Washington returns to Husky Stadium for a 9:00 PM ET matchup against Iowa on FOX or FS1. The Huskies are 3-2 overall but 0-2 in Big Ten play after consecutive close losses to Minnesota and USC, while Iowa enters 4-1 and 1-1 after falling 31-14 against Ohio State.
The quarterback situation changes the matchup considerably. Iowa is expected to start Jeremy Hecklinski in place of Hank Brown, who suffered a shoulder injury against Ohio State, while Washington gets another opportunity at home behind the dual-threat ability of Williams.
Iowa vs. Washington Recent Results
Iowa Hawkeyes (4-1), (1-1 Big Ten)
Iowa suffered its first loss of the season when Ohio State pulled away for a 31-14 victory at Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes kept the game relatively competitive early but struggled to create enough sustained offense against the Buckeyes.
Brown's shoulder injury became the biggest development. Hecklinski is expected to make his first collegiate start after completing all five of his passes for 67 yards in relief against Ohio State.
Iowa's defense remains excellent. The Hawkeyes are allowing 12.6 points and 288.6 total yards per game and have already recorded two shutouts, including a 40-0 win over Northern Illinois and 55-0 victory over Northern Iowa.
The offensive numbers are more misleading. Iowa averages 180.2 rushing yards per game overall, but the ground game has been significantly less effective against Power Four competition. That increases the pressure on an inexperienced starting quarterback Friday night.
Washington Huskies (3-2), (0-2 Big Ten)
Washington has lost consecutive conference games by a combined seven points. The Huskies fell 27-24 at home to Minnesota before losing 25-21 at USC last week.
That USC result was encouraging despite the loss. Washington entered its first road game of the season as a 9.5-point underdog and remained within one possession against one of the conference's more explosive offenses.
Williams continues to provide the offense with both passing and rushing ability. He enters Friday with more than 1,300 passing yards and eight touchdowns while remaining dangerous outside the pocket.
Washington's biggest issue has been finishing. The Huskies have been competitive in both Big Ten losses but have not made enough plays in the final minutes to convert those performances into conference wins.
Iowa vs. Washington Head to Head
Iowa and Washington have met only a handful of times, with Friday marking the Hawkeyes' first trip to Seattle in 63 years.
- September 28, 1963: Iowa 17, Washington 7
- January 1, 1991: Washington 46, Iowa 34
- January 1, 1982: Washington 28, Iowa 0
The series carries little direct handicapping value because the programs have not met in the modern era.
The travel angle is more relevant. Iowa is making a rare trip to the Pacific Northwest, while Washington returns home after playing its first road game of the season in Los Angeles.

Iowa vs. Washington Line Movement and Betting Splits
Washington has spent much of the week between -2.5 and -3, with the current displayed market sitting at -3. The total has fallen into the low 40s as expectations for Iowa's offense have weakened following the quarterback injury.
The preferred alternate number is Washington -2.5 (-115), keeping the wager below the key number of three. That half-point matters significantly in a matchup with a total of only 41.5.
Iowa vs. Washington Prediction
FairPlay AI does not support Washington as strongly as some of the other Friday positions. The projection has Iowa around -0.5 on a neutralized matchup basis while the sportsbook makes Washington the favorite, so there is no model edge to manufacture here. This wager is driven instead by quarterback circumstances, location and the value of staying below three.
Hecklinski making his first collegiate start at Husky Stadium is the central matchup issue. Iowa already struggles to generate explosive passing offense, and now the Hawkeyes are asking a new quarterback to operate on the road in one of the louder environments in the conference.
Washington can attack that situation by forcing Iowa into longer third downs. The Hawkeyes have run the ball effectively against lesser opponents, but the ground game has averaged only 2.6 yards per carry against Power Four competition. If that continues, Hecklinski will have to consistently convert obvious passing situations.
Iowa's defense prevents this from becoming an easy favorite play. The Hawkeyes allow only 12.6 points per game and are excellent in the red zone, so Washington may have to string together long possessions rather than relying on explosives.
Williams gives the Huskies a valuable counter to that structure because he can create outside the designed play. Quarterback mobility is particularly useful against disciplined defenses that take away the first read and force offenses to improvise.
Washington's two conference losses also look better in context than an 0-2 record suggests. The Huskies lost by three to Minnesota and four at USC, and both games remained competitive into the fourth quarter. They have not been overwhelmed by Big Ten competition.
The venue may ultimately be the separator. Iowa has historically struggled on long western trips under Kirk Ferentz, while Washington is back home after its first road game. In a matchup expected to be decided by a handful of possessions, the combination of home field and the opposing quarterback change is enough to favor the Huskies.
Iowa vs. Washington Best Bet
- Best Bet: Washington -2.5 (-115) Check out these best odds at BetMGM Sportsbook
Buying below three is critical. Washington only needs a field-goal victory to cash, while the displayed -3 would create a push on one of the most common margins in football.
Iowa's defense should keep the game close, but its offense now has to function with a first-time starting quarterback on the road. Williams gives Washington the better playmaking option at the position and should be enough to push the Huskies to their first Big Ten win.
