Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Prediction, Betting Pick, Latest NFL Week 5 Odds for Thursday Night Football

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers travel to Dallas for Thursday Night Football still searching for their first win while the Cowboys look to build on a dramatic comeback victory in Houston. Can Jalon Daniels handle his first road start on a short week while Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb attack a depleted Tampa Bay secondary? Check out this Buccaneers vs. Cowboys prediction and best bet for Thursday, October 8.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Prediction: Can Jalon Daniels, Bucs Put Up a Fight on Thursday Night Football?

Tampa Bay heads to AT&T Stadium at 0-4 after another narrow loss, this time falling 17-14 to Green Bay in Jalon Daniels' first NFL start. Dallas improved to 2-2 with a 34-30 comeback win over Houston and now returns home as an 8.5-point favorite with the total at 48.5.

This is a difficult turnaround for a Buccaneers offense already struggling to generate points. Baker Mayfield remains out, Daniels gets only a few days to prepare for his first road start and Tampa Bay now faces a Dallas offense that has scored at least 30 points in three consecutive games.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Recent Results

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-4)

Tampa Bay remained winless with a 17-14 home loss to Green Bay. Daniels completed 19 of 27 passes for 148 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions while adding 55 rushing yards, showing legitimate mobility but struggling when Green Bay increased the pressure late.

The Buccaneers produced 275 total yards and have now lost all four games despite remaining competitive deep into the second half. Their biggest problem continues to be finishing drives and generating explosive offense, and they have already allowed 16 sacks through four games.

Dallas Cowboys (2-2)

Dallas erased a 10-point halftime deficit to beat Houston 34-30, scoring 28 points in the second half. Prescott completed 32 of 45 passes for 335 yards and a touchdown, including the go-ahead score to Lamb with less than a minute remaining.

Lamb was nearly unstoppable, catching 17 passes for 189 yards and the winning touchdown. Javonte Williams added three rushing scores, giving Dallas multiple ways to finish possessions even when the offense struggled early.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Head to Head

  • December 22, 2024: Dallas Cowboys 26, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24
  • January 16, 2023: Dallas Cowboys 31, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 14
  • September 11, 2022: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 19, Dallas Cowboys 3
  • September 9, 2021: Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31, Dallas Cowboys 29
  • December 23, 2018: Dallas Cowboys 27, Tampa Bay Buccaneers 20

Dallas has won the last two meetings, including a 26-24 home victory in the most recent matchup. Three of the last five have been played in Dallas, where the Cowboys have won two of those three.

The personnel context is much different this time, particularly at quarterback for Tampa Bay. Instead of Mayfield or Tom Brady, the Buccaneers are asking an undrafted rookie to make his second career start against a Dallas team capable of creating substantial scoreboard pressure.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Line Movement and Betting Splits

Dallas has been priced as high as approximately -9.5 to -10 during the week before settling at -8.5. The total has also fallen substantially from early numbers above 50, reflecting the market's adjustment to Mayfield being unavailable and Daniels making another start.

The Cowboys are attracting both ticket and money support at the current spread, with roughly 70% of bets and about 85% of the handle backing Dallas -8.5. That is heavy overall support rather than a split where the money is moving against the public.

The drop from the higher Dallas numbers creates a more appealing entry point. Laying 8.5 still requires margin, but it avoids asking the Cowboys to win by double digits to cash the wager.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Team News and Injuries

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Mayfield is officially out again with the dislocated right thumb he suffered against Minnesota, leaving Daniels to make his second consecutive start. The rookie now has to transition from his NFL debut to his first road start with only four days between games.

Tampa Bay will also be without safety Antoine Winfield Jr. because of a rib injury and cornerback Benjamin Morrison because of a quadriceps injury. Those are significant secondary losses against Prescott, Lamb and George Pickens.

Linebacker SirVocea Dennis is also out, further thinning the middle of the defense. The Buccaneers do get Rueben Bain Jr. back without a game designation, while Bucky Irving, Chris Godwin and Emeka Egbuka are available to support Daniels offensively.

Dallas Cowboys

Dallas remains without linebacker DeMarvion Overshown and cornerback Cobie Durant because of hamstring injuries, while offensive lineman Drew Shelton is also out. Those defensive absences matter after Houston threw for 347 yards last week.

The major positive is the potential return of All-Pro guard Tyler Smith. Smith progressed from limited work early in the week to full participation Wednesday and was activated as Dallas looks to strengthen the interior of its offensive line against Vita Vea and Tampa Bay's front.

Lamb practiced fully despite a thigh issue and carries no game designation. Joey Porter Jr., Malik Hooker and James Houston are also available, giving Dallas more defensive personnel than it had earlier in the season.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Prediction

Tampa Bay's defense has played well enough to keep games close, but this is the most difficult offensive matchup the Buccaneers have faced since losing Mayfield. Dallas is scoring efficiently, Prescott is playing confident football and Lamb is coming off one of the best games of his career.

The absence of Winfield is particularly damaging. Tampa Bay already has to account for Lamb on nearly every passing down, and losing its best safety makes it harder to rotate coverage, disguise help and protect the middle of the field. Morrison being out further reduces the Buccaneers' flexibility at cornerback.

Prescott should also benefit from Smith's possible return. Tampa Bay's best chance to slow Dallas is creating interior pressure with Vea and forcing Prescott off his spot before deeper routes develop. Having an All-Pro guard back would significantly improve Dallas' ability to handle that matchup.

The other side of the ball is where this spread becomes more attractive. Daniels showed some positive traits against Green Bay, particularly as a runner, but he also threw two interceptions and struggled when the Packers brought pressure late. Dallas has obvious defensive flaws, but asking a rookie quarterback to diagnose pressure packages on a short week in his first road start is a much different assignment.

Tampa Bay has also struggled badly in pass protection. The Buccaneers have surrendered 16 sacks in four games, and Daniels' mobility can only erase so much of that problem. If Dallas forces him into third-and-long situations, the Cowboys can play more aggressively without worrying as much about Tampa Bay's rushing attack.

The concern with laying 8.5 is Dallas' defense. The Cowboys just allowed Stroud to throw for 347 yards and have been vulnerable through the air throughout the opening month. Daniels' scrambling ability also creates the possibility of extending drives when Dallas wins the initial pass-rush rep.

But Tampa Bay has not shown it can consistently turn those opportunities into touchdowns. The Buccaneers scored 14 against Green Bay, 16 against Minnesota and have repeatedly stalled after moving the football into scoring range. Covering 8.5 becomes much easier if Dallas reaches 28 to 31 points and Tampa Bay remains stuck in the teens.

Thursday's short turnaround also favors the team with the established veteran quarterback and healthier offensive structure. Dallas can lean on Prescott, Lamb, Pickens and Williams without reinventing its offense, while Tampa Bay is still building a reduced game plan around a rookie backup.

There is a plausible script where Tampa Bay's defense keeps this close for a half before Dallas' offense gradually creates separation. Once the Buccaneers are forced to chase points, Daniels becomes more exposed to pressure and turnover opportunities, giving the Cowboys a chance to extend the margin late.

Buccaneers vs. Cowboys Best Bet

Dallas has the offensive firepower to force Tampa Bay out of the conservative structure that helped Daniels stay competitive against Green Bay. With Mayfield out, Daniels making his first road start on a short week and Winfield missing from an already stressed secondary, the Buccaneers face disadvantages at the positions most likely to decide this matchup.

Dallas does not need a flawless defensive performance to cover. If Prescott and Lamb continue their current form and the Cowboys push into the upper 20s or low 30s, Tampa Bay's struggling offense may simply lack the scoring capacity to remain within one possession.
