5 Minute ReadMinnesota vs. Purdue Prediction: Can Boilermakers Topple Red-Hot Golden Gophers?
Minnesota visits Ross-Ade Stadium for an 8:00 PM ET Big Ten matchup on Big Ten Network. The Golden Gophers are 4-1 and 2-0 in conference play after consecutive wins over Washington and Michigan, while Purdue enters 2-3 and 1-1 after upsetting Illinois on the road.
Minnesota is favored by 2.5 points with the total set at 50. That number has fallen sharply from some early markets that had the Gophers favored by as many as 6.5, creating a significant shift toward Purdue entering kickoff.
Minnesota vs. Purdue Recent Results
Minnesota Golden Gophers (4-1), (2-0 Big Ten)
Minnesota improved to 4-1 with a 20-14 home victory over Michigan. The Gophers followed their road win at Washington with another close conference victory, putting themselves in excellent early position in the Big Ten race.
Drake Lindsey has completed 66.9% of his passes for 1,087 yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions. His consistency has allowed Minnesota to win without requiring the offense to become overly aggressive.
TJ Thomas leads the rushing attack with 307 yards, while Noah Jennings has produced 345 receiving yards. The offense has been more balanced than explosive, which fits P.J. Fleck’s preferred approach.
Minnesota’s special teams have also been excellent. Javon Tracy has already produced two punt-return touchdowns and ranks among the national leaders in return production, giving the Gophers another way to generate field position.
Purdue Boilermakers (2-3), (1-1 Big Ten)
Purdue produced one of Week 5’s biggest upsets by beating Illinois 24-17 in Champaign. The Boilermakers entered as significant underdogs but controlled enough of the second half to earn their first Big Ten victory since 2023.
Ryan Browne continued his excellent individual season with 255 passing yards and a touchdown. He enters Saturday with 1,390 passing yards while completing 70.5% of his attempts and has thrown only one interception.
The offensive line also took a major step forward. Purdue prevented Illinois from recording a sack despite starting true freshman Rico Schrieber at right tackle, while multiple interior linemen produced their best pass-blocking performances of the season.
The defense finally complemented the offense as well. Purdue forced critical second-half stops, intercepted Illinois in the red zone and protected a late one-score advantage after struggling badly against UCLA and Notre Dame earlier in the season.
Minnesota vs. Purdue Head to Head
Minnesota leads the all-time series 42-35-3, but Purdue has historically been much stronger when hosting the matchup.
- October 11, 2025: Minnesota 27, Purdue 20
- November 11, 2023: Purdue 49, Minnesota 30
- October 1, 2022: Purdue 20, Minnesota 10
- October 2, 2021: Minnesota 20, Purdue 13
Purdue has won two of the last three meetings at Ross-Ade Stadium and owns a substantial historical home advantage in the series.
Last season’s game was also competitive. Minnesota needed a fourth-quarter interception return for a touchdown to finally create separation in a 27-20 home victory.

Minnesota vs. Purdue Line Movement and Betting Splits
Minnesota opened as high as a 6.5-point favorite in some markets before the spread collapsed toward -2.5. That four-point move is one of the most significant adjustments on Saturday’s evening board.
DraftKings betting splits strongly reinforce that movement. Minnesota is receiving more than 70% of individual spread bets, yet Purdue has attracted roughly 79% of the handle at +2.5.
That means significantly larger average wagers are landing on the Boilermakers despite the majority of bettors backing Minnesota. The moneyline shows the same pattern, with Purdue attracting substantially more money despite receiving fewer individual wagers.
Minnesota vs. Purdue Prediction
FairPlay AI is essentially aligned with the current sportsbook line, projecting Minnesota around -2.5. There is no meaningful internal projection edge toward Purdue, making the dramatic market movement and football matchup more important than the AI number.
Browne is the first reason Purdue can stay inside the number. He is completing more than 70% of his passes, has thrown for nearly 1,400 yards and has only one interception. That type of quarterback efficiency is extremely valuable for a home underdog because it reduces the likelihood of gifting Minnesota short fields.
The offensive line’s performance at Illinois may be just as important. Purdue entered that matchup with serious protection concerns and then did not allow a sack. If Browne receives similar time Saturday, Purdue has enough passing production to challenge Minnesota downfield.
Minnesota’s defense still presents a difficult test. The Gophers just held Michigan to 14 points and have shown they can win lower-possession games without asking Lindsey to create 35 points. Purdue cannot afford the explosive defensive breakdowns that defined its losses to UCLA and Notre Dame.
The situational spot favors Purdue more than the records suggest. Minnesota has just produced consecutive emotional victories over Washington and Michigan, while Purdue returns home immediately after finally ending its long Big Ten drought. The Boilermakers should enter with considerably more confidence than they had two weeks ago.
The market move cannot be ignored either. A number that reached Minnesota -6.5 has been cut all the way to -2.5 despite the Gophers receiving most individual bets. That combination of line movement and larger Purdue wagers suggests significantly stronger resistance than the records alone would imply.
Getting +2.5 does not provide the protection of a full field goal, but Purdue has enough offensive efficiency to compete outright. If Browne protects the football and the defense carries over even part of last week’s improvement, this should remain a one-possession game throughout.
Minnesota vs. Purdue Best Bet
- Best Bet: Purdue +2.5 (-102) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
FairPlay AI agrees with the sportsbook and does not create a projection advantage for Purdue. The stronger case comes from Browne’s efficiency, home field and one of the most substantial line moves of the week.
Purdue just proved it can win a Big Ten road game, and the betting handle has moved heavily toward the Boilermakers despite far fewer tickets. Minnesota deserves to be favored, but Purdue has enough offensive stability to stay within a field goal and threaten another outright upset.
