Alabama vs. Tennessee Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Saturday, October 17th

The Alabama Crimson Tide head to Knoxville for the Third Saturday in October against a Tennessee Volunteers team looking for a third consecutive home win in the rivalry. Can DeSean Bishop and Tennessee's powerful rushing attack keep Keelon Russell and Alabama from creating enough separation to cover more than a touchdown? Check out this Alabama vs. Tennessee prediction and best bet for Saturday, October 17.

Alabama vs. Tennessee Prediction: Can Vols Compete with Bama in Third Saturday in October Rivalry?

No. 6 Alabama visits No. 14 Tennessee at Neyland Stadium for a 3:30 PM ET SEC showdown on ABC. Both teams enter at 5-1 overall, with Alabama sitting 3-1 in conference play and Tennessee at 2-1.

The Crimson Tide are favored by 7.5 points after suffering their first loss against Georgia, while Tennessee has won consecutive games over Auburn and Arkansas. The extra half-point beyond a touchdown creates an appealing number on a Volunteers team that has become particularly difficult to beat in Knoxville.

Alabama vs. Tennessee Recent Results

Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1), (3-1 SEC)

Alabama suffered its first defeat last Saturday when Georgia left Tuscaloosa with a 20-17 victory. The Crimson Tide entered averaging nearly 50 points per game but were held scoreless in the fourth quarter and finished with 346 total yards.

Keelon Russell completed 16 of 30 passes for 185 yards and a touchdown while adding 41 rushing yards. Alabama still produced 161 yards on the ground, but Georgia repeatedly forced the Tide to sustain longer possessions instead of giving up the explosive scoring plays that had defined the first five games.

The loss came after Alabama scored at least 45 points in each of its first five contests, including 56 at Mississippi State. Russell has thrown for 1,599 yards with 12 touchdowns and only two interceptions while adding 225 rushing yards and four more scores.

Alabama's defense also remains dangerous because of its ability to create extra possessions. The Crimson Tide have forced 14 turnovers through six games, including nine interceptions.

Tennessee Volunteers (5-1), (2-1 SEC)

Tennessee earned its second consecutive SEC victory with a 24-17 win at Arkansas. The Volunteers trailed 14-10 entering the fourth quarter before scoring two touchdowns and controlling the final period.

DeSean Bishop scored the decisive touchdown and remains the foundation of Tennessee's offense. He enters Saturday with 678 rushing yards and eight touchdowns while averaging 113 yards per game.

The Vols have leaned heavily into that rushing identity. Tennessee is averaging 228.3 rushing yards per game, ranking among the best teams nationally and second in the SEC.

The defense has provided an equally strong foundation. Tennessee leads the FBS with 25 sacks and has 48 tackles for loss, giving the Vols the type of disruptive front capable of creating problems for Alabama's offensive line.

Alabama vs. Tennessee Head to Head

Alabama leads the all-time series 61-40-7, but Tennessee has won each of the last two meetings played at Neyland Stadium.

  • October 18, 2025: Alabama 37, Tennessee 20
  • October 19, 2024: Tennessee 24, Alabama 17
  • October 21, 2023: Alabama 34, Tennessee 20
  • October 15, 2022: Tennessee 52, Alabama 49

The venue has become particularly important recently. Tennessee's 52-49 win in 2022 ended a long Alabama winning streak, and the Vols followed it by beating the Tide 24-17 in Knoxville in 2024.

A third consecutive home victory over Alabama would be Tennessee's first such run in the rivalry since the late 1990s.

Alabama vs. Tennessee Line Movement and Betting Splits

Alabama was available closer to a six-point favorite in earlier portions of the market before climbing through the key number of seven and reaching -7.5. Tennessee bettors are therefore receiving significantly more protection than the opening numbers offered.

The betting splits are heavily tilted toward Alabama. The Crimson Tide are taking roughly 69% of spread tickets and close to 80% of the handle at -7.5, leaving Tennessee as one of the less popular ranked home underdogs on Saturday's board.

The total has fallen substantially from early numbers in the mid-50s to 50.5. Despite that decline, the Over is still receiving approximately 89% of bets and 80% of the handle.

Alabama vs. Tennessee Prediction

The move through seven is the biggest reason Tennessee becomes attractive. Alabama is clearly capable of winning in Knoxville, but there is an important difference between asking the Tide to win and asking them to create at least eight points of separation against a top-15 team on the road.

Tennessee's rushing attack gives the Vols a direct way to shorten the game. Bishop has been one of the SEC's most productive backs, and a team averaging more than 228 rushing yards per contest can reduce Alabama's total possessions while keeping Russell on the sideline.

The Vols also possess the type of defensive front required to challenge Alabama. Tennessee leads the country in sacks and has been consistently disruptive in opposing backfields. Georgia showed last week that Russell can be made considerably less explosive when forced to repeatedly operate from longer down-and-distance situations.

Alabama's run defense remains the biggest concern for the wager. If the Tide erase Bishop on early downs, Tennessee's offense becomes much more difficult to trust. The Vols cannot spend the afternoon living in third-and-long and expect the defense to continuously compensate.

Russell also creates a matchup problem because he can punish pressure with his legs. Tennessee needs disciplined rush lanes rather than simply sending extra bodies and allowing the Alabama quarterback to escape into open space.

The home environment helps considerably. Alabama has already shown it can win big road games, but Neyland Stadium has become a very different setting in this rivalry. Tennessee has won the last two meetings there, including one with a similar one-score profile in 2024.

The low total also strengthens the underdog position. At 50.5, each point represents a larger percentage of the expected scoring. Tennessee can lose 27-24, 28-21 or 24-20 and still cash +7.5.

Alabama vs. Tennessee Best Bet

Alabama remains the more complete team and could easily bounce back from the Georgia loss with a victory, but the number has moved beyond a full touchdown in one of the SEC's most hostile road environments.

Tennessee can control tempo with Bishop, pressure Russell with one of the country's best pass rushes and remain competitive without needing to win outright. Getting the hook above seven creates enough protection to take the Volunteers despite overwhelming public support for Alabama.
