The Dallas Stars face the Colorado Avalanche tonight. Can Nathan MacKinnon and the Avalanche bounce back and catch the Stars in the Western Conference standings at the same time? Ben Rajavuori provides his Dallas Stars vs. Colorado Avalanche prediction.

Dallas Stars vs. Colorado Avalanche Prediction: Can Nathan MacKinnon, Avalanche Bounce Back?

The Dallas Stars hit the road to take on the Avalanche from Ball Arena tonight in Colorado. This is a massive game for playoff seeding, as the Stars are in first place in the central division with 105 points, while the Avalanche are just behind them with 102 in second place. With just three points separating the two teams, if the Avalanche were to take tonight’s game with two points, they would be just one point behind the Stars. With so much at stake tonight, this is a big game for the Avalanche. Can they get it done at home?

Dallas Stars vs. Colorado Avalanche Prediction

This is a tough scheduling spot for the Stars. They just played last night in Chicago, losing 3–2 to the Blackhawks. However, Scott Wedgewood was in net last night, who usually serves the backup, but my presumption is that the Stars went with him last night so that they could use starting goalie Jake Oettinger tonight in a bigger game. Prior to that loss against the Blackhawks, the Stars were one of the hottest teams in the NHL, winning eight games in a row. With that win streak snapped, the Avalanche will be looking to steal this one and make it back-to-back losses for the Stars.

The stars have been led by Jason Robertson this season, who leads the team with 77 points. Joe Pavelski is right behind him with 64 points and Roope Hintz is third on the team is 63. The stars are heavily led on offense by the centers and left wings, as the top six point scorers are one of the two. while the offense has been hot, Jake Oettinger has also been having an exceptional season in net. Oettinger is 31–13–4 this season with 2.8 goals allowed per game and a 90.3% save rate.

The Avalanche have been faltering a bit down the last stretch of the season, going 2-4 over their last six games. This is a massive spot for them in their schedule, as they still have a chance to catch Dallas and steal the number one seed, though. If they want to win this game, they will have to beat a good goalie in net in Oettinger. The good news is that they have two of the best offensive players in the NHL to do so. Nathan MacKinnon leads the team with 132 points and is fourth in the NHL with 48 goals this season. Mikko Rantanen is behind him with 102 points. This duo has been one of the best in the NHL and can score on just about anybody. Goalie Alexander Georgiev has also been having a great season, sporting a 37–16–4 record with 2.9 goals allowed per game and a 90% save rate. He will have to be on point tonight to stop the Stars.

While the Avalanche have been the colder team lately, they’re playing at home where they have been one of the best teams in the NHL. The Colorado Avalanche have the most wins in the NHL at home, sporting a 29–7-1 record in Colorado. While the Stars have been a good road team this season, they are on the second end of a back-to-back and now play at elevation in Denver. I think the Avalanche will play motivated tonight to try and steal the top seed from the stars and pick up the win at home.
