5 Minute ReadWashington State vs. Utah State Prediction: Can Cougars Pull Upset on Friday Night?
Washington State heads to Merlin Olsen Field at Maverik Stadium for a 9:00 PM ET matchup against Utah State on The CW. Both teams enter at 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the newly configured Pac-12, making Friday an important opportunity to reset a disappointing first month.
Utah State is favored by 4 points with a low total of 43.5. Washington State has dropped consecutive home games to Arizona and Fresno State, while the Aggies return home after falling 37-18 at Boise State.
Washington State vs. Utah State Recent Results
Washington State Cougars (1-4), (0-1 Pac-12)
Washington State's offensive problems reached a new low in a 26-6 home loss to Fresno State. The Cougars failed to reach the end zone and have now scored only 30 combined points over their last two games.
That followed a 34-24 loss against Arizona in which Washington State was more competitive offensively but could not consistently protect its quarterback or create enough defensive stops. Protection has become a significant issue throughout the season, with Caden Pinnick absorbing heavy pressure behind an offensive line that has surrendered 18 sacks.
The Cougars' lone victory came against Duquesne, 48-7. Against FBS opponents, however, Washington State has scored 10, seven, 24 and six points, leaving the offense with significant work to do.
The schedule deserves some context. Washington State began with road games at Washington and Kansas State before returning home, so the overall record was shaped by a difficult opening stretch. The concern is that the offense did not improve once the schedule became more manageable.
Utah State Aggies (1-4), (0-1 Pac-12)
Utah State lost its Pac-12 opener 37-18 at Boise State last week. The Aggies remained competitive for stretches but could not prevent Boise State from gradually taking control.
The season has followed a similarly inconsistent pattern. Utah State lost 29-17 at home to Idaho State, pushed Washington in a 16-14 road loss and was shut out 33-0 at Utah before earning its lone victory against Troy, 21-10.
There have been offensive flashes through players such as Eli Wood and Javen Jacobs, but the Aggies have scored more than 21 points only once all season. Sustaining drives has been a persistent issue against stronger defensive fronts.
Utah State has at least shown it can play competitive lower-scoring games. The two-point loss at Washington and 11-point win over Troy both fit the type of compressed game script expected Friday.
Washington State vs. Utah State Head to Head
Washington State leads the all-time series 4-2 and has won the last two meetings. The Cougars also beat Utah State in last season's bowl matchup.
- December 2025: Washington State 34, Utah State 21
- September 7, 2024: Washington State 49, Utah State 28
- September 4, 2021: Utah State 26, Washington State 23
- November 3, 1961: Washington State 34, Utah State 14
Friday will be only the second meeting between these programs in Logan. Washington State won the previous road matchup there 46-6 in 1950.
The current versions of both teams are much less explosive than the offenses that met in 2024, making the recent series results less useful than the current low total and offensive struggles.

Washington State vs. Utah State Line Movement and Betting Splits
Utah State has generally been priced between a field goal and four points, with the current market sitting at -4. The low total has also remained in the mid-40s before settling at 43.5.
There are no verified sportsbook betting splits strong enough to force into the handicap. The important market feature is the combination of a four-point spread and a total barely above 40, creating additional value for an underdog capable of keeping the game within one possession.
Washington State vs. Utah State Prediction
This matchup does not provide a major FairPlay AI discrepancy. The projection makes Utah State only about a 1-point favorite, however, compared with the actual market at -4. That roughly three-point gap gives Washington State meaningful support as the underdog despite its recent offensive struggles.
The low total strengthens the case. When a game is expected to produce only around 43 or 44 combined points, each possession becomes more valuable and there are fewer opportunities for the favorite to generate separation. Washington State can play poorly offensively and still cover if Utah State struggles to move beyond the low 20s.
Washington State's recent scoring profile is clearly the concern. Six points against Fresno State and seven at Kansas State show how quickly this offense can disappear when pressure reaches Pinnick. The Cougars have to keep him upright enough to generate intermediate passing plays instead of constantly playing behind the sticks.
Utah State has not demonstrated the type of offense that should automatically exploit those weaknesses. The Aggies have scored 17 or fewer in three of five games and were shut out by Utah. Even at home, this is a team that has generally needed its defense to keep the margin manageable.
The Cougars also have the more favorable recent series history. Washington State has beaten Utah State in each of the last two meetings and enters with familiarity against an opponent it handled in last season's bowl game.
Utah State's best argument is home field and the ability to create pressure against Washington State's offensive line. If the Aggies repeatedly put Pinnick into third-and-long situations, they can create exactly the type of short-field opportunities that allow a limited offense to build margin.
Still, +4 creates room for a game Washington State does not need to win outright. A 20-17 or 23-20 Utah State victory is enough, and the FairPlay projection suggests this matchup should be closer to pick'em than the actual market indicates.
Washington State vs. Utah State Best Bet
- Best Bet: Washington State +4 (-110) Check out these best odds at BetMGM Sportsbook
Neither offense has shown enough consistency to comfortably lay multiple points in a game with such a low total. Washington State has obvious flaws, but Utah State has not produced enough offensively to justify expecting comfortable separation.
The FairPlay AI projection being roughly three points tighter than the sportsbook spread adds support in the Prediction section, while the broader handicap comes from the compressed scoring environment. Washington State should have enough chances to remain inside one possession.
