5 Minute ReadAppalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Prediction: Can App State Bounce Back on Friday Night After Getting Upset by ODU?
App State visits Brooks Stadium for an 8:00 PM ET Sun Belt matchup on ESPN2. The Mountaineers enter at 3-2 and 0-1 in conference play after a 10-3 loss to Old Dominion, while Coastal Carolina sits at 2-4 and 1-1 after winning 27-21 at Marshall.
The market is essentially pricing this as a toss-up, with App State laying only 1.5 points and available at -115 on the moneyline. The quarterback uncertainty surrounding Singleton adds risk, but the Mountaineers still own the stronger overall statistical profile and have created significantly more explosive offense when playing in normal conditions.
Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Recent Results
Appalachian State Mountaineers (3-2), (0-1 Sun Belt)
App State suffered its second loss of the season with a 10-3 defeat against Old Dominion. The game was played through heavy rain and strong winds, making it difficult to draw normal conclusions from an offense that had been significantly more productive through September.
The Mountaineers opened the season with three straight wins, beating Maine 55-3, East Carolina 27-24 and Charlotte 26-21. Their first loss came in a competitive 41-31 road game against NC State before the offense stalled completely against ODU.
Before last week's weather-affected game, Singleton had been averaging more than 300 passing yards per contest while completing better than 72% of his attempts. App State enters Friday averaging 402.8 total yards and 28.4 points per game despite scoring only three last week.
The defense has also created consistent opportunities. App State has eight interceptions through five games, ranking among the national leaders, while an improved pass rush has helped create several of those takeaways.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (2-4), (1-1 Sun Belt)
Coastal Carolina earned a much-needed 27-21 victory at Marshall last week. The Chanticleers built a 27-0 advantage before surviving a late comeback attempt.
Turnovers drove much of that success. Coastal forced six giveaways, giving the offense repeated short fields and allowing the Chanticleers to build separation despite finishing with only 308 total yards.
Dominic Lee-Knicely produced the offensive highlight with 169 rushing yards, including a 70-yard touchdown. Deuce Bailey has been the more consistent centerpiece over the full season, throwing for 1,340 yards and 13 touchdowns against only three interceptions.
Coastal remains vulnerable defensively despite last week's victory. The Chanticleers are allowing 403.3 total yards and nearly 190 rushing yards per game, creating opportunities for App State to stay balanced even if Singleton is limited.
Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Head to Head
App State leads the all-time series 7-5, but Coastal Carolina has completely controlled the recent rivalry with four consecutive victories.
- October 18, 2025: Coastal Carolina 45, Appalachian State 37
- November 7, 2024: Coastal Carolina 38, Appalachian State 24
- November 3, 2023: Coastal Carolina 27, Appalachian State 24
- November 3, 2022: Coastal Carolina 35, Appalachian State 28
The Chanticleers have also won three straight meetings at Brooks Stadium. App State's lone victory in Conway came in 2018, when the Mountaineers won 23-7.
That recent history adds legitimate risk to backing App State on the road. The current matchup still looks different because the Mountaineers enter with the stronger defensive numbers and a passing offense capable of stressing a Coastal secondary that has allowed opponents to move the football consistently.

Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Line Movement and Betting Splits
App State opened around a short 1.5-point favorite and has remained near that number, with very little meaningful spread movement. The moneyline has also remained close to even money, giving the Mountaineers a relatively inexpensive path to simply win.
Current moneyline splits favor App State, with roughly 72% of individual wagers and 56% of the handle backing the Mountaineers. The spread distribution also leans toward App State, although the money is more balanced there.
The more significant market move has occurred on the total, which has fallen from roughly 51.5 to 48.5. That adjustment reflects App State's quarterback uncertainty and last week's low-scoring performance, although the weather conditions against Old Dominion played a major role in that result.
Appalachian State Team News and Injuries
Singleton is the most important status to monitor. App State's starting quarterback was listed as questionable during the week after producing 1,278 passing yards and seven touchdowns through the first five games.
Henry Hasselbeck is the next quarterback on the depth chart and has appeared in every game, although his passing sample remains small. He has also shown enough mobility to contribute as a runner.
The potential quarterback change makes the moneyline preferable to laying a larger number. App State only needs to survive and win rather than create margin if Singleton is limited or unavailable.
Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Prediction
The Old Dominion result creates an opportunity to buy App State after its worst offensive performance of the season. The Mountaineers scored only three points, but the combination of heavy rain and strong winds dramatically reduced the effectiveness of a passing attack that had been one of the team's biggest strengths.
Coastal's victory at Marshall also deserves some context. Forcing six turnovers is excellent defensive football, but it is difficult to count on that level of takeaway production every week. Coastal built a 27-point lead despite generating only 308 yards because the defense repeatedly created advantageous situations.
App State has the stronger underlying team profile. The Mountaineers are averaging nearly 30 more total yards per game while allowing almost 68 fewer. Their defense has also produced eight interceptions, giving them their own path to creating short fields against Bailey.
The Singleton injury is the biggest threat to the wager. He gives App State a considerably higher passing ceiling than Hasselbeck, and Coastal can become much more aggressive against the run if the backup is forced into his first extended action.
Even in that scenario, Coastal's run defense provides App State another route. The Chanticleers are allowing nearly 190 rushing yards per game, so the Mountaineers can lean into the ground game rather than asking a backup quarterback to throw 35 times.
Coastal's offense can create problems through Bailey and Lee-Knicely. Bailey has protected the football exceptionally well, while Lee-Knicely's breakout performance at Marshall gives the Chanticleers a legitimate rushing threat. App State cannot assume its defense will simply control the matchup because of the statistical edge.
The deciding factor is the price. App State does not need to cover multiple points or overcome Coastal's recent series dominance by a significant margin. At -115, the Mountaineers only need their stronger overall defense and more balanced roster to produce one more scoring possession.
Appalachian State vs. Coastal Carolina Best Bet
- Best Bet: Appalachian State Moneyline (-115) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
Coastal Carolina has dominated the recent series and enters with momentum from its win at Marshall, but six forced turnovers helped make that performance look more comfortable than the underlying offensive production suggests.
App State owns the stronger overall statistical profile, creates takeaways at an elite rate and has multiple offensive paths against a Coastal defense allowing more than 400 yards per game. The quarterback uncertainty adds risk, but -115 is inexpensive enough to back the Mountaineers to rebound and earn their first Sun Belt victory.
