Oklahoma State vs. Houston Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest CFB Odds for Saturday, October 17th

The Oklahoma State Cowboys bring one of the hottest offenses in the country to Houston for a ranked Big 12 matchup against the Cougars. Can Drew Mestemaker, Caleb Hawkins and Oklahoma State stay within one possession against Conner Weigman and a Houston team coming off a dominant road win at Kansas State? Check out this Oklahoma State vs. Houston prediction and best bet for Saturday, October 17.

Oklahoma State vs. Houston Prediction: Can Drew Mestemaker, Cowboys Continue Strong Turnaround in Big 12 Battle?

No. 18 Oklahoma State visits No. 20 Houston at TDECU Stadium for a 7:30 PM ET kickoff on FOX. The Cowboys enter at 4-1 and 2-0 in Big 12 play, while Houston sits at 5-1 and 2-1.

Houston is favored by 4.5 points with a massive total of 62.5. Both offenses are playing some of their best football of the season, which makes catching more than a field goal with Oklahoma State particularly appealing.

Oklahoma State vs. Houston Recent Results

Oklahoma State Cowboys (4-1), (2-0 Big 12)

Oklahoma State won its fourth consecutive game with a 42-28 victory over UCF. The Cowboys have now scored more than 40 points in three straight games for the first time since 2018.

Mestemaker threw for 304 yards and two touchdowns against UCF, extending his streak of 300-yard passing performances to four games. He is averaging 315 passing yards per contest, ranking among the national leaders.

The offense also has elite balance. Caleb Hawkins is averaging more than 100 rushing yards per game, while Wyatt Young is above 90 receiving yards.

Oklahoma State is the only FBS team with a quarterback, running back and receiver all ranked among the top 15 nationally in their respective yardage categories. That makes it extremely difficult to take one part of the offense away without creating another vulnerability.

Houston Cougars (5-1), (2-1 Big 12)

Houston produced its most impressive win of the season with a 35-16 victory at Kansas State. The Cougars controlled the matchup from the opening quarter and built a 28-3 lead before the Wildcats finally generated meaningful offense.

Conner Weigman threw for 242 yards and four touchdowns. Tight end Patrick Overmyer caught all four scores, tying the FBS single-game record for touchdown receptions by a tight end.

Houston also rushed for 233 yards and finished with 475 total yards. That offensive balance prevented Kansas State from loading its defense toward any one matchup.

The Cougars' only loss came against Texas Tech. Since then, Houston has responded strongly and now returns home for its first AP Top 25 matchup at TDECU Stadium in a decade.

Oklahoma State vs. Houston Head to Head

Oklahoma State vs. Houston Line Movement and Betting Splits

Houston has generally remained around a 4 to 4.5-point favorite, keeping Oklahoma State comfortably above the field-goal threshold.

The betting splits are among the strongest on the board in favor of the underdog. Oklahoma State is receiving approximately 67% of spread bets but an enormous 98% of the handle at +4.5.

The moneyline is similarly striking. Oklahoma State has attracted roughly three-quarters of individual moneyline wagers and more than 90% of the handle despite paying +160.

Oklahoma State vs. Houston Prediction

Houston's performance at Kansas State deserves substantial respect. The Cougars won both lines of scrimmage, produced 475 yards and made a quality opponent look completely overmatched for three quarters.

Oklahoma State presents a much different offensive challenge. Mestemaker has thrown for at least 300 yards in four consecutive games, Hawkins can punish light boxes and Young forces defenses to defend the entire field vertically.

That balance is particularly valuable as a road underdog. Oklahoma State does not need the game to unfold one specific way. If Houston slows the passing game, Hawkins can carry additional volume. If the Cougars crowd the box, Mestemaker has one of the nation's most productive downfield attacks.

Houston should score as well. Weigman is coming off a four-touchdown performance, and the Cougars just produced 233 rushing yards against Kansas State. This is unlikely to become the type of low-scoring game where one mistake automatically creates separation.

The 62.5 total is therefore important. Higher-scoring environments naturally create more opportunity for the underdog to stay inside the number, particularly when that underdog owns an offense capable of answering touchdowns quickly.

Oklahoma State also enters on a four-game winning streak and has already beaten a top-10 opponent this season. The Cowboys' current ranking is not based entirely on beating weak competition.

Houston's home field and more complete defensive profile make the Cougars the rightful favorite. The issue is asking them to win by five or more against an Oklahoma State offense playing at an elite level.

Oklahoma State vs. Houston Best Bet

Houston may ultimately win the game, but Oklahoma State has too much offensive balance to comfortably lay more than a field goal against it.

Mestemaker, Hawkins and Young give the Cowboys answers against almost any defensive approach, while 98% of the reported spread handle is already backing Oklahoma State. In a matchup expected to produce more than 60 points, +4.5 provides valuable room for another competitive Big 12 finish.
