Seattle Seahawks vs. Los Angeles Prediction

The Rams (5-11) have been eliminated from the playoffs, but they have a chance to spoil the playoff hopes of their NFC West foes. The Seahawks sit at 8-8 on the season, and if they win today, they will be in the playoffs if the Lions beat the Packers. The Seahawks can still win this game and be eliminated, however, if the Packers win tonight (the spread is currently Packers -5). With the Rams playing for pride at this point in a spoiled season after a Super Bowl victory, what can we expect in this game?

I love Tyler Higbee in this game today. Higbee is one of many players on the verge of earning a bonus today with an incentive in the final game of the regular season. Betting on player incentives can be good or bad, depending on the situation. Given the fact that the Rams are already eliminated, Higbee should see his usual share of snaps. Higbee has played 90% of snaps in the last six weeks, and the Rams have been eliminated for most of those games. Higbee is facing a big bonus on his paycheck if he can hit 13 receiving yards tonight, which will give him a $500,000 bonus for hitting 600 receiving yards on the season. His line tonight is 37.5 yards. While it may sound silly to back an over of 37.5 yards when he only needs 13, the Rams should continue to play him the whole game, and this is an excellent spot against the Seahawks.

The Seahawk's defense has continued to drag the team down, as they have once again been a stronger offense than defense under Pete Carroll. The Seahawks rank 13th in overall offensive DVOA and 21st overall in defensive DVOA. Their secondary ranks 18th in DVOA, and their secondary is even worse against tight ends. In fact, no team in the ENTIRE league allows more yards to tight ends every game than the Seahawks. The Seahawks allow 70.9 yards per game to tight ends through the air on an average of 4.8 receptions. This is no fluke number, either, as the specific DVOA on defense against tight ends ranks the Seahawks at 28, above just four other teams.

In Higbee's first game against the Seahawks this season, he had just two catches for 14 yards. However, that was with John Wolford starting, and he was allergic to throwing to tight ends. Baker throws to tight ends more often, and Higbee is still one of the best receiving tight ends. To put it in perspective against other similar teams, the Cardinals and Broncos are third and fourth in receiving yards allowed to tight ends, and Higbee had 73, 61, and 94 yards against these two this season (played the Cardinals twice). Higbee should continue to play his usual snaps in this game, as the Rams don't need to rest starters. Higbee should hit his incentive early but also continue to get yards against the worst team in the league against tight ends.
