Panthers Team Breakdown
Carolina finished 8-9 last season, won the NFC South and pushed the Los Angeles Rams before suffering a 34-31 loss in the Wild Card round. Bryce Young remains the clear starting quarterback after throwing for 3,011 yards and 23 touchdowns, but he will not play in Canton.
Kenny Pickett will start and is expected to handle only a few series before undrafted rookie Haynes King takes over for most of the game. Carolina has also confirmed that its established starters will sit, placing greater responsibility on reserves such as Jonathon Brooks, Mitchell Evans, Brycen Tremayne and Ja’seem Reed.
Cardinals Team Breakdown
Arizona enters a rebuilding season after finishing 3-14 and last in the NFC West. Jacoby Brissett is listed first at quarterback, followed by Gardner Minshew II, Beck and Kedon Slovis, but Beck will receive the opening assignment while Brissett and Minshew are unlikely to play.
The third-round rookie spent most of his college career at Georgia before finishing at Miami, giving him experience in high-pressure environments and pro-style concepts. Arizona’s skill-position depth also includes Tyler Allgeier, rookie Jeremiyah Love, Simi Fehoko, Reggie Virgil and Xavier Weaver behind the established starters.

Pickett gives Carolina the more experienced quarterback during the opening portion of the game, but that advantage should disappear once King enters. The rookie is an athletic developmental passer who can create with his legs, yet extended preseason action behind reserve offensive linemen often leads to stalled drives, penalties and turnovers. Carolina also placed depth guard Saahdiq Charles on injured reserve before the game, creating another concern for an offense expected to rely heavily on its second and third units.
Beck has more at stake than the typical preseason starter. Brissett and Minshew are established veterans, but Arizona drafted Beck early enough to view him as a legitimate developmental option under new head coach Mike LaFleur. A clean performance could accelerate his push for regular-season opportunities, and starting the game should allow him to operate with some of Arizona’s stronger reserve players rather than entering after the offense has already been disrupted by substitutions. Kedon Slovis also gives Arizona another experienced college passer for the later stages.

Carolina’s recent playoff appearance explains its position as the slight favorite, but last season’s results carry limited value when Young and the starting lineup will remain on the sideline. Pickett may create an early lead, yet Arizona should have the more compelling quarterback situation over the full game because Beck is beginning the night with a genuine opportunity to climb the depth chart. Taking the Cardinals at +100 is preferable to laying additional juice on +1.5 in a matchup likely to remain close deep into the fourth quarter.
