. If the Hawkeyes instead finish around 10 to 13 points, Ohio State could still win comfortably without pushing the game Over.
Special teams and turnovers are the primary dangers. Iowa already has both a punt-return and kickoff-return touchdown this season, while Ohio State possesses enough offensive talent to capitalize immediately on short fields. A defensive score or return touchdown can break an Under even when neither offense is consistently moving the ball.
The cleaner expectation is Ohio State eventually creating separation without turning Kinnick into a track meet. Iowa's defense should force enough long possessions to keep the Buckeyes below their recent 40-point range, while the Hawkeyes offense faces an uphill battle reaching 20.
Ohio State vs. Iowa Best Bet
- Best Bet: Under 46 (-110) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
Ohio State has the firepower to threaten this number by itself, but Iowa has allowed only 32 points across four games and has the defensive structure to slow the pace of the matchup. On the other side, the Hawkeyes have not shown the offensive explosiveness needed to confidently project a significant contribution against the Buckeyes.
The move from 44.5 to 46 creates a better entry point for the Under, while the DraftKings handle distribution is heavily concentrated on the lower-scoring side despite very few individual bets. A 27-13 or 30-13 type of result fits the matchup and keeps the game below the current total.
