Devils vs. Red Wings Prediction, Betting Pick and Latest Odds

The New Jersey Devils will look to snap their two-game losing streak on the road against the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. The Wings are riding high after winning two games in a row, and they'll try to make it three on their home ice.

Detroit took down the Nashville Predators for the second time, and followed that up with a slight 1-0 win over the Islanders on Tuesday. They have seen success in certain scenarios this year with a 3-3-1 record, but have struggled against more talented teams. They were blown away by the Rangers twice, and were outplayed by the Penguins in the opener.

Meanwhile, the Devils are finding their first struggles after starting 5-1-1. They lost their last two games, it wasn't for a lack of offense. The Capitals edged them out 6-5 in OT, and then the Lightning outscored them 8-5 on Tuesday. Can they keep scoring while stepping up the defense? They will be put to the test on Thursday night as they try to turn the tide against the Red Wings.

New Jersey Devils vs. Detroit Red Wings Odds

The New Jersey Devils have flown to a -175 favorite on Thursday after opening at just -140. Bettors are heavily backing the Devils to break out of their slight slump, with 54% of the bets and 89% of the money on them to cover the -1.5 puckline.

New Jersey Devils vs. Detroit Red Wings Prediction

The Devils have seen more success on the road than anywhere else in the last few seasons. Since Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier finally turned the Devils into a contender in 2022, they have been one of the best road teams in hockey. They went 28-9 away from home that season, and followed that up with 21-18 last year. So far in 2024, they are 3-1 on the road, and will look for another victory this evening.

Their losses to the Capitals and Lightning didn't see a lot of defense, but you'd rather see the aggressive offensive style in a slight losing streak over a team that can't score. They put up five goals in each game, and are averaging over 3.5 per game so far in October. That will help them fare better against weaker teams, because they'll keep scoring, and won't give up as much to a Red Wings squad. Additionally, they will get defensive help tonight when Luke Hughes, younger brother of Jack, returns to the blue line after an offseason shoulder injury.

Due to the consistent offensive attack, we're going to ride with the alternate puckline of Devils -1 tonight. As previously noted, this moneyline has flown from -140 to -175, a sign of big money coming on the Devils to halt their losing streak. And when the Devils win, it's usually by multiple, thanks to this high-octane offense. All three of their road victories this year have been by several goals, but we'll buy the insurance for a push at one just in case. Meanwhile, when the Red Wings play good teams, they have floundered. The Rangers held them to just three goals in two games, outscoring them by six total. The Devils should follow a similar script tonight with the talent imbalance and motivation factor to get back in the win column.
