The narratives I keep hearing are “Herbert is going to take Montgomery’s job” and week in and week out we still see Montgomery with more handoffs. This reminds me of the Zeke/Pollard situation in Dallas. Montgomery isn’t as efficient as Herbert but Chicago seems to trust him more and he sees volume every game, regardless of the game script. He has 13+ rushes in 4 straight games and 3 of those were losses. Tomorrow Chicago finds themselves favored against a two-win Lions team.
Montgomery averages 14.7 rush attempts if you disregard the game he got hurt in the 1st quarter after just 3 handoffs. Detroit allows the 9th most rush attempts to running backs and Montgomery has a solid history against Detroit. Last year Monty had games of 17 and 23 handoffs. In his career, he is 5/6 on hitting this prop against Detroit with the one miss falling by the hook at exactly 13.
Herbert is a great talent and will definitely be utilized in this game but this isn’t asking for much out of Montgomery. Monty accumulated 15 handoffs against a Dallas team that never allowed Chicago to lead and trailed by three possessions in the first half. This game should be significantly closer and I can’t imagine this Lions team rattling off two good weeks in a row so I think we see a favorable run script for Chicago. Let's roll!
