The 49ers and Rams meet Thursday night in the United States, with kickoff scheduled for 8:35 PM ET on Netflix. The game will actually begin Friday morning at 10:35 AM local time in Melbourne, where close to 100,000 fans are expected at the MCG for the NFL's Australian regular-season debut. Los Angeles enters as a 3.5-point favorite with the total at 48.5.
Wednesday's opener between New England and Seattle turned into a 13-10 defensive battle, but this matchup has a much different profile. Matthew Stafford leads an offense that finished first in the NFL in scoring last season, while Brock Purdy gets Christian McCaffrey back alongside a revamped group of weapons that now includes Mike Evans.

San Francisco opens the season after going 12-5 in 2025. The 49ers won 23-19 at Philadelphia in the Wild Card round before their season ended with a 41-6 loss at Seattle in the Divisional Round. Injuries again played a significant role throughout the year, and San Francisco enters 2026 trying to get more from Purdy and an offense that still runs through McCaffrey while integrating Evans into Kyle Shanahan's system.
Los Angeles also finished 12-5 but advanced one round further, beating Carolina 34-31 and Chicago 20-17 before falling 31-27 to Seattle in the NFC Championship Game. 49ers vs. Rams Line Movement and Betting Splits
The Rams have attracted most of the spread action, drawing 69% of bets and 59% of the handle at -3.5. San Francisco has only 31% of tickets but 41% of the money, suggesting the average wager on the underdog has been larger even with Los Angeles remaining the more popular side.
The more interesting movement comes on the total. FanDuel opened at 49.5 before dropping to 48.5, while the Under is taking 58% of bets and a much stronger 74% of the handle. That is a meaningful lower-scoring market profile, but it also gives Over bettors a better entry point one point below the opener.

Los Angeles enters Week 1 with one of the easiest offenses in the league to trust immediately. Stafford is coming off an MVP season, Sean McVay remains the play-caller and Puka Nacua, Davante Adams and Kyren Williams give the Rams established playmakers at every level. This is not an offense installing a new quarterback or completely rebuilding its identity during September.
Stafford also shredded San Francisco in the second meeting last season, throwing for 280 yards and four touchdowns without an interception in a 42-point Rams performance. The 49ers have since changed defensive coordinators, bringing in Raheem Morris, but the front enters the opener with questions beyond simply learning a new structure.
Nick Bosa is expected to play after recovering from the torn ACL that ended his 2025 season, but his preparation has been limited. San Francisco is also dealing with significant defensive-line attrition, including the loss of Alfred Collins, while Mykel Williams has also been sidelined. That becomes dangerous against a Rams offense capable of attacking weakened fronts with Williams and Blake Corum before allowing Stafford to punish lighter boxes through play action.
The 49ers have enough offensive firepower to hold up their end of the total. Purdy is back under center with McCaffrey, while the addition of Evans gives Shanahan a true boundary and red-zone target capable of changing how defenses handle the middle of the field. George Kittle is also trending toward playing after his Achilles recovery, potentially putting another major matchup problem back into San Francisco's passing game.
Los Angeles made enormous defensive additions by acquiring Myles Garrett and bringing Aaron Donald out of retirement, but the full version of that unit will have to wait. Donald is staying in Los Angeles and will not play in Melbourne, taking an interior game-wrecker out of a matchup in which San Francisco will already be heavily focused on neutralizing Garrett through Shanahan's quick passing and misdirection game.
There is also a completely unprecedented travel component. San Francisco arrived roughly a week early to acclimate, while Los Angeles maintained its U.S. schedule and landed only about a day before the game. The unusual 10:35 AM local kickoff could create some early sloppiness, but it could just as easily affect defensive conditioning and tackling as the game progresses, particularly if the offenses can sustain tempo and extend drives.
The recent rivalry provides a strong blueprint for the Over. Last season's two meetings produced 49 and 68 points, and four of the last five matchups have cleared their closing total. Stafford and Purdy are surrounded by enough proven skill talent to create explosive plays, while both defenses enter with enough personnel uncertainty to make 48.5 reachable without requiring a completely chaotic shootout.
Wednesday's Patriots-Seahawks game was built around two defenses controlling offenses still trying to settle into Week 1. Thursday is different. McVay and Shanahan bring established systems, veteran quarterbacks and offensive cores capable of turning a handful of explosive plays into points quickly. A 27-24 game already clears the number, and there is legitimate upside well beyond that if either offense approaches the form it showed in last year's meetings.

The market has moved toward the Under, but dropping from 49.5 to 48.5 creates a more attractive number for two offenses with considerably more continuity and explosive-play potential than Wednesday's low-scoring opener. Stafford's Rams led the NFL in scoring last season, while Purdy now gets McCaffrey, Evans and potentially Kittle together against a Los Angeles defense that will not have Donald.
San Francisco's depleted defensive front is the biggest matchup concern for the Under, and Los Angeles already hung 42 points on the 49ers in their most recent meeting. With both teams capable of reaching the mid-to-high 20s, the better angle is backing the first NFL game in Australia to deliver considerably more fireworks than the opener.
