2026 BMW Championship Sleeper Picks: Bet on Hideki Matsuyama, Victor Hovland at Bellerive

The BMW Championship heads to Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis from August 20-23, with Scottie Scheffler installed as the overwhelming +300 favorite after winning the opening event of the FedExCup Playoffs. Can one of the longer-priced contenders take advantage if Scheffler cools off? Check out three BMW Championship sleepers and long-shot picks for this week's event.

2026 BMW Championship Sleepers: Can Hideki Matsuyama, Victor Hovland Compete at Bellerive

Scheffler's +300 price has pushed plenty of accomplished players into the +3000 range and beyond, creating several intriguing sleeper options in the 50-player field. Bellerive returns as a BMW Championship venue for the first time since 2008, so recent form and broader FedExCup Playoff history carry additional weight alongside direct tournament results.

The three preferred long shots all meet at least one important criterion. Hideki Matsuyama enters with one of the strongest recent runs in the field, Viktor Hovland has already won this event and Patrick Cantlay is a two-time BMW champion who is beginning to trend upward again.

3 Best BMW Championship Sleepers

Hideki Matsuyama (+3000) Check out the best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook

Matsuyama is the form play of the group. He finished T7 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, giving him four consecutive top-seven finishes after a T7 at the Wyndham Championship, T5 at the Rocket Classic and T3 at the 3M Open. That type of consistency makes +3000 stand out in a limited field where he does not have to deal with a cut.

His recent BMW Championship history is less spectacular, including a T26 last season, so this selection is much more about where his game is right now. Matsuyama has repeatedly put himself within striking distance over the past month without converting any of those chances into a victory, and another top-seven finish last week suggests the ceiling remains high enough to finally turn that run into a win.

Viktor Hovland (+3000) Check out the best odds at Caesars Sportsbook

Hovland offers the strongest combination of current upside and BMW Championship history. He won the event in 2023 and returned with a T7 finish in 2025, showing that he has repeatedly elevated his game during this stage of the FedExCup Playoffs.

The 2026 season has also already produced another major result, with Hovland winning the Travelers Championship in June. He finished T19 at the FedEx St. Jude last week, so the immediate form is not quite as strong as Matsuyama's, but he has eight top-10 finishes this season and has already proven he can beat elite fields when his ball striking peaks. At +3000, a past BMW champion with a win this summer offers considerably more upside than the price suggests.

Patrick Cantlay (+3250) Check out the best odds at FanDuel Sportsbook

Few players have a better BMW Championship résumé than Cantlay. He won the tournament in consecutive years in 2021 and 2022, becoming the first player to successfully defend the title since the event adopted the BMW Championship name. His last PGA TOUR victory also came in that 2022 BMW, making this tournament particularly significant as he continues searching for his next win.

There are signs that Cantlay is moving in the right direction. He finished T12 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week after a T8 at the Rocket Classic earlier this month, giving him two encouraging results entering Bellerive. He has not won in nearly four years, but +3250 is a substantial number for a player with eight career TOUR victories and arguably the strongest BMW-specific résumé among anyone priced outside the favorites.

BMW Championship Sleeper Betting Outlook

Matsuyama carries the strongest immediate form after four consecutive top-seven finishes, making him the safest of the three long-shot options. Hovland brings the best blend of recent winning form and BMW Championship success, while Cantlay's consecutive victories in 2021 and 2022 make +3250 difficult to ignore despite the lengthy win drought.

Scheffler deserves to be the overwhelming favorite after what he did in Memphis, but +300 leaves almost no room for error. Matsuyama, Hovland and Cantlay all offer accomplished alternatives at 10 times the price or longer, with each possessing either the current form or BMW Championship history needed to realistically contend in St. Louis.
