The 3M Open leaderboard shifted dramatically Friday morning when Michael Kim followed an opening 69 with a 12-under 59, moving to 14 under through 36 holes. Despite Kim holding an eight-shot advantage over Scottie Scheffler at the time of the market snapshot, Scheffler remained the +160 favorite while Kim shortened to +310.
The gap is less significant than it initially appears because Kim had completed his second round before Scheffler began Friday’s play. Scheffler still had 18 holes to respond on a course producing extremely low scores, while first-round leader Ben Kohles remained firmly involved after beginning Friday at nine under.

Scheffler opened his first appearance at TPC Twin Cities with a bogey-free 6-under 65. He missed several fairways early but avoided mistakes, then gained more than three strokes with his putter while converting five attempts from outside 10 feet. That was an encouraging development after putting prevented him from making a stronger title push at The Open.
The world No. 1 entered Friday eight strokes behind Kim, but with an entire round in hand and ideal scoring conditions available. Matching Kim’s 59 would be an unreasonable expectation, although another round in the mid-60s could immediately move Scheffler within striking distance before the weekend.
His +160 price shows how aggressively the market values the talent gap between Scheffler and the rest of this field. He has not won since capturing The American Express in January, his only PGA Tour victory of the season, but he remains the FedExCup leader and recently finished tied for fourth at The Open Championship.
Scheffler has repeatedly contended without closing tournaments this year, but TPC Twin Cities presents one of his clearest opportunities to end that drought. His approach play should create constant chances against a weaker field, and Thursday’s putting performance suggests he is capable of converting enough of them to chase down the early leaders.

Kim created the defining round of the tournament by shooting a 12-under 59 on Friday morning. After beginning the event with a 2-under 69, he recorded one of the lowest rounds of the PGA Tour season and established the clubhouse target at 14 under.
The +310 price reflects both his commanding score and the reality that Scheffler still had his second round to play. Kim has already completed half the tournament, meaning he cannot respond until Saturday while Scheffler and several other contenders attack favorable Friday conditions.
Kim’s performance deserves respect beyond the score alone. He entered Friday outside the main group of favorites, but a 59 provides genuine separation and forces Scheffler to produce an excellent second round merely to remain within a manageable weekend margin.

Kohles held the overnight lead after firing a career-low 9-under 62 on Thursday. He hit 17 of 18 greens, found 12 of 14 fairways and gained more than five strokes on approach before finishing his round with an eagle at the par-5 18th.
The first-round leader continued moving lower Friday morning and reached 12 under through nine holes at the time of the live market. Kohles therefore remained much closer to Kim on the leaderboard than Scheffler, but his +1200 odds show that the market is skeptical about whether he can sustain that level for four rounds.
Kohles entered in strong form after winning on the Korn Ferry Tour in June and contending at the John Deere Classic. He has a legitimate path to the title, but maintaining elite approach numbers while handling weekend pressure will be substantially more difficult than producing one brilliant opening round.

Kim has placed himself in an excellent position, but Scheffler remains the player most likely to win because his second round had not started when these prices were posted. A 6-under or 7-under Friday would put him close enough to erase the remaining deficit over the final 36 holes.
The +160 price is extremely short for a player sitting eight shots behind the clubhouse leader, even with a round in hand. However, Scheffler’s combination of elite ball striking, improved putting and a weaker field explains why oddsmakers still expect the tournament to run through him.
TPC Twin Cities is producing enough birdies for Scheffler to make the move quickly. After months of close finishes and only one victory this season, this represents a realistic opportunity for the world No. 1 to finally turn another strong performance into a trophy.
