5 Minute ReadSouthern Miss vs. Troy Prediction: Can Southern Miss Keep it Close with Troy as Double-Digit Road Underdog on Tuesday Night?
Southern Miss and Troy open Sun Belt play Tuesday night in a nationally televised matchup at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:00 PM ET on ESPN2, with Troy favored by 10 points and the total sitting at 52.
The records favor the Trojans, but both teams enter searching for a response. Southern Miss has lost three straight since opening with a blowout win over Alcorn State, while Troy has dropped consecutive road games to Missouri and Utah State after beginning 2-0. The Golden Eagles showed meaningful offensive improvement in their most recent loss, creating an interesting double-digit underdog spot.
Southern Miss vs. Troy Recent Results
Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-3), (0-0 Sun Belt)
Southern Miss came painfully close to its first FBS victory of the season in a 24-21 loss at Tulane. The Golden Eagles led 21-14 early in the second half before Tulane scored the final 10 points, including the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Landry Lyddy provided the most encouraging quarterback performance Southern Miss has received this season. He completed 18 of 29 passes for 243 yards and three touchdowns, connecting twice with Mario Sanders and once with Davis Dalton while avoiding the damaging mistakes that had hurt the offense earlier in the year.
Southern Miss finished with 401 total yards and showed considerably better offensive balance than it did in losses to Auburn and UConn. Steven Robinson added 73 rushing yards, while AJ Little led the receiving group with 75 yards.
The overall defense remains a concern after allowing 428.5 yards per game through four contests, particularly against the run. Still, the Tulane performance was the first real indication that Southern Miss can sustain offense long enough to remain competitive against a quality FBS opponent.
Troy Trojans (2-2), (0-0 Sun Belt)
Troy enters conference play on a two-game losing streak after falling 21-10 at Utah State. The Trojans led 10-7 at halftime but were shut out after the break while committing two turnovers and missing two field goals.
Goose Crowder threw for 226 yards but again struggled with efficiency. He has completed only 52.3% of his passes through four games while throwing for 822 yards, seven touchdowns and four interceptions.
The Troy offense is averaging only 21.3 points and 371.8 total yards per game. The rushing attack has been more reliable at 166.2 yards per contest, but the Trojans have scored only 27 combined points across their last two games.
The defense has kept Troy competitive. Opponents are averaging only 309.2 total yards, including 111.8 rushing yards, and both Missouri and Utah State were held to fewer than 30 points.
Southern Miss vs. Troy Head to Head
Southern Miss owns an 8-7 advantage in the all-time series, but Troy has completely controlled the recent meetings. The Trojans have won five consecutive games against the Golden Eagles entering Tuesday.
- November 29, 2025: Troy 28, Southern Miss 18
- November 30, 2024: Troy 52, Southern Miss 20
- November 25, 2023: Troy 35, Southern Miss 17
- October 8, 2022: Troy 27, Southern Miss 10
- September 18, 2021: Troy 21, Southern Miss 9
Last season's meeting was considerably more competitive than several of the previous results. Southern Miss cut Troy's lead to 21-18 with 3:27 remaining before Crowder immediately answered with a 75-yard touchdown pass that produced the final 28-18 margin.
Crowder threw for 285 yards and three touchdowns in that matchup, giving Troy important quarterback continuity in the series. Southern Miss has changed significantly since then, however, and Lyddy's recent emergence gives the Golden Eagles a different offensive profile entering this meeting.

Southern Miss vs. Troy Line Movement and Betting Splits
Troy opened closer to an 8.5-point favorite before the market pushed the Trojans toward double digits. The current line has reached exactly -10, while some broader markets have even moved beyond that key number.
The betting distribution creates an interesting contrast with that move. DraftKings betting splits show Southern Miss receiving only 22% of spread tickets but 60% of the handle at +10. The Golden Eagles are therefore attracting a substantially larger average wager despite Troy drawing nearly four out of every five individual bets.
The moneyline tells a similar story. Troy is overwhelmingly more popular by ticket count, but Southern Miss has attracted a much larger share of the money than its small number of individual wagers would suggest.
Southern Miss vs. Troy Prediction
Southern Miss' 1-3 record makes this look more lopsided than the most recent football suggests. The losses to Auburn and UConn were ugly, but the Golden Eagles were one late Tulane drive away from entering Sun Belt play after a significant road upset. Producing 401 yards and three passing touchdowns in New Orleans was a legitimate step forward.
Lyddy is the biggest reason to believe that improvement can carry over. Southern Miss had rotated quarterback production earlier in the season, but his 243-yard, three-touchdown performance provided the offense with its cleanest combination of efficiency and explosiveness. A quarterback capable of finishing drives makes catching double digits considerably more attractive.
Troy's offense has not demonstrated the consistency normally associated with a 10-point favorite. The Trojans have scored 17 points against Missouri and 10 against Utah State over their last two games, with Crowder completing barely half of his passes for the season. That makes creating repeated two-score separation more difficult.
The Troy rushing game is the biggest concern for Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles are allowing 235.2 rushing yards per game, and Troy has averaged more than 166. If Gavin Griffin and the Trojans consistently reach the second level, Troy can shorten the game while gradually creating margin.
That same slower script can also work in Southern Miss' favor against the spread. Troy controlling the ball on the ground reduces total possessions, leaving fewer opportunities to turn a modest advantage into a three-score lead. A 24-17 or 27-20 type of game keeps the Golden Eagles comfortably inside this number.
Southern Miss also has enough passing production to threaten a backdoor cover if Troy does build separation. The Golden Eagles average 241.5 passing yards per game and have multiple receivers capable of generating explosive plays. Catching exactly 10 means even a late touchdown can dramatically change the betting result.
The recent series favors Troy, but even last year's game landed on exactly a 10-point margin after Southern Miss pulled within three late. With Troy's offense currently producing fewer explosive scoring drives and Southern Miss coming off its best quarterback performance of the season, asking the Trojans to win by more than 10 looks aggressive.
Southern Miss vs. Troy Best Bet
- Best Bet: Southern Miss +10 (-107) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
The key number is important. Southern Miss can lose by exactly 10 and still produce a push, while Troy needs to create at least 11 points of separation despite averaging only 21.3 points per game.
Southern Miss' defense creates risk, particularly against Troy's rushing attack, but Lyddy's emergence gives the Golden Eagles a much stronger chance to answer scores than they showed earlier in the season. With 60% of the spread handle landing on Southern Miss despite only 22% of the tickets, the larger average wagers are also supporting the double-digit underdog.
