Cameron Young Masters Prediction
Young enters Round 2 at +1, sitting just outside that key threshold we typically look for at Augusta. Historically, players need to be within about five shots of the lead after Round 1 to realistically contend, and while he’s just outside that mark, he’s far from out of it.
What’s encouraging is how he got there.
Young had a brutal start to his opening round, going +4 through his first seven holes. That’s the kind of start that can completely derail a round at Augusta. But instead of folding, he flipped a switch and played clean, composed golf the rest of the way.
From that point on, he carded three birdies and zero bogeys. That’s exactly the type of bounce-back you want to see heading into Round 2.
The underlying metrics tell an even better story.
Young ranked 10th in the field in strokes gained off the tee, which is arguably the most important foundation at Augusta. He’s doing the hard part at an elite level, consistently putting himself in position to score.
Where things went wrong was with his wedges and short game. He left himself in awkward spots on approach and failed to capitalize on some very gettable scoring opportunities. That’s typically not a long-term concern for a player of his caliber, and it’s an area that tends to correct quickly, especially round to round.
That’s the key angle here.
You’re getting a golfer who already stabilized after a rough start, is striking the ball at a high level, and simply needs average approach play to see a significant improvement in score.
There’s also a mindset advantage today.
Young doesn’t need to press. He’s close enough to the lead to stay patient and let the round come to him, which is exactly how you score at Augusta. Forced aggression usually leads to mistakes here, and I expect a much more controlled approach in Round 2.
With the way he closed Round 1 and how well he’s hitting the driver, this sets up as a strong bounce-back spot.
