BMW Championship First Round Leader Odds: Back Kitayama, Woodland in Thursday's Opener at Bellerive

The BMW Championship begins Thursday at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, bringing together the PGA TOUR's top remaining FedExCup contenders for the second playoff event. Which players are positioned to attack Bellerive immediately and make a run at the first-round lead? Check out these BMW Championship first-round leader picks and best bets.

2026 BMW Championship Odds: Scottie Scheffler Massive Favorite as Defending Champion & Last Week's Winner

Bellerive has not hosted a PGA TOUR event since the 2018 PGA Championship, but that leaderboard provides a useful indication of what could work this week. Brooks Koepka won that event, while Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Jon Rahm, Gary Woodland, Justin Thomas and Thomas Pieters all finished inside the top 10, creating a clear profile built around distance and elite ball striking.

The first-round leader market also puts additional emphasis on players capable of producing unusually low individual rounds rather than sustaining elite play for four days. Gary Woodland, Kurt Kitayama and Michael Thorbjornsen all arrive with recent evidence of fast starts, while their power and approach numbers should translate well to Bellerive.

BMW Championship Odds Breakdown

Gary Woodland (+5000) Check out the best odds at bet365 Sportsbook

Woodland produced another quick start at the FedEx St. Jude Championship last week, opening with a 4-under 66 to sit only one shot off the lead. That continued one of the clearest trends in his 2026 season, as Woodland has now been inside the top 10 after the opening round in eight of his last 14 tournaments.

There is also direct Bellerive history working in his favor. Woodland held the first-round lead the last time this course hosted a PGA TOUR event at the 2018 PGA Championship, eventually finishing T6. Eight years later, the course should still reward many of the same strengths that helped him contend that week.

Woodland remains one of the biggest hitters in the field, ranking fifth in driving distance. His iron play can fluctuate, but the ceiling remains considerable, with Woodland posting the 12th-highest percentage of rounds in this field gaining at least two strokes on approach over the past six months at 16.1%.

That inconsistency matters much less in a first-round leader market. Woodland only needs the entire package to click for 18 holes, and his recent opening-round results show that has happened frequently enough to make +5000 worth considering.

Kurt Kitayama (+4000) Check out the best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook

Kitayama brings one of the strongest statistical profiles for Bellerive. He combines distance with solid accuracy off the tee, ranks ninth in this field in Strokes Gained: Approach over the past six months and sits 16th in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee during the same period.

His long-iron numbers make the fit even more appealing. Kitayama ranks 11th in driving distance, eighth in proximity from 175-200 yards and fourth from beyond 200 yards, giving him the type of power and approach combination that should create plenty of scoring opportunities at Bellerive.

That ball striking was on full display in Memphis. Kitayama gained 3.11 strokes on approach during the opening round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the best mark in the field, and finished Thursday tied for the lead before eventually posting a T12 finish.

It was also his second notable opening round in his last four starts after sitting sixth following Round 1 of the Genesis Scottish Open. Kitayama is arriving with both strong overall form and repeated evidence that his best golf can show up immediately, making +4000 attractive in the first-round leader market.

Michael Thorbjornsen (+4000) Check out the best odds at BetMGM Sportsbook

Thorbjornsen joined Kitayama at the top of the leaderboard after the opening round in Memphis before illness derailed the remainder of his week and left him T42. The result disguises how impressive that opening round was, and a healthier Thorbjornsen now gets another course that should reward his aggressive style.

The 24-year-old ranks 11th in this field in driving distance and has two top-10 finishes across his last four starts. His biggest breakthrough came two starts ago at the Rocket Classic, where he fired a final-round 63, the lowest score of Sunday, to climb from T7 and secure his first PGA TOUR victory.

The recent low-round profile extends well beyond that win. Thorbjornsen had the lowest opening-round score at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, sat one shot off the first-round lead at the Genesis Invitational and later produced one of the lowest third rounds there. He also posted the second-lowest Round 2 score and lowest final-round score at the Rocket Classic, along with the second-lowest Round 2 score at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Over the past six months, Thorbjornsen owns the seventh-highest percentage of rounds in this field gaining at least four total strokes at 18.5%. He also ranks 13th in percentage of rounds gaining five or more strokes, exactly the type of volatility that can be extremely valuable when betting a single-round market.

With a Presidents Cup captain's pick still potentially within reach, there is additional incentive to produce another high-end performance. Thorbjornsen has repeatedly shown the ability to go extremely low for 18 holes, and Bellerive's emphasis on power makes +4000 another strong first-round leader option.

BMW Championship First-Round Leader Betting Outlook

Woodland offers the longest price at +5000 and combines a strong 2026 fast-start record with the unique advantage of having already led after Round 1 at Bellerive in 2018. Kitayama brings the strongest overall statistical fit, particularly with his recent approach play and long-iron performance.

Thorbjornsen may provide the highest single-round ceiling of the three. His recent results are filled with rounds near the top of individual-day leaderboards, and his distance should translate particularly well to Bellerive. In a market that only requires one exceptional round, all three have demonstrated the ability to start tournaments quickly enough to contend Thursday.
