Washington Commanders vs. Seattle Seahawks Prediction, Pick, Odds: Can Sam Howell, Commanders Keep It Close?

Sam Howell and the Washington Commanders will attempt to log consecutive road wins when they travel to the Pacific North West to face the Seattle Seahawks in Week 10.

The Commanders held on to win outright against New England in Week 9, as Howell logged over 300 passing yards for his second consecutive game. He's doing this despite playing behind one of the league's worst offensive line units that has given up 44 sacks this season, second-most only behind the Giants. Washington's rushing attack also looked improved during their win against New England, finishing with 124 total rushing yards, a season-high through nine games played.

Geno Smith and the Seahawks offense has been struggling in 2023. Smith, who impressed everyone with a career year in 2022, has regressed this season, throwing for under 250 passing yards in four of his past five games played. The turnovers have been the back breaker though. Smith has fumbled in three consecutive games and recorded six interceptions in his past four. The Seahawks' run defense is also starting to become more vulnerable, allowing over 125 total rushing yards during their last three games played.

Washington is still in the NFC Wild Card hunt at 4-5. Seattle is currently holding a piece of the NFC West division lead at 5-3 due to the 49ers' losing slump, but Smith will need to improve quickly to generate some positive momentum for an offense that has scored above 20 points just once since Week 4.

NFL handicapper Matt MacKay shares his latest prediction and pick for the Washington Commanders vs. Seattle Seahawks.

Washington Commanders vs. Seattle Seahawks Prediction

This could be one of the more exciting matchups in Week 10. Washington has begun to generate explosive plays on offense, while both defenses surrender big momentum-shifting drives at a fairly high rate. Howell has been confident throwing the football despite playing behind a porous offensive line, while not receiving a lot of help from the Commanders' rushing attack.

Seattle has allowed over 125 rushing yards in three consecutive games, somehow emerging with a 2-1 record, but that did require a last-minute drive to re-gain the lead in a 24-20 home win over Cleveland a couple of weeks ago. Seattle couldn't score more than 20 points on the Cardinals and haven't looked explosive since logging back-to-back games with 37 points against Detroit and Carolina in Weeks 2 and 3.

Washington's defense has also begun to force more turnovers, entering Week 9 with eight turnovers forced in their last four games, including a game-sealing interception against the Patriots on the road in Week 9. Seattle tends to rely on a run-centric scheme that chews clock and moves the football methodically down the field, so we could see Kenneth Walker get going early. The Commanders allowed Rhamondre Stevenson to rip off a 60-plus yard touchdown run last week, while surrendering at least 100 rushing yards in seven of their nine games.

The pass defense for Washington has been its Achilles heel all season, so this is as good of a bounce-back spot as any for Smith to shed his turnover tendencies and let the ball loose. Each of the last five head-to-head matchups between Washington and Seattle has gone under the point total line, which is set to 44.5. The favorites have won each of Seattle's last six games, and they are laying -6.5 ATS at home, so oddsmakers believe the Seahawks are touchdown favorites in Week 10. However, Washington has covered the spread in each of its last four road games as underdogs.

Winning by seven points has been rare for the Seahawks this season, as they've only managed to accomplish this feat three times, with all three coming against bad teams like the Giants, Panthers, and Cardinals. Let's give Washington some respect here, as they can move the football quickly, while its rushing attack is coming alive ahead of a plus-matchup against Seattle's run defense. Washington is 4-4-1 ATS, so let's continue backing them on the road in a matchup that is more winnable than it may initially appear.
