The Lions have been on a heater lately, winning seven of their last eight games. The Lions rank 3rd in total yards in the NFL with 406.9 yards per game. They are well rounded, they pass for 258.9 YPG which is 2nd in the league, and rush for 135.9 YPG which ranks them 5th. This team is explosive and can put up points in a hurry. A concern for this team is the defense. The Lions give up 357 YPG which ranks them 20th in the league. Facing a team like the 49ers concerns me a little bit with how dangerous the 49ers are on that side of the ball. On the flip side, this Lions run defensive is good, and that is what the 49ers are best at, especially with Christian McCaffrey. While I do not think the Lions will "shut down" McCaffrey, I think that they can limit him if that is possible.
When looking at this matchup, an interesting statistic is the 3rd down conversion rate. The Lions defense knows how to get off the field on 3rd downs, while the 49ers offense is solid on 3rd downs. I think today, the Lions will come out to play and manage this game very well. I think Jahmyr Gibbs will have a break out game, and prove why he is one of the best in this rookie class. But let's not forget how good of a job Jared Goff is doing. I think he slices up this 49ers defense, and takes care of the ball. In this matchup, I think it will come down to a final drive and stay within a touchdown. I believe the 49ers home field advantage will play less of a factor than most people think, as the 49ers are only 5-3 at home during the regular season. Do not be surprised if the Lions win this game outright today.
