5 Minute ReadSeahawks vs. Broncos Prediction: Can Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Seattle Bounce Back on TNF?
The Seattle Seahawks visit the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High to open Week 6, with both teams sitting at 3-2 after contrasting Week 5 results. Seattle is a 2.5-point road favorite with the total sitting at only 40.5, one of the lowest numbers on the NFL board.
Seattle is coming off a turnover-filled 32-29 loss to San Francisco, while Denver rallied for a 23-17 win over the Chargers despite producing only 224 total yards. The combination of Denver's offensive struggles, Seattle's defensive strength and significant reverse movement on the total creates a strong case for a much different game than the Seahawks' shootout last Sunday.
Seahawks vs. Broncos Recent Results
Seattle Seahawks (3-2)
Seattle fell 32-29 to undefeated San Francisco after four turnovers repeatedly put the Seahawks defense in difficult situations. The 49ers turned those mistakes into 21 points, allowing San Francisco to score 32 despite producing only 189 passing yards from Brock Purdy.
Sam Darnold finished with 195 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while taking five sacks. Jaxon Smith-Njigba remained the offense's most reliable weapon with 102 receiving yards and a touchdown, but Seattle's inability to protect the football erased several strong defensive possessions.
Turnovers have become a recurring problem for the Seahawks. Seattle has committed nine through five games, and those giveaways have created 44 opponent points. Cleaning up that area alone could substantially reduce the scoring environment compared with last week's final.
Denver Broncos (3-2)
Denver earned a 23-17 road victory over the Chargers despite another difficult offensive performance. Bo Nix threw for only 123 yards and one touchdown, while the Broncos finished with 224 total yards and needed a fourth-quarter comeback to escape Los Angeles.
J.K. Dobbins rushed 18 times for 68 yards and scored his first touchdown of the season, while Courtland Sutton caught Nix's fourth-quarter touchdown pass. Denver's offense still struggled to consistently sustain possessions, particularly before the final period.
The defense carried the Broncos. Denver sacked Justin Herbert five times, forced three turnovers and held him to only 121 passing yards. That defensive front becomes the foundation of Thursday's under case against a Seattle offensive line that just allowed Darnold to be sacked five times.
Seahawks vs. Broncos Head to Head
- September 8, 2024: Seattle Seahawks 26, Denver Broncos 20
- September 12, 2022: Seattle Seahawks 17, Denver Broncos 16
- September 9, 2018: Denver Broncos 27, Seattle Seahawks 24
- September 21, 2014: Seattle Seahawks 26, Denver Broncos 20 (OT)
Seattle has won three of the last four meetings, but the scoring history fits Thursday's low total better than it initially appears. Two of the last four finished with 46 points or fewer, including the 17-16 Monday night meeting in 2022.
The current versions of these teams also lean heavily on defense. Denver's offense is producing far less consistently than its previous iterations, while Seattle has built much of its 3-2 start around an elite defense rather than asking Darnold to carry high-scoring games every week.

Seahawks vs. Broncos Line Movement and Betting Splits
The total provides one of the strongest market signals of Thursday night. It opened around 42 and briefly reached 42.5 before falling all the way to 40.5 by game day.
That movement becomes much more interesting when compared with the betting splits. Roughly 82% of total bets and 87% of the handle are backing the over at 40.5, yet the market has continued moving in the opposite direction.
Normally, overwhelming ticket and handle support would put upward pressure on a total. Instead, the number has dropped approximately 1.5 to two points despite the vast majority of public betting activity backing the over.
That is a classic reverse-movement profile and strong evidence that the market is respecting lower-scoring positions despite the visible over money. It should not automatically be labeled definitive sharp action, but the combination of an over-heavy betting distribution and a falling total is exactly the type of sharp-leaning signal worth incorporating into the handicap.
Seattle has also attracted heavy support on the side, with approximately three-quarters of spread bets and around 80% of the handle backing the Seahawks -2.5. The cleaner contrarian angle remains the total rather than Denver against the spread.
Seahawks vs. Broncos Team News and Injuries
Seattle Seahawks
Smith-Njigba is cleared to play after being limited early in the week with an ankle injury. He returned to full participation Wednesday and enters Thursday without a game designation, preserving Seattle's most dangerous receiving matchup against a depleted Denver secondary.
Leonard Williams is also available despite playing through an ankle issue. His presence is significant against a Broncos offense already struggling to generate explosive plays because Seattle can create interior pressure without constantly committing additional rushers.
The Seahawks will be without Zach Charbonnet as he continues working back from last season's ACL injury. Rookie Jadarian Price is already on injured reserve, leaving Seattle with a thin running back room built around Emanuel Wilson, George Holani and other depth options.
Starting linebacker Drake Thomas is out with an ankle injury, while Chazz Surratt is also out because of a calf issue. Seattle therefore loses some second-level depth, particularly against Denver's rushing attack and short passing game.
Denver Broncos
Denver's biggest injury problem is in the secondary. All-Pro cornerback Pat Surtain II is out with an ankle injury, while starting safety Talanoa Hufanga is also unavailable.
