CJ Cup Byron Nelson First-Round Leader Predictions

The PGA Tour’s southern swing heads west this week, as TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, TX will play host to the 2024 CJ Cup Byron Nelson for the fourth straight year. As for the track itself, located just north of Dallas, TPC Craig Ranch will be a welcomed change for the field as it’s much more scorable than we’ve seen the past few weeks. 

Coming in at 7,414 yards, the par 71 features Bentgrass greens throughout that have a much lower slope rating than the Tour average. Best known for its 17th hole, a par 3 referred to as Ranch 17, the course has a good blend of drivable par 4s and shorter than average par 5s. 

With the year’s second major just a few weeks away and no signature status for this event, the big names of the PGA Tour have mostly opted to sit this one out. Even still, Dallas native Jordan Spieth (+1400) leads the field in the odds field, with Si Woo Kim (+1600), Jason Day (+2000), and Alex Noren (+2500) trailing just behind. 

With the 2024 PGA Championship at Valhalla just two weeks away, let’s take a closer look at three guys who could get off to hot starts this week as they prepare for the second major of the year.

As always, this season has been filled with ups and downs for Spieth, but he returns to his hometown this week playing against a field that he should be a cut above. With friendly greens this week, this course plays right into what Spieth does best and I look for his talent to shine through from the start.

Having missed the cut last week at the Zurich, Hoge had been playing well individually prior to that as he got off to a red hot start at the RBC Heritage in the week prior before a T18 finish. With a T6 and 8th at Pebble Beach and Riviera, respectively, Hoge now gets to play against a much weaker field and should fare well from the start. 

Trailing only Scottie Scheffler in SG: Approach, Hoge will have plenty of chances to go low this weekend and I like for that to start Thursday morning.

At 34 years old, Hubbard is playing the best golf of his life, as he comes into this event having not missed a cut in his past 12 starts. Playing with Ryan Brehm last week in the two-man Zurich Classic, Hubbard finished solo third, as his confidence continues to grow each and every week. 

This season, Hubbard finished T4 at Pebble Beach, marking the best individual finish of his career. Coming into the week ranked fifth on Tour in birdies, Hubbard gets a friendly track this week which will give him plenty of chances to bolster that ranking.
