Commanders vs. Lions Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest NFL Preseason Odds for Saturday, August 22nd

The Washington Commanders will visit the Detroit Lions at 12 PM ET on Saturday, August 22, at Ford Field in Week 2 of the NFL preseason. Detroit is a 1.5-point favorite with the total set at 35.5, but Washington enters with a much more aggressive plan for its regulars after sitting several key players in its opener. Check out this Commanders vs. Lions prediction and best bet for August 22.

Commanders vs. Lions Prediction: Can Commanders Find Preseason Success Again on Saturday Afternoon?

Detroit is laying 1.5 points at -105, with Washington +1.5 (-115). The Lions are -118 on the moneyline, the Commanders are -102 and the total sits at 35.5.

Washington finished 5-12 last season and missed the playoffs, while Detroit went 9-8 and also stayed home in January after falling out of the NFC North race. Both teams are installing significant changes entering 2026, which makes live preseason repetitions more meaningful than they would be for a settled veteran roster.

Commanders vs. Lions Prediction

The Commanders beat Miami 20-7 in their preseason opener despite sitting Jayden Daniels. Sam Hartman directed all three of Washington's first-half scoring possessions and put himself in position to receive another significant workload with Marcus Mariota sidelined by an MCL sprain. Athan Kaliakmanis should handle the deeper reserve work.

Dan Quinn has said a good amount of Washington's starters will play Saturday on a player-by-player basis. Daniels remains the biggest question and would likely receive only a short stint if cleared, but Washington should expose more of its regular offense and defense than it did against Miami. Center Nick Allegretti, cornerback Trey Amos and running back Rachaad White are among those already ruled out.

Detroit takes the opposite approach. Dan Campbell has historically protected his established stars in August, so Jared Goff and most of the Lions' core are expected to remain spectators. Joshua Dobbs will start and should receive considerably more work than he did in Detroit's 16-14 loss to Cincinnati, with rookie Luke Altmyer also due another extended evaluation after attempting 22 passes in the opener.

Dobbs getting extra reps gives Detroit a competent veteran quarterback, but Washington's depth already looked sharper last week. Hartman was effective directing the offense, and the Commanders now add a larger collection of players who are expected to have regular-season roles.

Commanders vs. Lions Pick

Detroit deserves respect at home, but this is one of the slate's clearest differences in preseason intent. Washington is deliberately increasing its regulars' workload while the Lions continue protecting their biggest names. With the moneyline essentially a pick'em, there is no need to take the 1.5 points.