Starting cornerback Riley Moss is questionable after being limited throughout the week with a rib injury. His availability is particularly important because Denver is already preparing to face Smith-Njigba without Surtain.
The good news for Denver is that its defensive front remains relatively intact. Brandon Jones, Sai'vion Jones and Ben Powers are all cleared after appearing on the injury report earlier in the week.
The secondary absences create legitimate danger for the under because Seattle has the receiving talent to attack them. Denver's best response will be preventing Darnold from having enough time to exploit those matchups, making the front-seven battle especially important.
Seahawks vs. Broncos Prediction
The strongest argument for the under starts with Denver's offense. The Broncos scored 23 last week, but that number overstates how effectively they moved the football. Denver finished with just 224 total yards, and Nix threw for only 123.
Sean Payton's offense has struggled to generate explosive plays consistently. Denver is near the bottom of the league in total offense and has particularly struggled on third down, creating too many possessions that end before reaching scoring range.
That becomes a serious problem against Seattle. The Seahawks enter Thursday with one of the NFL's strongest defenses in both total yardage and passing yards allowed. Even during the 32-point loss to San Francisco, Seattle's defense was repeatedly placed in compromised situations by four offensive turnovers.
San Francisco scored 21 points directly off those giveaways. That distinction is critical when evaluating last week's 61-point final. Seattle did not suddenly become an easy defense to move the ball against. Its offense repeatedly handed San Francisco advantageous field position.
Turnover regression therefore becomes part of the under case. If Darnold and the Seahawks simply protect the football at a more normal rate, Denver will have to manufacture longer scoring drives rather than beginning possessions in favorable territory.
Seattle's offense has its own reasons to slow down. The running back room is depleted, the offensive line just surrendered five sacks and Darnold has now shown more volatility after a strong start to the season.
Denver's pass rush is perfectly positioned to attack that weakness. The Broncos recorded five sacks against Herbert and repeatedly disrupted a Chargers passing game that entered with more explosive potential than Denver's final defensive numbers suggested.
Surtain and Hufanga being out are the biggest threats to the wager. Smith-Njigba is having an outstanding season and should see favorable coverage opportunities. Denver cannot ask replacement defensive backs to survive in isolated coverage if Darnold has several seconds to survey the field.
That places enormous importance on the Broncos' front. If Denver can pressure Darnold without sending constant extra rushers, the defense can protect its injured secondary while forcing Seattle into shorter throws and longer drives.
The Seahawks' rushing situation also helps the under. Charbonnet remains unavailable and Price is on injured reserve, leaving Seattle without its preferred backfield depth. The Seahawks have struggled to establish a consistent running game even before those absences.
Denver should have every reason to play conservatively on offense. Nix has not shown enough downfield consistency to justify turning Thursday into a high-volume passing game against Seattle's secondary, especially after the Broncos won last week by allowing the defense to dictate the game.
Dobbins should get another sizable workload. Even if he is efficient, a run-heavy Denver offense that consumes clock and forces Seattle to string together long drives is favorable for an under at 40.5.
Thursday Night Football also compresses preparation. Both teams played physical games Sunday, with Seattle coming off an especially demanding divisional matchup against San Francisco. Short-week games often reward simpler offensive plans, protection of field position and defensive continuity.
The altitude adds another situational consideration. Seattle is traveling on a short week into Denver, where sustaining long drives can become increasingly difficult as the game progresses. That matters most if the Seahawks cannot establish the run and Darnold is forced into repeated dropbacks.
The total is low, so there is limited margin for mistakes. A defensive touchdown, multiple short fields or a special-teams score could quickly threaten the under. Seattle's turnover problems are the clearest route toward that type of game.
But the football matchup supports something closer to Denver's 23-17 victory last week than Seattle's 32-29 loss. The Broncos offense has not demonstrated the efficiency needed to push games toward 50 without substantial help from turnovers.
The market movement strengthens the case considerably. An opener around 42 to 42.5 has fallen to 40.5 even while more than 80% of bets and an even greater percentage of the money are backing the over.
That is the opposite of what would normally be expected from such overwhelming support. The market is effectively refusing to raise the total despite bettors repeatedly attacking the higher-scoring side.
A 20-17 Seattle win, 20-16 Denver win or even a 23-17 result all stay underneath 40.5 or land directly around the threshold. Neither offense needs to completely fail for the under to cash.
Seahawks vs. Broncos Best Bet
- Best Bet: Under 40.5 (-108) Check out these best odds at Caesars Sportsbook
Denver's offense has produced too little consistently to justify expecting a high-scoring game against an elite Seattle defense, while the Seahawks face a dangerous Broncos pass rush with a depleted backfield and an offensive line coming off a five-sack performance.
The market provides another major reason to trust the under. The total has fallen from roughly 42 to 42.5 down to 40.5 despite overwhelming betting support on the over, creating one of the clearest reverse-movement profiles of the Thursday night market.
Seattle's turnovers and Denver's secondary injuries create risk, but the more sustainable game script points toward defense, field position and long possessions. Under 40.5 is the preferred Thursday Night Football wager.
