Two teams heading in opposite directions collide in the Pacific Northwest this weekend, as the Seattle Seahawks host the Carolina Panthers during the NFL Week 3 late afternoon window.
Rookie quarterback Bryce Young has had a rough start, and due to an ankle injury tagged as doubtful, the Panthers expect to start veteran Andy Dalton against a Seahawks defense that has allowed the fourth-most passing yards through two games this season. Geno Smith bounced back in Week 2 with an impressive overtime win on the road against Detroit, tossing two touchdowns to Tyler Lockett, which included the walk-off game-winner in overtime.
Pete Carroll is an excellent head coach, while Frank Reich has yet to solidify himself in the same tier despite a couple of different gigs. The Panthers' personnel is among the worst in the league, and most of its defensive starters are injured, further increasing the gap between these two opponents ahead of Sunday's Week 3 tilt. The Carolina Panthers, for all of their struggles, have given up the fourth-fewest passing yards this season. However, they've played Atlanta and New Orleans, who are both run-centric offenses. This will change against Seattle, especially with a decimated secondary going up against a top-tier wide receiving corps. D.K. Metcalf is questionable with a rib injury, but many expect the alpha wideout to suit up, which helps Smith maintain a balanced offense.
The Seahawks' backfield has been underwhelming, with only 43 rushing attempts thus far, resulting in 167 yards and two touchdowns. They will need to figure it out against a vulnerable Panthers run defense, which has allowed the eighth-most rushing yards and fourth-most rushing touchdowns, taking some of the pressure off of Smith as a passer.
The Panthers have lost 11 of their last 13 road games, while the over has cashed in seven consecutive matchups between these two teams. The point total is currently set to an even 42 points, which is fairly low. The Panthers have scored 10 and 17 points, albeit without Dalton under center, but he's played well against the Seahawks in his career and could instill a bit of juice into a stale Carolina offense.
The Seahawks have failed to cover the spread in each of their last five games as favorites. They are laying six points against the Panthers, who wound up with a late touchdown in garbage time to cut their deficit to three points against a stout New Orleans defense on Monday Night Football.
