Carolina Hurricanes vs. Detroit Red Wings Prediction

"This is the world we live in right now," said coach Brind'Amour. Covid is back affecting games as we have now had a few games canceled in the NHL and CBB recently.

The Hurricanes have Sebastion Aho (leading scorer), Andrei Svechnikov, Seth Jarvis, Ian Cole, Steven Lorentz, and Jordan Stall (covid). Unfortunately, the Carolina Hurricanes are losing a huge edge in their offensive play.  Sebastion Aho has had two or more points in his last five games played. Andrei Svechnikov, Seth Jarvis, and Jordan Staal have also dropped points between their stretches but serve mostly as playmakers and power forwards.

The Hurricanes will have to rely on the first line of Vincent Trocheck, Martin Necas, and Nino Niederreiter. All three are still great options as the Hurricanes are known for their fantastic roster depth.  However, for the sake of tonight's total, they don't provide enough offensive production that we have seen the Canes dish out. Sure these guys can score a goal here and there. But you shouldn't be expecting a barrage of goals.

The Red Wings aren't 100 percent healthy either as they already had a few guys out for injuries and now are missing Michael Rasmussen and Robby Fabbri due to covid.  Tonight the Red Wings have an angry, mad, hungry goalie in Alex Nedeljkovic in net for Detroit, and this Hurricanes offense should be very quiet tonight. Nedeljkovic is averaging a 91% save percentage and approved that to 97% in his last game against the Islanders. It seems he's been more comfortable in net and, as a result, has been playing up to the hype surrounding him originally.  Hours after Alex Nedeljkovic was traded to the Detroit Red Wings on July 22, the NHL schedule was released, and he was eager to see when he would be returning to Carolina and said he "circled the game on the calendar." This man has been looking forward to this game for a while now, and we don't expect many goals to get past him tonight. "Anytime you play a former team, a former teammate, there's some motivation," Nedeljkovic said, and facing a depleted team won't change the fact Carolina dumped him, and he will want to prove that was a huge mistake tonight.

You still have two teams playing, so let's look at the #1 defensive team in the NHL. They are #1 in goals giving up 2.1 and #1 in shots per game at 27.  They win games with their defense which is why this team is 67% under this year. Next, we look at Fredrick Anderson, who has a remarkable 93% save percentage for the season.  Freddy can carry this depleted Canes team to a win all by himself and amazingly has been even better, averaging a 95% and 96% save percentage his last two games. Overall, this game will be about the goaltenders as they battle it out in a low-scoring affair. I don't see this game being anything but a snoozefest with a depleted Canes offense and two great goaltenders.

Finally, Carolina has gone under 3-0-1 there last four and 4-1-1 with rest.  With everything we have mentioned, we won't be shocked to see a 1-0 game, but we expect the Wings to play well, the goalie to be outstanding, and the Wings to upset the Canes 3-1.  Under is the only way to go tonight in this snoozer. If you like defense, this is the game for you this evening.
