It’s been quite the opening week of NFL so far, starting on Thursday night in Kansas City and continuing on Friday in Brazil. We now head to Detroit for Sunday Night Football featuring a playoff rematch between the Rams and Lions.
No Sunday Night Football game would be complete without the best anytime touchdown scorers, so let’s get into it. Cooper Kupp and Matthew Stafford square off against Jahmyr Gibbs and Jared Goff. Who’s getting into the end zone tonight?
It's important to note that the amount of touchdown scorers will vary greatly depending on the defenses and point total of each matchup. We arrive to this one with a 53.5 total, and we’re expecting a lot of scores with these mediocre defenses. I’m leaning toward the over with some high-powered passing attacks and defenses that struggled at times a year ago, so I'm expecting a decent amount of TD scorers tonight compared to last Thursday night's Ravens vs. Chiefs game.

Cooper Kupp is back and healthy in the Rams offense this year, and Matthew Stafford desperately needs him. Kupp was limited in their matchup last year, and only caught five passes for 27 yards. Stafford was forced to turn his attention to Puka Nacua, who gashed the Lions for 100+ yards. The Lions now will be turning their attention on the young breakout star, and Kupp will no longer be doubled up like matchups in the past. He will take advantage tonight and connect with Stafford.

Jahmyr Gibbs is taking over the top spot in the Lions backfield this year, and deservedly so. He picked up steam towards the end of his rookie year, and showed his versatility in various roles. Gibbs accounted for 100 total yards between the rushing attack and short routes out of the backfield in the last meeting. He also found his way into the end zone, along with his RB partner David Montgomery. Both are solidly favored to score, but Gibbs will have significantly more touches and time on the field. He’s shifty in the open field and scores often from the 15-25 yard range, giving him even more opportunities.

The Lions will be looking to stretch the field against this weak Rams defense on Sunday night. Los Angeles was a bottom-half defense last year, allowing over 230 passing yards per game. They gave up 277 in the playoff game to Jared Goff's unit, and he spread the ball all over the field. The Lions have a plethora of offensive talent, which makes these odds harder to grab with how many guys can score. However, they did lose Josh Reynolds in the offseason to the Broncos, elevating Jameson Williams to the WR2 spot behind Amon-Ra. Williams is a speedster and also a deep threat, so the Lions don't need to be near the red zone for him to cash this on a big play. We'll take a chance with Williams in an expanded role against a porous secondary on SNF tonight.
