Texas Tech Helmets White

Texas Tech vs. Colorado Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Saturday, October 3rd

The Texas Tech Red Raiders take their undefeated record to Boulder for a Big 12 road matchup against the Colorado Buffaloes. Can Will Hammond and Texas Tech create enough offense to control the game while Colorado attempts to reverse two straight subpar scoring performances? Check out this Texas Tech vs. Colorado prediction and best bet for Saturday, October 3.

Texas Tech vs. Colorado Prediction: Can Deion Sanders' Squad Compete with High-Powered Red Raiders on Saturday Night?

Texas Tech makes its first Big 12 road trip of the season when it visits Folsom Field for a 7:30 PM ET kickoff on FOX. The Red Raiders are 4-0 and favored by 12.5 points, while Colorado returns home at 2-2 after scoring only 20 combined points in consecutive losses to Northwestern and Baylor.

The total of 50.5 creates the more attractive market. Texas Tech has enough offense to reach the 30s, but Colorado’s recent scoring problems and the strength of the Red Raiders defense create a game script where one team may have to carry almost the entire total.

Texas Tech vs. Colorado Recent Results

Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-0), (1-0 Big 12)

Texas Tech handled Sam Houston 49-14 last Saturday to remain perfect. The Red Raiders generated 470 total yards, including 219 on the ground, while holding the Bearkats to 269 yards and only 74 rushing.

Will Hammond threw for 224 yards and added a 23-yard rushing touchdown. Cameron Dickey led the rushing attack with 91 yards and two scores, allowing Texas Tech to remain productive despite Hammond throwing three interceptions.

The defense also directly changed the scoreboard. Austin Romaine returned interceptions for touchdowns on consecutive Sam Houston pass attempts, turning a competitive stretch into another comfortable victory.

Those defensive scores highlight both sides of the Under argument this week. Texas Tech can suffocate a struggling offense, but a pick-six or repeated short fields can inflate the total even without Colorado generating much legitimate offense.

Colorado Buffaloes (2-2), (0-1 Big 12)

Colorado’s offensive momentum has disappeared since a 52-21 win over Weber State. The Buffaloes were beaten 41-7 at Northwestern and then managed only 13 points in a 23-13 loss at Baylor.

That means Colorado has scored only 20 points over its last eight quarters. Against FBS opponents this season, the Buffaloes have produced 14 points at Georgia Tech, seven at Northwestern and 13 at Baylor.

The offense has struggled to consistently generate rushing production or explosive passing plays when facing stronger defensive fronts. Colorado has been able to stay competitive when its defense keeps the score low, as it did at Georgia Tech and Baylor, but it has shown very little ability to chase once a game moves beyond the low 20s.

That becomes a major issue against a Texas Tech defense that has created turnovers and consistently controlled opposing rushing attacks.

Texas Tech vs. Colorado Head to Head

Colorado leads the all-time series 6-5 and won the most recent meeting in Lubbock. Texas Tech now visits Boulder for the first time since 2010.

  • November 9, 2024: Colorado 41, Texas Tech 27
  • October 23, 2010: Texas Tech 27, Colorado 24
  • October 27, 2007: Colorado 31, Texas Tech 26
  • October 14, 2006: Colorado 30, Texas Tech 6

The 2024 meeting featured completely different offensive personnel for Colorado, making that result much less useful for Saturday’s scoring projection. The current Buffaloes have not shown anything close to that version’s ability to generate points against quality FBS opposition.

Texas Tech also enters with a stronger defensive identity than many previous Red Raiders teams. That changes a matchup historically associated with more offense than the current 50.5 total suggests.

Texas Tech vs. Colorado Line Movement and Betting Splits

Texas Tech opened closer to a 15.5-point road favorite before the spread moved down toward -12.5. The total has been much steadier around 50.5, making the scoring market more interesting than the side.

DraftKings betting has leaned overwhelmingly toward the Over, with more than 90% of total tickets and nearly all of the reported handle backing a higher-scoring game. That creates a clear contrast with an Under handicap built almost entirely around Colorado’s limited offensive contribution.

Texas Tech has also received heavy support on the spread. Bettors clearly expect the Red Raiders to control the matchup, but a dominant Texas Tech victory can still finish below 50.5 if Colorado remains around 10 to 14 points.

Texas Tech vs. Colorado Prediction

The Under begins with a simple question: how many points can Colorado realistically contribute? Against its three FBS opponents, Colorado has scored 14, seven and 13. Even reaching 17 on Saturday would represent its best offensive output against an FBS defense this season.

Texas Tech is not the opponent to expect that breakthrough against. The Red Raiders just held Sam Houston to 269 total yards and 74 rushing, and the defense has consistently created negative plays and takeaways. Colorado cannot rely on methodical drives if it keeps falling behind the chains.

The altitude and home environment give the Buffaloes some advantages, but those factors matter much more if Colorado can establish its running game. If Texas Tech controls early downs, the Buffs will again be forced into a pass-heavy script that has not produced enough explosives.

Texas Tech does not necessarily need to score 40. Hammond threw three interceptions last week, which is a reminder that this offense can waste possessions even while moving the ball effectively. On the road, a more conservative approach built around the running game would also drain clock and help the Under.

The main danger is Texas Tech’s defense creating points. Romaine scored twice last week, and short fields can turn a low-output opposing offense into an Over through no offensive contribution of its own. Colorado has to protect the football for the Under to remain comfortable.

Another risk is the favorite simply exploding. Texas Tech has scored 28 or more in all four games and just reached 49. A 42-10 result loses the Under despite Colorado barely contributing, so the wager still requires the Red Raiders to remain somewhere closer to the low-to-mid 30s.

That remains a reasonable expectation in the first conference road game. A 34-10, 35-13 or 31-14 type of result fits both teams’ profiles. Texas Tech can dominate the game, cover the spread and never seriously threaten the Over if Colorado’s offensive struggles continue.

Texas Tech vs. Colorado Best Bet

Colorado has scored only 20 points across its last two games and has yet to surpass 14 against an FBS opponent. Asking the Buffaloes to suddenly make a major offensive contribution against one of the stronger defenses on their schedule is difficult.

Texas Tech can still win comfortably without turning this into a shootout. If the Red Raiders settle into a run-heavy second half after creating separation, Colorado’s scoring ceiling should keep the game below 50.5 despite overwhelming public support for the Over.
