Week one of the 2023 golf calendar is officially in the books, as we move to the first full field of the year following last week’s abbreviated event. With many of the world’s best teeing it up last week, the field is expectedly less star-studded this week as many have already departed for the mainland.
Even still, with the PGA Tour season just getting underway, there are plenty of interesting names in this field for us to parse through. Notably, last year’s winner Hideki Matsuyama returns to defend his title, as does runner-up Russell Henley whom he beat in a playoff.
Let’s take a closer look at the 2023 Sony Open, and who might find pay dirt come Sunday in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Sony Open Course Preview
Waialae Country Club

Coming in at 7,044 yards and Par 70, Waialae comes in well short of the PGA Tour average, leaving driving accuracy more important than distance coming into the week. One of the longest-held tournaments on the PGA Tour, every Hawaii open since its inception in 1965 was played here at Waialae.
While this course might be held in close proximity to last week’s at Kapalua, the course could not be more different. Where we saw wide gaping fairways last week, this course features much tighter landing spots, with accuracy rewarded on every shot up to the green. Longer hitters won’t fair nearly as well as they do most weeks, something to consider when narrowing in on a winner.
Sony Open Purse
Unlike the Sentry last week, which was deemed an “elevated” event, the Sony Open purse will be more in the normal range at a measly $7,900,000. The winner will walk away with, $1,422,000, the highest winner’s share ever given out since the event started in 1965.

While Matsuyama and Henley battled it out last year, the course allowed for these guys to maul it as there were more than a dozen players at -15 or better before all was said and done. With the lack of star power in the field, this event is typically wide open, and this year’s field should be no different.
Because long hitters are largely not rewarded as they are most weeks, guys that can keep the ball in play have an enormous advantage. With little data to go on as far as results this season, let’s take a closer look at one guy I think can find pay dirt on Sunday.

Sony Open Prediction
At +1.75, Conners comes into this event with the best True: Strokes Gained of anyone in the field, and with 16 rounds played here, I’m putting plenty of stock in that. In his four starts, Conners has finished top 15 in all four, making the cut each and every time.
In what will be his first start of calendar 2023, Conners finished 2022 with a bank, finishing top 25 in all four events he started from October through the end of the year. I like for another great finish from the Canadian in this one, and for him to find himself in the mix throughout.
