5 Minute ReadSouth Florida vs. UTSA Prediction: Can South Florida Play Close with Roadrunners on Thursday Night?
South Florida and UTSA meet at the Alamodome in a 7:30 PM ET Thursday night game on ESPN. Both teams enter at 4-1, with USF sitting 1-1 in American Conference play and UTSA at 1-0.
UTSA is currently favored by 6.5 points with the total at 50, but the selected wager buys South Florida to +7 at -125. FairPlay AI makes UTSA only -3.5, creating roughly three points of disagreement with the actual market and providing the strongest model-based case of these four Thursday selections.
South Florida vs. UTSA Recent Results
South Florida Bulls (4-1), (1-1 American)
South Florida suffered its first loss of the season last Saturday when Temple scored late to win 17-13 in Tampa. The Bulls led 13-10 in the fourth quarter before allowing a 96-yard touchdown drive that ended with the decisive score.
Michael Van Buren Jr. threw for 205 yards, while D.J. Crowther was limited to 68 rushing yards on 23 carries. Temple consistently crowded the running lanes, with 14 of Crowther’s attempts producing three yards or fewer.
The offense was also damaged by penalties and missing personnel. USF played without six starters, including multiple offensive linemen, defensive starters and a receiver.
The defense still gave the Bulls every chance to win. Temple produced only 17 points, and USF enters San Antonio with one of the stronger defensive profiles in the American.
UTSA Roadrunners (4-1), (1-0 American)
UTSA opened conference play with a 16-14 road victory over Rice. The Roadrunners held the Owls to 232 total yards and only 88 passing yards, using defense and the running game to survive an unusually low-scoring performance.
The defensive front produced a season-high 10 tackles for loss and three sacks. That performance continued UTSA’s improvement on that side of the ball after earlier games produced significantly more scoring.
The offense remains less consistent. UTSA has flashed major explosiveness, including 59 points against Colorado State, but struggled with drops, turnovers and offensive-line issues against Rice.
Owen McCown remains the centerpiece of the passing game, while Will Henderson III gives the Roadrunners a legitimate rushing threat. The question is whether that offense can create enough margin against a Bulls defense that has generally kept opponents from scoring quickly.
South Florida vs. UTSA Head to Head
The series is tied 1-1, with the home team winning both meetings.
- November 6, 2025: South Florida 55, UTSA 23
- November 17, 2023: UTSA 49, South Florida 21
Neither previous game was competitive, with each home team winning by at least 28 points.
The 2025 result gives South Florida recent confidence against UTSA, but Thursday’s game takes place at the Alamodome, where Jeff Traylor has built one of the strongest home-field records outside the Power Four.

South Florida vs. UTSA Line Movement and Betting Splits
UTSA has moved from roughly -3.5 earlier in the market to -6.5 at the current book, with other books already reaching the key number of seven. That is a substantial move toward the Roadrunners.
DraftKings splits at +7 have been relatively balanced compared with the other Thursday games. UTSA has attracted slightly more than half of the spread tickets and roughly 58% of the handle.
The moneyline tells a more interesting story. UTSA has drawn close to 90% of individual bets, yet South Florida has attracted nearly half of the money despite receiving only a small minority of tickets. The average wager on the Bulls moneyline is substantially larger.
South Florida vs. UTSA Prediction
The FairPlay AI projection is the first major reason to take the points. UTSA is priced around -6.5 to -7 in the actual market, but FairPlay AI has the Roadrunners closer to -3.5. That is roughly a three-point difference, and buying South Florida to the full +7 gives additional protection at one of football’s most important numbers.
USF’s loss to Temple should not automatically trigger a major downgrade. The Bulls were missing six starters, still allowed only 17 points and were one late defensive stop away from remaining undefeated. The performance was poor offensively, but the underlying defensive structure remained intact.
That defense is particularly important because UTSA is not operating at peak offensive efficiency. The Roadrunners scored only 16 at Rice and have dealt with offensive-line injuries, drops and turnovers. Asking that offense to create more than a touchdown of separation against a strong USF defense is considerably different from simply asking UTSA to win.
Crowther should also have an opportunity to rebound. Temple completely bottled him up, but he entered that matchup with consecutive 100-yard performances. If USF can establish even an average rushing attack, Van Buren can operate without facing obvious passing downs throughout the night.
The Alamodome is the strongest argument against the wager. UTSA has been dominant at home under Traylor, including a 23-1 record against conference opponents entering this matchup. South Florida will have to overcome one of the best home environments in the American.
There is also a short-week challenge for both teams, though UTSA played Saturday night in Houston while South Florida played at home in Tampa. Neither team gets a meaningful rest advantage, making depth and injury recovery more important.
The number ultimately creates the edge. USF can lose 24-20, 27-23 or even 24-17 and either cover or push at +7. With FairPlay AI indicating this matchup is closer to a field goal than a touchdown and the Bulls carrying the stronger defensive profile, taking the full touchdown is the better side.
South Florida vs. UTSA Best Bet
- Best Bet: South Florida +7 (-125) Check out these best odds at BetMGM Sportsbook
The extra juice is justified to move from +6.5 through the key number of seven. FairPlay AI has UTSA closer to -3.5, creating approximately three points of value compared with the current market before accounting for the added protection.
UTSA’s Alamodome dominance deserves respect, but its offense has been inconsistent and USF just held Temple to 17 despite missing several starters. If the Bulls regain even moderate offensive efficiency, their defense should give them a strong chance to stay within one possession for four quarters.
